We just celebrated the Mid-Autumn festival last night! Yup, it’s several days early but that was the date it was decided on since Monday is a public holiday and everyone could make it. I was pleased to be invited by my better half’s parents to come over for dinner.
I bought some mooncakes to bring along as a gift. I spotted a teh tarik (pulled milk tea) version which I wanted them to try while my dear chose more conventional ones like white lotus and assorted nuts with chicken bits. The Imperial Musang King Royale (RM 78 / 2 pcs) has long been sold out.
It’s good to have a home cooked meal while celebrating the mooncake festival in a home setting. My family is partly in Sibu and partly in Singapore so I don’t get that myself.
There were also a lot of kids playing lanterns – I remember this vividly from my childhood and both of us lit some as well. Haha!
There’s a lot of weird and wonderful lanterns now – the little one got an Angry Birds version while the big one got a rather unwieldy and large dragon, which burned on one side after a while.
It was a good night spent with the future in-laws. Happy Mid-Autumn Festival 2013! 🙂

A lot of the kids nowadays don’t even bother to play with the lanterns. We’re from the early 80’s so the PC gaming scene didn’t really take off until I was 12 (with Wolf3D and later with Doom).

Haha! I didn’t think of putting their photos on my blog – didn’t put the other kids there too. There were a lot of other kids from the neighborhood.

Actually, over the last few years, I’ve realised that the accordion type lanterns are the ones that last the longest. The cellophane types are rubbish.

Indeed, I can remember the accordion paper types lasting a real long time! The ones we’re holding are actually from last year!
The cellophane ones are new, it’s sorta like a new trend, it doesn’t even look like paper lanterns since it doesn’t reflect as much candle light – but kids nowadays are attracted to the likeness of popular figures in them.

I heard about this Musang King Mooncakes being sold at ridiculous prices. I told my wife to make them for sale next year and RM20 per box.

I know, the Musang King ones are RM 78 / 2 pcs and yet it’s already sold out. There’s also Godiva mooncakes – they’re limited edition and the one I wanted sold out by the time I got back in 1 day.
I managed to get a box of that though – most expensive mooncakes I ever bought!
Never mind the price! It is investment to make them happy to have a generous son in law!!!

The Godiva chocolate mooncakes are for us though, my better half wanted to buy the in-laws the traditional ones.
