Guinness Stout Shake / Float Recipe (Stout with ice cream concoction)

guinness shake

The Guinness (or any other brand of stout) Shake (or Float) is a
delicious concoction made with stout (the dark beer) and ice cream.
It’s preferable to use vanilla ice-cream in this recipe as a flavored
ice cream adds an undesirable taste to the resulting drink, though
experimentation is encouraged.

There are various recipes for making a Guinness Stout Shake
and this one is a quick and dirty method of banging out a fast one
within minutes with ingredients that are readily available in your
kitchen (that is, if you keep beer in your fridge). πŸ˜‰

1. Stout (the dark beer)

panther stout shake

Guinness Stout is my preferred stout of choice but Panther Superior Strength Extra Super Stout is a hyperbolic, but acceptable substitute as well. It’s cheaper than Guinness and I love the brewery’s name – Bali Hai. Heh!

2. Ice cream (vanilla)

guinness shake ice cream

It’s always a good idea to use premium ice cream (with an
appropriately high fat content and a correlating rich texture) instead
of quasi ice cream, but sometimes, we just have to improvise. πŸ˜‰ This
is Wall’s Paddle Pop “ice cream”. I just used the vanilla portion of
the dual flavor ice cream in the container instead of the chocolate
side.

3. Mug (or a suitable receptacle)

guinness shake recipe

Purists would want to utilize the traditional glass used to serve a
perfect pint of Guinness Stout, but I think mugs are more practical for
this concoction. Since I don’t have either, I used a saucepan instead.
Improvise! πŸ˜‰

This receptacle is where you put in the ice cream.

guinness shake catalyst

The next step is to open up the can of stout and pour the liquid
slowly into the receptacle with the ice cream in it. The stout will
start to foam as soon as it comes into contact with the ice cream. It
takes about a minute or so for the ice cream to fully dissolve and an
optional step at this point is to agitate the mixture to expedite the
catalyst.

guinness shake drink

Once the Guinness Stout Shake / Float is ready, pour the mixture
into a suitable drinking receptacle or just drink it straight from the
saucepan. It has a dark roasted coffee stout flavor tempered by the
sweet vanilla ice cream which creates wonderfully complex taste
textures complemented with a great aftertaste.

Enjoy! πŸ™‚

Note: It is important to put in the ice cream
BEFORE the stout to control the catalyst of fizzing and foaming during
the mixing of the Guinness Stout float. It would be unwise to put ice
cream INTO a stout beverage, unless you want uncontrollable foaming to
occur.

Technically, this means that it’s a Guinness Stout shake and not a Guinness Stout float, but that’s arguing semantics. :p

Absolut Vanilla

absolut vanilla store

I saw this Absolut Vanilla (well, it says Absolut Vanilia, but
Vanilla is easier to write ;)) promotion when I was walking through the
mall just now. There’s a standard 750 ml of Absolut Vanilia and a
miniature 50 ml bottle of Absolut Vanilla for RM 107.99.

absolut vanilla text

I haven’t had this particular vanilla infused vodka from Absolut
before so I got a bottle of Absolut Vanilla. The bottle has writing
that says “Experience the purest natural vanilla blended with the
finest vodka distilled from grain grown in the rich fields of Southern
Sweden.”.

absolut vanilla

I drank the small 50 ml bottle and I was pleased by the scent of
vanilla that wafted out when the bottle was opened. The vodka is nicely
infused with vanilla flavoring too – there’s a very tangible taste of
vanilla in there.

Anyway, I’ll update again later…I’m very pissed off right now,
don’t ask me why. I have to head out now…arranged a last minute
business related appointment.

Just: The new way to enjoy wine

just wine display

The Just label is not well known for wine…at least I haven’t heard
of it, until I saw this display at the Jusco supermarket. The
attractive features of the Just wine display is the unconventional wine
bottle size, the wide range of varieties available and the affordable
price at RM 8.50 per bottle.

just wine display close

Just seems to be a new label and has an interesting tagline which goes Just: The new way to enjoy wine.
The small Just wine bottles are color coded based on the type of wine
it contains – there are various options of red and white wine.

just cinsault merlot

I couldn’t resist the interesting bottles and grabbed two different
ones, a Merlot and a Cinsault. The bottles have easy screw on “metal
corks” (otherwise known as covers) and thus can be appreciated without
having to purchase a corkscrew. Just wine is a produce of France.

just merlot

The Merlot is described as “a round and balanced Merlot with aromas
of ripe fruits” and weighs in at 12.5% alcohol. It tasted alright, but
I’m no wine connoisseur so I can’t be more descriptive than that,
unless I sprout some pretentious bullshit about the wine being “naughty
to the palate at the beginning, with an aftertaste that caresses the
tongue with warm notes of oak” or something to that effect. πŸ˜‰

just cinsault

The Cinsault has a label that describes it as “a consistently fresh
and aromatic Cinsault with delicate aromas of red fruits”. I’ve never
heard of the word Cinsault before, but it tasted like a rose wine. This
one comes in at a slightly more satisfying 13% alcohol. I had it at
room temperature, and it tasted alright nevertheless.

Carlo Rossi 187 ml mini bottle

carlo rossi mini shelves

I saw this interestingly sized bottle of Carlo Rossi red wine on the
shelves – it’s between a long necked beer bottle and a 750 ml wine
bottle with normal dimensions, so the diminutive size is quite
noticeable. I also got the unusually smaller bottle to the right, but
haven’t sampled it yet.

carlo rossi mini bottle 187

Carlo Rossi is a well known local brand due to its competitive
pricing structure (a pretentious way of saying that its cheap ass wine
;)). I’ve had this particular label quite a number of times, and while
it’s nothing to write home about, I can’t argue with the value. Carlo
Rossi red wine comes in the normal bottles and larger 3 liter ones as
well.

carlo rossi mini cali red

This small bottle costs RM 11.65 and contains 187 ml of red wine. It
was dusty when I got it off the shelves…I wonder if it’s meant for
sale or rather as a free gift. Nevertheless, it was collecting dust on
the shelves of the local supermarket, so I decided to relieve it of its
pain. πŸ˜‰

carlo rossi mini 14

Carlo Rossi red wine contains 14% alcohol. That’s on the higher
range when it comes to wine (not counting port or brandy), so it comes
out as a pretty good value for the price range.

I drank the small bottle of Carlo Rossi red last night, and found that it was the perfect size for after work quaffing.

That’s right…you don’t sip Carlo Rossi…you quaff it. πŸ˜‰

Lauder’s finest scotch whisky

lauders scotch

Lauder’s blended scotch whisky comes in red packaging. This is a
duty free 1 liter bottle of this fine ethanol product from Scotland. I
had kept this in my room and forgot all about it until when I was
packing to come back to Kuching. Imagine that! Ethanol products go forgotten
in the sixthseal.com household! I could hardly believe my own eyes when
I saw this premium scotch from God knows when sitting lonely in my
table, which coincidentally was covered with cloth.

lauders scotch scotland

I suspect my mother had put that supposed “dust filter” on, for
nefarious purposes. What a sight to behold when I flipped up the cloth
and found this gem, which I immediately packed and earmarked for
consumption in Kuching. πŸ˜‰

lauders scotch bottle

The bottle looks beautiful! It’s molded with concave areas on the
four sides of the bottle with the label at the bottom. Very unique.
Nice to see, nice to hold, once broken, considered sold!

lauders scotch label

Lauder’s scotch is a product of Scotland and contains 43% alcohol.
It’s a 1L bottle coz it was purchased by my dad from one of his trips –
only duty free liquor are sold in 1L bottles. I don’t know why my dad
buys liquor coz he doesn’t display them and he doesn’t drink. I take it
that he’s purchasing it for my drinking pleasure. Heh! Thanks dad! πŸ˜‰

lauders scotch unique

It tastes really great…premium scotch is always wonderful,
compared to the el cheapo alcohol I’m forced to drink right now due to
dire financial straits. This one has a nice aroma, with complex flavors
and a nice bite. Nice is the word to describe it. The bottle is so
beautifully designed that it’s almost too good to drink…

lauders scotch drink

I said almost. πŸ˜‰

Martini vermouth

martini rossi vermouth

This is Martini (no, not the cocktail), otherwise known as Martini
& Rossi vermouth. It’s a dry vermouth made in Italy. Vermouth is a
herb infused wine usually considered as a mixer but it can be drunk
neat at room temperature. It’s pretty good actually, tastes like white
wine that won’t give you gastric.

martini vermouth italy

It weighs in at 18% – very paltry, but it has been my companion for
the last few days. You can see that it’s at the end of its lifespan,
it’s a pretty good to drink before dinner. A lot of people won’t
consider vermouth, especially the dry ones, for drinking straight, but
try it, you might like the taste.

Open fucking bar

Open bar. Please do not utter this phrase when I’m representing my
company. I always go overboard. You know that first guy who slams all
the alcohol and gets pissed drunk first? Yup, that’s me…

I will update more soon…clearing the Beer Fog from my brain. I drunk around 14-15 beers in half an hour.

Sahip brandy

sahip

Sahip brandi (brandy) is another locally made “compounded brandy”.
It retails for RM 20.60 and can be recognized by the prominent Sikh
riding on a horse label. The brandy contains 40% alcohol. I’m not a big
fan of Sahip though…the “fusel oil smell” is particularly strong and
I associate that smell with cheap liquor. Anyway, if you don’t know
what fusel oil smells like, buy some lacquer from your local hardware
shop and have a good whiff. πŸ˜‰

sahip brandy

Well, beggars can’t be choosers, so let’s move on to the non-taste
related characteristics of this locally distilled brandy. It’s made in
Selangor by Vintage Jaya Sdn. Bhd. The effects are rather pleasant, and
this is nice and chuggable if you ignore the fusel oil. It will get you
the ethanol effects that you’re after…at a relatively cheap price.
However, if you balk at the smell of fusel oil in your drink, you’ll
probably want to avoid this. It’s pretty common with certain distilled
liquors and Sahip is one of them.

Kapak (axe) brandi (brandy)

kapak brandi

This is Kapak brandy – a locally made (Klang, Selangor) brandy that
retails for RM 16.10. That makes it a mid priced liquor, perfect for
the middle of the month. πŸ˜‰ The beginning of the month starts with
premium brands (JD, Absolut, Johnnie Walker etc) and the end of the
month is delegated to budget distilled spirits (Langkau, Longhouse
etc). I wouldn’t say I have a drinking problem, though that can be
attributed to denial, since I drink every day. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, distilled spirits are best consumed on an empty stomach –
that’s my daily routine…get home from work, take a variety of
benzodiazepines (the usual is 20 mg nitrazepam, 4 mg clonazepam and 2
mg alprazolam) and drink before getting something to eat. No, this is
not in the interests of harm minimization but if I’m worried
about stomach ulcers (er…already have them) or brain damage (meth did
that already), I would have stopped my crystal meth consumption…and I
never did. :p I don’t expect to live a long life, carpe diem and all
that cliche shit.

I couldn’t be bothered with taking pictures since I got home from
work at 7:30 PM (there was a client) so I just made a video post:

Hey, you’re watching sixthseal.com and this is Cap Kapak…a locally made whisky…er, a locally made brandy.
It says “Brandi sebatian” – a reconstituted brandy or a mixture of
brandy…its RM 16.10, pretty cheap, and it contains 37% alcohol.
Make me forget…coz I’ve had a shitty day…and…
It’s just like…it tastes pretty good actually.

I’m pretty tired from not having enough sleep (coffee, ya know ;))
and I just had an argument with my gf (so what else is new?) and I had
a pretty shitty day in general. That has all changed now though, I’m
feeling borderline normal…in fact, I’ll go so far as to say that I’m
feeling semi good. πŸ™‚ Yes, I can type while under the influence of
alcohol…people who act all fucked up and shit on alcohol irks me to
no end.

Alcohol and benzodiazepines…for the times when you can’t afford meth to feel like God or ketamine to escape into dreams.

Disclaimer: alcohol and benzodiapines may cause CNS depression
(leading to death) so caution is adviced for inexperienced users
attempting to leverage on the synergy from multiple CNS depressants.

Arak Putih Rumah Panjai – longhouse liquor

arak putih rumah panjang

Arak Putih Rumah Panjang (or Rumah Panjai as it states on the label)
is a very affordable brand of distilled liquor at RM 4.40 for 620 ml of
around 60% proof alcohol. It’s one of the locally brewed spirits – the
picture above shows the grand tradition of these fine local offerings.
As you can see, local distilleries is very big on recycling and
environmental issues (haha!). The photo taken above shows the various
bottles that it comes in – there’s a white one which I suspect is a
recycled vinegar bottle, and the brown one beside it is a recycled
Carlsberg bottle and the one behind that is a Tiger beer bottle with
the bottles emptied, cleaned (I hope) and filled with their own product
and slapped with their brand.

arak putih rumah panjai

This one is from Hornbill Distillery at 4th Mile, Kuching. I got the
white bottle to show that the distilled spirit is white. Excuse me for
not being articulate and forgive any language semantics inconsistencies
in this post because I have already consumed 1/4 of the liquor on an
empty stomach.

rumah panjai

It’s known as longhouse liqueur because of the picture of a longhouse on it.

longhouse liquor

It certainly is packs a punch…I’ve chugged a third of the bottle
now, and the taste is surprisingly palatable, with none of the kerosene
taste these locally brewed liquors have. It’s good. Nice! Well, and I
am afraid I am unable to continue writing now. I’m starting to get
quite inebriated…
