DIY – Home Improvement

hi kit

I have been taking pains to furnish our new condo recently and the DIY bug has bitten my girlfriend big time, no thanks to her colleague. Her colleague is doing direct sales part-time and I’m told she does every -way there is out there. Amway, Cosway, Tupperware etc.

She brought home this rickety and capricious clothes hanger last night and practically forced me to fix it at 11 pm at night after dinner. It took me about 30 minutes to get it done – I’m more Tim than Al in the home improvement department, but in the end I managed to assemble the contraption and anchor it to one of the ceiling beams in our master bedroom.

hi diy

It took a long time before we realized that the RM 30 device wouldn’t reach the actual ceiling of the condo, so I settled for the beam while my girlfriend muttered something about it looking out of place. Hmph…

I would have preferred to save the hassle and get ready fixed furniture delivered straight in.

Nevertheless, the truism of beggars can’t be choosers applies and it had already cost us a significant chunk of our savings to get the condo up to reasonable living standards – air conditioning, fridge, washing machine, wardrobes, broadband, breakfast bar, and a king sized bed with Aussino fittings and pillows (as well as other creature comforts).

I felt a semblance of satisfaction in assembling the rickety clothes hanger – it was meant for my work shirts and my coats and ties and I’m grateful to my girlfriend for purchasing it.

It’s not a Kodak Moment, but definitely an arrghh arrggghh arrrggghh moment. πŸ˜‰

More power!

  1. When I lived in one apt, I share with my boyfriend and I insist on sharing rent too. Not into making guy pay for all things right to grocery. Guess that how I am since I work and so does he. I broke off with him now enjoy my own pad.

  3. Dude, Pretty good job installing the pole. Let me know when you are ready to install a shinny dancing pole, I can get them from Spearmint Rhino. πŸ™‚

  4. When your rental lease is up and want a new environment, I have a fully furnished condo including streamyx and Astro thrown in. It is currently rented out to an expat on yearly basis.

  5. HB; your apartment looks ok to me. But about the Amway, Mary Kay, SBC or other direct marketing plans; be afraid, be very, very afraid!!!. Been there, done that. Just kidding, though I tell you this as a friend and former Electrolux (door to door) salesman when going to college. Direct Marketing is bad, unless you are the person on top of the food chain.
Happy Thanksgiving to You and your Loved Ones. I sure have a lot to be thankful for, and I wish and pray for you a happy thanksgiving also.

p.s Has the movie “Twilight” shown there yet, and is it as is popular over there as in in the US? It is all my nieces (kids) and even ladies my age (35-48) speak of, and they want the books for Christmas gifts. I have not seen it yet, nor read the books.

  6. I guess you try to handy man too. I try also with Home Depot Store here. Got power screwdriver, drill and power nail gun. Learn in high school woodshop class how to build things.
Did’nt know you try to Amway or other. Well in states they not good business due to company use people to hook other to join like club get money due from them. Company make money people lose it. Better to start own online business yourself and gain more from it.

Since you’re in KL, I’d get my ass to a meet if I were you.

Me, I’m always glad to see a new face around.
Keep coming back, bro. It won’t work unless you work it.

  8. Tulip: Yeah, that is usually the trend nowadays, especially for stuff like rent. It’s too much for one person, and with the current global recession, two working parents is a must.
Pixeldoll: It’s a pretty nice place and very close to where we both work so it works (haha) for me. I signed a 1 year + 1 year (option) contract.
danny: It’s RM 1,100 which is a really great price for the place. It’s usually around RM 1,500 – RM 1,700 but ours was unfurnished. Parking bays can be rented out at RM 200 over here.
xin: Yeah, I’m usually the slob, I can get by with a single mattress and a table for my notebook (which was exactly what I did in Kuching). πŸ˜‰
e: Haha! Thanks mate, but I don’t think the Management Office will approve of drilling stuff into the ceiling. πŸ˜‰
anak pak lah: Thanks buddy! Where’s the place located? I need to be staying in Kelana Jaya.
eiling: Yeah, that’s what I though too. It wouldn’t hold that many things with a max load of 8 kg. The suit and shirts alone is taxing the arms. I must admit it looks nifty though, going up to the beams like that. πŸ™‚
ShadowFox: It should be alright, the condo is relatively new and I haven’t seen any insects around besides mosquitoes.
tom: Yeah, I know! I have grown EXTREMALLY weary about MLM and direct marketing. I attended a really hard sell Herbalife session once and totally regretted it. 3 hours of my life wasted on that.
Thanks for the wishes, Happy Thanksgiving to you too, my friend.
Implosion: Haha! To be honest, I am concerned about the structural integrity of the thing as well. It’s fastened by a spring and pushed in at an angle to get it straight and steadfast.
Michale (Mike): I’m not into Amway, Cosway or any of the -ways at all. πŸ™‚
Not a big fan of MLM and direct marketing companies, due to bad experiences.
Anonymous Kaki: I love that! One day at a time, life on life’s terms. Classic, my friend.
I will get to all the meets when I get settled in. Have been meeting up with a few friends lately.
eric: Thanks buddy! It is much more comfortable to be living in your own place, especially after the horrible previous apartment that had five (!!!) people sharing a single bathroom and toilet. Imagine the rush when waking up and going to work.
cynthia: It still could, but it’ll come crashing down if I tried. πŸ™‚
Diana: You be seeing the right person and the right car. I do live at the Aman Suria area. πŸ™‚
    What a coincidence eh?
Melbourne…ah, I miss the place. Take care!
