Signature 8 flavor Dynasty Xiao Long Bao with foie gras and black truffle!

flavored xiao long pao

Okay, this is one of the most interesting and unique things I’ve heard in a long time. There’s an 8 flavor xiao long bao course at Paradise Dynasty which includes premium fillings like black truffle and foie gras.

I couldn’t wait to try it when I first heard about the concept. I headed down to ION Orchard in Singapore yesterday with Lainey to meet up with Michelle and Ben just for this.

8 flavor xiao long pao

Paradise Dynasty claims to have the world’s first 8 flavored xiao long bao and you have to eat it in order. The restaurant is famous for it – the open kitchen is filled with cooks preparing it and a lot of patrons order this specialty.

The 8 different fillings are:
1. Original
2. Garlic
3. Ginseng
4. Foie Gras
5. Black Truffle
6. Cheesy
7. Crab Roe
8. Szechuan

…and you have to eat it in order to have the optimal experience. πŸ˜€

The set costs SGD 13.90 and it’s well worth the price. I found the Garlic and Ginseng xiao long pao very flavorful, with the juices bursting from the skin as you bite into it. The Foie Gras and Black Truffle ones are suitably decadent and I loved the Crab Roe filling too.

However, I felt that the Cheesy xiao long pao should have been #7 as the overpowering taste of cheese can be a bit…well, overwhelming. The Szechuan deserves its final spot as the filling is extremely spicy (even for my desensitized taste buds).

It certainly is an epicurean adventure that you MUST try if you’re ever in Singapore. Thanks for brunch Ben and Michelle! πŸ™‚

    • Yeah! It’s very unique eh?

I was so keen to check this out when I was in Singapore.

It was the first thing we did upon arriving. Woke up super early and got to Singapore at 9 am for it somemore.

It was worth it – very delicious stuff. πŸ˜€

Well, it has pork + the flavor in question e.g. in the black truffle xiao long bao, it contains pork AND black truffle. Same goes for all the other flavors.

I like how you have to eat it in order too – from the mildest to the strongest flavored one to truly enjoy it. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, it’s awesome stuff Hazel! πŸ˜€

I heard about this from my friend and wanted to try it right away. Heh.

It’s really good xiao long bao too – not just for show with the fancy ingredients.

You just have to eat it really fast coz it’s not so nice when it gets cold. πŸ™‚

  1. HB, when I head back to Singapore to visted my cousins will try this place. Wonder if customers could order one type of xiao bao if like it very much? Do they do takeout also?

    • Hello Vickie! πŸ™‚

Yup, you can actually order the different flavors seperately. I remember seeing that in the menu – it’s available in 6 pieces and a dozen xiao long paos.

I’m not sure if they do takeout though…

However, I strongly recommend you try the 8 course xiao long pao in order, it’s supposed to be eaten that way. πŸ˜€

I think we were talking about frog leg porridge or this multi flavored and colored xiao long bao the day before I went to Singapore and I was most intrigued by this one.

There are a lot of branches around Singapore but I’m not sure if all of them serves up this 8 course xiao long bao thing.

We went to the one in ION Orchard. πŸ˜€

    • I love xiao long bao – it’s the moment when you bite into it and all the hot juices from the steaming of the pork comes running out onto your soup spoon. πŸ˜€

Yeah, I imagine some of the other flavors would appeal to you if you don’t like the gingery soup.

The other ones are made with pork + the ingredient e.g. pork + cheese. πŸ™‚

I’m inclined to go again and eat it really fast so it doesn’t get cold. Haha!

I love the authentic old skool tea pouring with the ultra long sprout too. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, pretty cool eh bro? πŸ˜€

The eating-in-order bit is to prevent your palate from being overwhelmed by stronger tastes so the xiao long bao flavors go from original -> mild -> strong.

Thus, you’ll be able to taste the nuances in every single one as you eat the xiao long bao in order.

I thought it was nice too. Heh! πŸ™‚

Supposedly the first flavored xiao long bao in the world which you have to eat in order. πŸ™‚

  3. yeah would have probably skipped the cheese too. that’s just too fusion for my liking:P Like the fact that they point out, you need to eat in the order they lay out, to have optimal experience.. that’s just so.. i dunno.. haute.

    • Heh! I really liked the black truffle and foie gras though, you can taste it in the xiao long bao which I didn’t expect to. πŸ™‚

Exactly! That was the word I was looking for – haute. Haha! Well, I guess they insist on eating it in order to prevent the taste of the milder ones from being overwhelmed.

I liked it though and it’s pretty reasonable for xiao long bao in Singapore. πŸ˜€

  4. Foie Gras and Crab Roe?? Sounds yummy-licious……. can patrons customize certain flavors only or does it all have to come in a set of 8? =)

    • Hello Lyn! πŸ™‚

Yeah, it is delicious! I loved the fusion xiao long bao.

Well, it only has 8 flavors (including Original) and the 8 xiao long bao course is kinda like the “optimal experience” which they have – a tasting menu and meal rolled in one.

However, you CAN order the other flavors separately. It comes in 6 pieces and a dozen if I recall correctly.

…so you can have 12 crab roe xiao long baos. πŸ™‚
