Mee rebus tulang gearbox

mee rebus tulang gearbox

I just had the best mee rebus tulang gearbox at Restoran ZZ Sup Tulang in JB. This is one of those local foodie treasures that you need a local to bring you to.

The place is a rather chaotic assembly of huts and trees. The huts with the thatched roofs is meant to keep the sun and rain off your head and I found that dining in nature whets the appetite like nothing else.

What is mee rebus tulang gearbox? Well, it’s basically Malay style noodles with an interesting component – the tulang gearbox part. Tulang gearbox is basically the large bones from a cow, usually from the shank. There is still quite a lot of meat, cartilage and tendon on the bones but when you request for it β€œgearbox style” it comes with a straw.

The straw is for you to suck the marrow out of the huge bones.

The portion of the noodles in mee rebus tulang gearbox is a bit small for me but the gravy is sinfully rich and delicious. It leaves you hankering for more. It’s about RM 8.50 and comes with 4 good sized bones.

You’ll find at least one HUGE bone in there and you’re supposed to insert the straw deep inside it and suck in all the marrow and juices. It’s a visceral experience like no other. The bone marrow is sweet, warm and hearty. It’s simply the best mee rebus tulang gearbox I’ve had!

  1. They say the marrow is good for your joints…or for old people like me, at least. LOL!!! Certainly looks good…but will have to eat using hands. I would love those tendons stuck to the bone… Yum!

    • I just love the taste of bone marrow. πŸ™‚

Yeah, this is perfect for anyone who likes beef tendon – there’s a lot of it sticking to the bone.

The bones are so plentiful that it overwhelms the noodles, can’t even see the noodles at first.

You have to get your hands dirty for this dish, no doubt, but it’s worth it. πŸ˜€

It’s super delicious! I would have ate two plates but there was otak otak and goreng pisang with dipping sauce too. JB people eat their pisang goreng with sauce. πŸ™‚

    • Heh! That’s a good question.

I think it’s called “tulang gearbox” e.g. “gearbox bone” coz it looks like a stick shift?

I reckon the bones came from the shank, or at least some of it. At least that’s what I always thought gearbox means – called thus coz it looks like the manual gear of a car. πŸ™‚

    • Yup, it’s awesome stuff bro!

I like the shortened straw they stick right in the middle. Perfect for slurping up the bone marrow. πŸ™‚

The portion of mee rebus is really small though, but the tulang gearbox makes up for it – they’re a lot of huge bones where the straw will fit in nicely so you can enjoy all the good stuff. πŸ˜€

    • Me too!

      It’s sooooo good eh?

Plus, this place’s specialty is bone marrow so it’s always hot and steaming.

There’s nothing like slurping down warm, rich bone marrow. πŸ™‚

    • Indeed bro! It’s really awesome stuff.

There isn’t a lot of noodles either, so you can concentrate on eating the meat and tendons and cartilage off the bone and sucking out the bone marrow afterwards. πŸ™‚

    • Yup! It’s JB, the cost of living isn’t as much as KL, at least with regards to food.

I find the prices of food over there to be slightly cheaper than what you’ll get in KL. πŸ™‚

Yeah, you should try this out when you’re in Johor, it’s REALLY good stuff bro.

They’re really generous with the tulang gearbox bit and the marrow is so good I’m still thinking about it. Heh!

  3. wah kampung style bone marrow. That’s interesting cos the only bone marrows I ever had was at the fine dining restaurants that gives you a nice little spoon to scoop them out.

    • Hello Eiling!

Yup, it’s good authentic Malay food. I love it.

Oh I know the kind you’re talking about. Ish, the spoons are too haute – can’t really enjoy the bone marrow that way.

You gotta try it with a straw and get your hands dirty! πŸ™‚
