Currywurst in Berlin

currywurst germany

You’ve gotta try this when you’re in Berlin! The word β€œcurry” in currywurst might make it sound like it’s not an authentic German dish but it’s 100% from Berlin. It was invented in 1949 according to Wikipedia by a lady called Herta Heuwer.

The Volkwagen Autostadt in Wolfsburg produces it’s own currywurst but but we unfortunately did not manage to try it coz it was raining heavily and we had a train to catch.

Thus, we had the one in Berlin – it’s a takeaway food and currywurst is made of pork sausages drowned in ketchup and a healthy sprinkling of curry powder before being cut into slices. The proprietor told me that the steamed currywurst originates from the former East Berlin while the currywurst that’s steamed, dipped in batter and fried are from the former West Berlin.

I tried both and I preferred the ones without the skin. It’s delicious, I was really full from lunch but ate both types anyway and despite being a tad salty (which is really something coming from me), it was absolutely fabulous!

It’s one of those local snacks that you just have to try. It’s sweet, tangy and salty – the Germans make good sausages. The currywurst stand in Berlin that we went to serves organic pork sausages for 3.30 Euros. πŸ™‚

Yup, cheap and filling, currywurst is all around Berlin in food stands. Gotta love it. πŸ˜€

    • Yeah, but the demand for that would be even more severely limited. Heh.

I mean serving pork is alienates a huge market segment, organic pork, even more (due to the misconception that everything organic wouldn’t be nice, heard this from a couple of people and it isn’t true).

I’ll love to see it happen though. πŸ˜€

    • Well, currywurst is not spicy per se.

The curry powder is very, very salty and not spicy at all (at least to my tastebuds).

It balances well with the ketchup though. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, it’s quite a different experience and texture! πŸ™‚

I love it, I don’t think it’ll work by itself (curry powder only) but with ketchup, the flavors all blend in to make currywurst an awesome snack! πŸ˜€

    • Haha! Yeah, those are great sausages indeed.

I particularly like the huge ones stuffed with pork, those are the best.

      Gotta love them bratwursts! πŸ™‚

  2. Hey HB, its not “real” Ketchup – its a tomato-based sauce with different spices. Every (proper) currywurst-place makes his own sauce, thats what makes the curryurst so special – its all about da sauce! πŸ™‚ So cool you visit our country – hope you had a great time!! Greetings.

I didn’t know every currywurst place has their own patented sauce mixture.

Yeah, it didn’t taste like ketchup to me too, a tomato sauce mixture with the texture of ketchup would more accurately describe it.

I had a wonderful time in Germany. Danke! πŸ˜€
