6 things we did during our Raya staycation

1. Had dinner at one of the best restaurants in KL

Sage KL

My better half surprised me with this treat. It’s actually the second most expensive meal we’ve ever had in KL (the first being the Michelin star Le Gavroche chef who came to town) but I thought it was worth it. Delicious appetizers and mains – thanks for booking us dinner at Sage dear.

2. Watched Ant-Man

Ant-Man

I’ve been wanting to watch Ant-Man for a long time. We even had passes to the premiere screening but missed it coz I thought it was the next day. Thus, I got ourselves Premier Class tickets (RM 63) at The Gardens to go watch the movie. I had actually wanted Gold Class but my dear thought it was too expensive. It used to cost RM 40 per pax but that’s the price of Premier Class now – Gold Class is double.

GSC Premier Class

It’s still quite an exclusive viewing experience though – the seats are all couple seats, which you can remove the middle partition so you can snuggle up together. That’s actually a *necessity* since the air-conditioning was so cold everyone in the Premier Class cinema was shivering. It’s still better than watching it in their regular cinemas though, this is a more intimate environment where no one talks loudly or uses their mobile phones – the higher ticket prices weeds out most badly behaved cinema goers. Ant-Man was awesome, a nice conclusion to Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

3. Ate escargots and drank Valrhona hot chocolate

Yeast Mid-Valley

We had lunch at a Parisian style bistro/bakery which also serves wine. I had Escargots a la Bourguignonne while my dear had a ham and cheese croissant (Croissant au Jambon et au Fromage). This was our lunch the day we checked in, she also had a Valrhona hot chocolate – we bought a lot of the famous French chocolate a while back, it’s not for kids, their single origin stuff is utterly bitter, in a good way.

4. Walked around the mall

Lifejuice Gardens

We loaded up with fresh cold pressed juice before spending most of the day walking around the mall. My dear wanted to get a clutch bag and we went to most of the stores in The Gardens and Mid-Valley but couldn’t find one that she wanted. I was secretly observing at what kind of bags she was looking at so I could KIV for our anniversary. smirk

Lifejuice

The Sun Kissed Stress Reliever (RM 13) is a mixture of ginger, red apple, pineapple, orange, carrot and grapefruit in a glass bottle. I liked the Nutty Professor Energy Booster (hazelnut, almond, cashew, soy milk, raw cacao, Medjool dates) and 50 Shades of Grey Stamina Booster (Earl Grey team hazelnut, Himalayan salt, coconut, agave necter) too.

5. Chilled in our hotel room

St Giles Gardens

I booked a room as St Giles The Gardens, the best hotel among the 3 at Mid-Valley. I also considered Pullman Bangsar (which has a shuttle service to Mid-Valley) but ultimately wanted to stay at Mid-Valley itself since we were out almost the entire day!

6. Had a hearty breakfast

Antipodean

This was at Antipodean, which my better half wanted to try. It was decent and cheap (relatively) fare but not as good as their original Bangsar Telawi II outlet, probably due to the huge crowd here. We had to wait five (5) minutes in queue while we got seated and that’s considered a very quick seating. The service was good though and I quite liked my order of Eggs Marlborough with Salmon.

I think we spent only 10 hours or so total in our room but it was fun and we got to spend the time with each other during our staycation. πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, it was pretty good! πŸ™‚

I ate half of it, but the escargots was better though. I liked the coffee (French, double shot as default) too. However, the best meal was at Sage, one of the finest dining places in KL.

  1. Oooo, I like this post, coz I want to know what you guys did on that staycation “me-time” (or “us-time” ?? day).. I like two things – Ant Man & Escargots.. I know I won’t be able to watch Ant Man (coz of the kids and all), so I have no choice but to wait for it in Astro (maybe 1 year from now?), hehe.. And escargots, give me 10 plates, I can finish.. Love the garlicky buttery creamy sauce, I can lick the plate clean too! (Psstt, I really licked before)..

    • Ant-Man was quite good, fitting end to Phase II of MCU. πŸ™‚

I was looking forward to watching the 3D version (which costs RM 84+ per pax so RM 170+ for two) but my dear doesn’t like 3D movies coz it makes her dizzy so we stopped watching them. I hear Ant-Man is good in 3D though – the shrinking effects especially.

Yup, the escargots was quite good, didn’t have shells but most places buy it in a can anyway, the shells are just for decoration. This is true in most restaurants, even European ones, unless you’re in France. I love the taste of escargots too, I found out that we can even eat the common garden snail (the large ones) if you mulch it first (feed it with grass for 2-4 weeks to get the toxins out).

    • Yeah, the food at Sage was awesome! πŸ™‚

It’s not cheap though, one glass of wine was RM 65++ and the appetizers are RM 80, mains are RM 120 with desserts RM 35. There are degustation packages too, we had a 5-course meal (with amuse bouche and chef’s appetizer) and it was delicious.

  2. Ah well, I watched ant-man during raya holiday as well. BTW, any good restaurants worth checking out in mid valley or the gardens? THANKS IN ADVANCE! πŸ™‚

    • Yeah, I would recommend Sage KL. πŸ™‚

We had dinner there, it’s delicious. It’s not very wallet-friendly but the food is awesome. Dinner starts from RM 210++ per pax (not inclusive of supplements or drinks) for a 3-course meal, more for degustation packages or seasonal menus.

    • Yup, I’m writing it now! πŸ™‚

I’ll post up the Sage review tomorrow. It was a delicious meal, a bit on the expensive side, but the food was good (except the desserts, which we found mediocre). The other downside is they don’t serve wine by the glass except for the sommelier’s choice (and it’s RM 65++ per glass) but otherwise service is great and food is awesome.

  3. that looks like a pleasant way to spend raya … hopefully the mall wasn’t too crowded! i was at klcc on friday evening, and the lower floor were packed, with traffic up and down the escalators πŸ˜€ gosh, just read your comment above, and didn’t realise that reasonably priced wine by the glass isn’t available at sage any more … yikes!

    • Yeah, it was quite a relaxing affair. πŸ™‚

The mall was PACKED though – didn’t even have space to move and like you, we had to queue at the escalators. Sage only serves two (2) kinds of reds and whites by the glass, priced at RM 62 and RM 65 for either. The only other option is to go bottles or half bottle (which I thought was a nice option but I’ll prefer paired glasses to drinking half a bottle by myself).

  4. Haven’t watch Ant-Man yet but heard good reviews about that. Anyway, seems like it’s for the best that you missed the Premier coz now you get a better deal. Couple seat and cozy environment. And some privacy too

    • Yeah, it’s a good Marvel movie! πŸ™‚

I paid for our tickets though, it was RM 63 for Premier Class while if I went to the premier screening it’ll have been free. Haha. But the upside is Premier Class is a little like Gold Class, it’s a higher end cinema experience where all the seats are couple seats with a middle armrest that can be taken up (like planes) and the seats and leg space are huge compared to a normal cinema so it’s like Business Class for cinemas, while Gold Class would be first class (if I remember correctly, there’s only 9-12 couple chairs inside).
