The Beautiful People

jerine beach

I’m an Aries and have strong attributes related to that horoscope. It describes me down to a T. We like beautiful things. Now, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that and there are many beautiful things in the world.

jerine bubble bath

Yes, this is what comes into mind for most guys but there are beauty in other things too.

Heck, there is even beauty to be found in random notes on a toilet door in a 10 room shared home. 😉

However, the thing I admire the most is the design skillz that people have. I just don’t have the necessary creativity with art as I do with the written word. I’m constantly amazed by the stuff that people can come up with.

old style

This is the Best Entry in the Dell Design Studio contest. Titled “Old Style” by Amirul Hasrie it features an abstract pattern which reminds me of the concrete jungle juxtaposed with hues of green in an attempt to re-conciliate nature with the big city. He walks away with vouchers and a Dell Design Studio laptop with his design on it. How cool is that?

dell

The other winner is the design by Sin Ong Toh called simply “Dell“. It has a very Zen feel to it with the budding lotus flowers. He won the Most Popular Design by Votes and I can certainly see why. It’s a photograph with post production elements that garnered him 333 votes.

Dell has a new range of laptops to cater to every person and the current one features a partnership with OPI, producing a series that matches your notebook to your nail color. I’m particularly intrigued by the “I’m Not Really a Waitress” design:

studio-1555-Waitress

This design called 100 Years in NY by Deanne Cheuk is awesome too!

studio-1555-100NewYork

The Dell Studio 15 laptop is not just a pretty face but has plenty of horse power under the facade, with up to Intel Core i7 Quad-Core processors with a nifty 15.6″ 16:9 aspect ratio LED screen and other features like Blu-ray, mobile broadband and surround sound complete with sub woofer built in.

dell-studio

I’m quite tempted by the laptops coz it has both beauty and brains and comes at a reasonable price tag to boot! It’s very convenient to buy Dell coz they have been offering online purchases since Time Immemorial (TM).

I remember buying a Dell tower PC back when I was 14. This was in the heydays of e-commerce and understandably, my dad had reservations about using a credit card to make purchases online. How the times have changed, you’ll think of purchases online first before buying from a brick and mortar shop nowadays.

My name is Legion

tranquil

I was at Belum Rainforest Resort a couple of weeks ago and the tranquility of the place is a nice change of pace from my usual chaotic lifestyle. Just like yin needs a yang, recharging at a place with lots of foliage and Zen-inducing soft, running water is revitalizing.

chaos-in-its-purest-form

Ultimately though, I thrive on bedlam, anarchy, and pandemonium. It’s like that verse “My name is Legion, for we are many (demons)“. I like art which has an element of madness in it – this is why my tattoos are heavily inspired by inner turmoil.

steph_celtic_cross_tattoo

Just a like tattoo, which is in effect customizing your own body, there is a new trend in personalizing your personal effects. You’ve seen self-customized phones and dSLRs by people adding some bling to it, usually via beads and such. However, you can now truly customize your own notebook and MAKE IT YOURS.

flames

One thing about notebooks – you want to feel proud toting it around town. You probably use it while out and about e.g. surfing at your local Starbucks. You don’t want to be discreetly opening your notebook and face the wall coz you feel embarrassed about the dull and drab colors right?

dell-design

Dell just came up with their Studio product range which includes allows you to choose from a wide range of artwork and colors for your notebook. I like the Mike Ming’s Sea Sky design on the Studio 15 coz of the art reminds me of late van Gogh paintings. I’ll want the model with the new Intel Core i7 coz it has a fast processor, a healthy graphics card (512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4570) and a large 500GB hard disk drive.

make-it-yours

They’re also running a contest to celebrate your individuality by self-expression. You create your own design and submit it online! I decided to do one based on my phoenix tattoo with a psychedelic twist to it.

phoenix design

I started by taking a photo of my tattoo and tracing it out before adding in the other elements.

This is the design I submitted!

Dell Make It Yours Design

The closing date of the contest is on the 5th of February. The prize is a Studio 15 laptop featuring your very own design and a RM 5,000 cash voucher.

Nifty, eh?  It’ll be magnificent to have a notebook that’s one-of-a-kind coz it’s your own design. You can join the contest here.

My Top 5 Treat List

jestina goon

I was talking to Jester on MSN about my bucket list Top 5 Treat List the other day. It’s basically a list of things you’ll like to reward yourself with. Throw creative stumbling blocks like your bank account balance, credit card debt and other emotional baggage out of the window and just make a list of stuff you’ll like to have.

My Top 5 Treat List:

#1 Dinner at Sugar Mill Restaurant, British Virgin Islands

Sugar Mill Restaurant is voted as one of the World’s Most Romantic Restaurants on Concierge.com and is described tantalizingly as “Love among the ruins”.

Sugar Mill Restaurant

Located in the Caribbean, this would require a flight to the US before another hop on a plane to the British Virgin Islands. Sugar Mill Restaurant is located in Tortola and offers truffles and other premium items on the menu.

It’s carved from a 17th century sugar mill and the interior looks very inviting with its rough stone walls and romantic lighting.

Who will I be sharing this fine dining experience with?

Jester of course!

HOW CAN YOU NOT WANT TO BRING THIS GIRL OUT FOR DINNER???

jestina goon sze mun

Just look at that smile, how can you not help but like her? =D

#2 Go to Sweden and stay at ICEHOTEL for a weekend

ICEHOTEL Sweden

I first read about the ICEHOTEL in an issue of National Geographic while taking a dump and it totally captivated my imagination. I think I had constipation for a couple of days after that from all the excitement. That was a couple of years back and I still get animated every time the subject is brought up.

Imagine a hotel build from scratch every year, with drinks served in glasses made of ice and going to bed in an entire room made out of ice blocks and sleeping on a block of ice with a rug to avoid hypothermia.

icehotel

They even have a section on “How to sleep well in -5 degrees Celsius”! I must experience this.

#3 Buy a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4

Lamborghini_Gallardo_LP560-4_Spyder

I don’t want a Ferrari – it’s just so common its borderline cliché. It’s Lamborghinis for me, thank you. Not just any Lambo either, I want the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4. Just look at the curves on the car and think about the 5.3L V10 under the hood. It reportedly beat the Ferrari F430 Scuderia, the Nissan GT-R and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 in an episode of Top Gear.

Lamborghini_Gallardo_LP560

This car is infused with essence of awesomeness.

#4 HALO (High Altitude-Low Opening) jump in the United States

I’m an adrenaline junkie so I’m naturally attracted to things which are likely to cause:

(a) Loss of life or limb
(b) Severe injury
(c) At least the possibility of (a) or (b)

halo

I’ve always wanted to do a HALO jump coz it’s inherently dangerous. It is also very, very cool. Have you watched Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day? Bond was doing a HALO jump in both. The HALO jump is a technique used by the US military to avoid SAM (Surface to Air Missiles) by flying planes high above and dropping personnel at about 30,000 feet.

halo jump

The really interesting thing about a HALO jump is that you have to breathe pure oxygen for at least 30-45 minutes beforehand to flush the nitrogen from your system. You’ll also need an oxygen bottle during the jump. Basically, you jump and freefall all the way down before deploying your chute at a very low altitude for a maximum terminal velocity experience! =D

I’m talking geek, aren’t I? :p

#5 Get a Dell Inspiron 13

soaked notebook

I have extremely bad luck when it comes to gadgets. Two (!!!) of my notebooks got soaked within two weeks coz of a freak thunderstorm that drove rain in ridiculous volumes into my living room. The first was a Dell and it was turned on when the water came in, so naturally, the result wasn’t very pretty. I’m down to my backup notebook which is really slow and I really need a portable and fast notebook coz I like to travel and it’s a hassle to lug a full sized one during my escapades.

dell-inspiron-13

The Inspiron 13 might come across as unusual naming from Dell considering the amount of people with triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13) but there’s actually a good reason behind it. It’s 13.3 inches of sleek, sexy hardware running Intel Core 2 Duo processors and Windows 7. The screen is also in 16:9 aspect ratio which I prefer to 4:3 formats.

inspiron-13

Dell’s Inspiron 13 comes in different colors (but I want the Obsidian Black if I win k?) and with enhanced wireless which supports up to 802.11n and a built in webcam, it is great for connectivity on the go. It’s very portable at 2.22 kg. It’ll be perfect for videoconferencing with Jester while at the office since I’m in PJ and she’s in KL. 😉

Psst… use this special coupon code (7ZQVQF2RLZRKW3) when you purchase a Dell Inspiron 13 from Dell’s website and get RM 100 instant cash redemption. You can also call 1800-88-0301 to order. The coupon expires 10th November 2009.

Planet DELL DELLicious @ Palate Palette

palate palette

Planet DELL
organized an event at Palate Palette last night. It was hyped as the party “before the eve of the new year” and features Lap Sap as one of their performers.

planet dell

The PJ gang (we have earned this moniker due to a misdemeanor and possible felony committed by all of us) descended to the heart of KL to attend this event. The invite came courtesy of Rachel Ying.

dellicious

We got the customary wristband as well as two badges (“Yours is an emo journo” – no shit, Sherlock) and stuff to play with. Yeah, yeah, go ahead, say “Hi, sixthseal.com, darling” and do the air kiss thing. The event was like an invasion of the hip, trendy, trust-fund kids – the Who’s Who of KL, or their offspring anyway. Attack of the Killer Trust Fund Kids. I can’t be fucked to look up who their dads are. 😉

lap sap

Lap Sap didn’t make much of an impression on me. I don’t know what this event is about actually – we were given badges and felt tip pens to graffiti with, but nothing ever happened. It’s more like…a chill out session, which is fine and all, and the old me would have jumped at the open bar, but I guess I was expecting more.

pp water

I wasn’t really impressed by the fact that we had to pay for water, but alcoholic drinks were on the house. I mean, come on, that’s illegal in Australia. Clubs should have free water, no two ways about it. I normally won’t complain, since ethanol is my main tipple but I’m trying to wean off alcohol on the day before my New Year’s resolution kicked in.

pp lains

It sounds a bit wrong after I’ve just said that, but here’s a photo of me doing Jello vodka shots with Lainie.

pp kim

Kimberly, who related an anecdote to me about someone asking her if her real family name is Cun. Heh!

pp joyce

Joyce, with her RM 20,000 haircut. 😉

pp artsy fartsy

The artsy (fartsy) décor of Palate Palette.

pp kim cun

Kim being enthusiastic about the badges.

pp kim graffitti

Planet DELL was alright if I was in the mood to drink…which I usually am. It’s the dearth of participant interaction that killed the event. It’s all good if you just want to hit the gin + tonic and free beers, but if you want more, it’s a bit of a letdown. We left rather early at about 10:30 pm.
