The first online concert by Yuna

I woke up at 8 am and drove to The Bee at Jaya One a few days ago, still bleary eyed and very much wanting to fall asleep at the wheel. It’s early for me considering I just went to sleep at 3 am the previous night to rush for a deadline.

I parked haphazardly and just missed getting a parking ticket with *two* cars to spare. #winning

I guess third time is the charm coz I got two parking tickets in a week before that.

Anyway, I downed some lemonade in The Bee (which is a surefire way of waking you up – it’s so sour it’ll make you pucker up like…erm, I don’t have any polite analogies for that) and started waiting.

Banh Gio in Hanoi

Banh Gio is one of the most amazing epicurean (here’s that word again) discoveries I’ve found in Hanoi, Vietnam. I’ve always been puzzled by the large group of people huddled around this middle aged woman in the Old Quarter and decided to just pull up a chair one day and do it as the locals do.

Banh Gio is basically glutenous rice with a filling of mung beans and pork wrapped in banana leafs into a pyramid shape.

However, that is not what makes it good. Banh Gio is served piping hot and the glutenous rice is so glutenous I’ll equate it to jelly.

It’s melt in your mouth goodness!

I was sitting there when the woman beside me gestured for me to pour some chilli sauce into my banh gio. This is a totally unbiased review since I was so full I wanted to puke. I’ve had too much to eat but the crowded stall just pulled me in to see what the locals eat.

You can opt for various side cuts (also wrapped inside banana leafs) in your banh gio. The texture and and taste it like nothing else! You can literally scoop the banh gio and slurp it down – that’s how soft the glutenous rice is.

Best enjoyed with…their local iced tea. Bet you thought I was gonna say something else. :p

RM 32 nasi kandar

My girlfriend is always getting fleeced by the nasi kandar people. I have a very strong suspicion they don’t like her very much. 😉 She got charged RM 32 for this:

Nasi briyani (a type of flavored rice)
Ayam goreng (fried chicken – drumstick)
Sotong goreng (fried squid)
Daging lembu rendang (beef rendang)
Telur (hard boiled egg)
Sayur (vegetables)

I order the same stuff (with kuah campur – mixed gravy) and I get it for RM 13.50 – RM 15 depending on who’s serving the stuff. There this guy who’s fascinated by my surface bar piercings and tends to charges me less.

The pricing of nasi kandar here is so arbitrary sometimes…
