Menglembu is a town in Perak that’s famous for their peanuts. You know those peanuts with a huge ass thumbs up sign imprinted on the front that’s everywhere during Chinese New Year? Yep, those came from none other than Menglembu, Ipoh.
It’s also famous for their honey chicken so we stopped by Wonderful Honey Chicken on our way back from Penang. It looks like a simple roadside stall but the pure industry that goes on in the small shop lot behind the kitchen is nothing short of amazing.
Unfortunately, their honey roasted chicken was sold out (!!!) so we had to settle for fried chicken, char siew and “paper wrapped chicken” instead.
The char siew is made with the same sauce (e.g. honey) so if you close your eyes while eating the fried chicken dipped into the sauce and concentrate really, really hard, you can sort of imagine what the famous roasted honey chicken tastes like. >.<
*sour grapes*
The coffee shop by the roadside near Wonderful Honey Chicken serves a refreshing bowl of tong sui called Ching Bau Liang, complete with a quail egg! Do check it out if you’re ever in Wai Sek Gai (which is apparently what this entire food street is called).
Menglembu is also famous for their miniature wantan mee and the stall does a very brisk business late at night. We had to wait for about 30 minutes or so to get our chance at the ridiculously small portion of wantan mee.
I wouldn’t say there’s anything special about their wantan mee, it’s probably the Lilliputian serving size that provides most of the appeal. The side order of wantans we had that night was a bit off too.
However, I do like the aunty manning the store, who did an impromptu kung fu pose for me. π
Adui… why whenever I visit your blog sure first post about food ya? Lol… Looks yummy.. π
lol. i bet sibu’s ‘pienyik+kampua’ looks much more better than their miniature wantan mee π
curryegg: Haha! Well, this should be the last of the Ipoh/Penang roadtrip series. π
Yeah, Menglembu is famous for their honey chicken, too bad it ran out when we got there. π
jg: Well, it tastes better, but then again I’m from Sibu so I could be biased since it’s what I grew up eating (well, technically not since I was supposed to be born in Kuching and lived the first 7 years of my life there) but yeah formative years, kampua is the way to go. π
haha, the auntie’s funky enough.
miniature wantan mee, and the mini fish balls.
the other stall that sells a mix of offals also good, something you cant get in most hawker stalls.
J2Kfm: Yeah, I like the aunty, was taking photos when she did that and asked me to take her in that pose. The wantan in the original was good, but the extra wantans we ordered was a bit off – the taste of the soup, don’t know what happened there.
Offal eh? Thanks for the tip, will check it out next trip! π
Wow! With quail egg? That stuff is awesome, you don’t normally see that combination nowadays. Seriously though, that poor aunty looked like she’s trying to defend herself from er,…someone. :O Were you trying to get away without paying the bill this time? π
Hoho, nice Kung fu stunt by auntie!! like the sour grape face…so cute!!
Cheers: Yeah, with a quail egg! I love those things. The only thing I love more is PRESERVED quail eggs e.g. the century quail eggs. Awesome stuff.
Haha! Nah, it was only RM 2 per plate. π
hitomi: Yalor, we didn’t get to eat the honey chicken. π
Lol that auntie is awesome.
And aww the food =(
Gotta go grab a pack of maggie.
Menglembu Wai Sik Gai~~ I like Bak Kut Teh from there π
Ryan: Heh! Indeed, possibly the coolest aunty I’ve ever met…but then again, I think this is a tourist area coz of the fame so she’s probably used to it. π
I’m craving for the paper wrapped chicken now for some reason. :S
Xiaopei: BKT? I must try that next time, didn’t see it when we arrive, but we went pretty late though coz of the jam from Penang to Ipoh. π
HB,I always thought Ching Bau Liang Tea or Soup was out style for young people. It something young people in Hong Kong does not care for they like soft drinks more now days. Yeah wonton does need to eat with noodle but by it self is not enough at all. Could eat two bowls of it.
Eating at small towns while driving is the best. ^_^ Just had a conversation with Ed yesterday, I told him mooncake festival must have the thumb up peanut.
Michael (Mike): I think it is very rare nowadays, at least I can’t find it anywhere, but I’m sure it’s around. Over in Sarawak, we don’t have a habit of consuming tong sui (since our ancestors were not from the Canton province, and double boiled soups isn’t our original culture too). I love the quail egg in ching bau liang though, nice twist. π
fish fish: Yeah indeed! Everything tastes better on a road trip eh?
Haha! You can get the thumbs up peanuts at most Asian groceries, I’ve seen them around in Melbourne. π
The auntie so sporting! Most of the time when i take pictures in stalls like that – especially when they are really busy, the people manning the stall would show me >.
new hair style so cute haha
chefmel: Haha! Sorry to hear that…I would have thought most places are desensitized to it now. π
I think especially in Penang, I always see tourists doing that at the famous stalls. π
hitomi: Eh? It’s not new, I had it cut just before my friend’s wedding in Sibu a couple of months ago…it’s just not styled, never has been since that awesome job by the hairstylist. π
tis the best honey chicken there is!
So this must be the Honey chic that Horng is alws raving abt!
(Sells out very fast; he is alws warning me)
But but but..how to get there?? got GPS?
KY: Unfortunately…we didn’t get to eat it. :S
thenomadGourmand: Yup, it’s Horng’s favorite, apparently quite popular around these parts. I don’t know how to get there, it’s quite complicated the path we took. You’ll have to ask him. π
I think Ipoh is know for other types of chicken….. Try the shop called big sister… LOL
Tuanku: Haha! Bro, are you talking about steamed/roasted chicken or the type that would result in charges of cannibalism? π
wow the honey chic is d bomb! unfortunately u couldn’t get a taste of it. the wantan mee used to sell for rm1.6, how much is it now?
kampungboycitygal: Yeah, we didn’t manage to try it coz it was sold out by the time we got there. π
The wantan mee is RM 2 now. π
I like the tong sui too, coz I love quail eggs and it’s unusual (for me) to see one in a dessert like that. π
