Menglembu Honey Chicken and Mini Wantan Mee

Menglembu is a town in Perak that’s famous for their peanuts. You know those peanuts with a huge ass thumbs up sign imprinted on the front that’s everywhere during Chinese New Year? Yep, those came from none other than Menglembu, Ipoh.

It’s also famous for their honey chicken so we stopped by Wonderful Honey Chicken on our way back from Penang. It looks like a simple roadside stall but the pure industry that goes on in the small shop lot behind the kitchen is nothing short of amazing.

Unfortunately, their honey roasted chicken was sold out (!!!) so we had to settle for fried chicken, char siew and “paper wrapped chicken” instead.

The char siew is made with the same sauce (e.g. honey) so if you close your eyes while eating the fried chicken dipped into the sauce and concentrate really, really hard, you can sort of imagine what the famous roasted honey chicken tastes like. >.<

Ching Bau Liang

The coffee shop by the roadside near Wonderful Honey Chicken serves a refreshing bowl of tong sui called Ching Bau Liang, complete with a quail egg! Do check it out if you’re ever in Wai Sek Gai (which is apparently what this entire food street is called).

Menglembu is also famous for their miniature wantan mee and the stall does a very brisk business late at night. We had to wait for about 30 minutes or so to get our chance at the ridiculously small portion of wantan mee.

I wouldn’t say there’s anything special about their wantan mee, it’s probably the Lilliputian serving size that provides most of the appeal. The side order of wantans we had that night was a bit off too.

However, I do like the aunty manning the store, who did an impromptu kung fu pose for me. πŸ˜‰

    Yeah, Menglembu is famous for their honey chicken, too bad it ran out when we got there. πŸ™
    jg: Well, it tastes better, but then again I’m from Sibu so I could be biased since it’s what I grew up eating (well, technically not since I was supposed to be born in Kuching and lived the first 7 years of my life there) but yeah formative years, kampua is the way to go. πŸ™‚

    the other stall that sells a mix of offals also good, something you cant get in most hawker stalls.

  3. J2Kfm: Yeah, I like the aunty, was taking photos when she did that and asked me to take her in that pose. The wantan in the original was good, but the extra wantans we ordered was a bit off – the taste of the soup, don’t know what happened there.

  7. HB,I always thought Ching Bau Liang Tea or Soup was out style for young people. It something young people in Hong Kong does not care for they like soft drinks more now days. Yeah wonton does need to eat with noodle but by it self is not enough at all. Could eat two bowls of it.

  8. Michael (Mike): I think it is very rare nowadays, at least I can’t find it anywhere, but I’m sure it’s around. Over in Sarawak, we don’t have a habit of consuming tong sui (since our ancestors were not from the Canton province, and double boiled soups isn’t our original culture too). I love the quail egg in ching bau liang though, nice twist. πŸ™‚

    Haha! You can get the thumbs up peanuts at most Asian groceries, I’ve seen them around in Melbourne. πŸ™‚

    hitomi: Eh? It’s not new, I had it cut just before my friend’s wedding in Sibu a couple of months ago…it’s just not styled, never has been since that awesome job by the hairstylist. πŸ˜‰
