Durian runtuh!
It’s durian season again. π
I went to Donald’s Durian which is just beside SS2 durian over the weekend to binge on the King of Fruits. The price has gone up since I last went β it’s now RM 10 for the durian buffet…but there’s heaps of people even at midnight!
You don’t get the good durians like Musang King/Raja Kunyit/D197 at that price though β it’s sold separately, was quoted RM 22/kg here which is quite cheap. Musang King apparently means Elvis Presley, an interesting name to call a strain.
The RM 10 durian buffet is everywhere in SS2 now and you can eat to your hearts content on various lower grade durians. It’s a very good deal, and you get tissues and water to go with it. π
There’s a lot of the common but relatively premium D24, D101 and Holo/Labu/D163 durians for sale too. Funny thing was, we almost forgot to pay, we were leaving and then I suddenly remembered that we haven’t paid and went back to do so. No one stopped us, probably coz of the crowd. Heh.
I’m looking for Durian Botak (D172) and the Sarawakian durian called Kepala Babi (D170) β anyone seen them around? π
no durian buffet in swk or else i whack kao kao. lol.
Yeah, I noticed that that’s something we’re missing too.
However, you can get “unofficial” durian buffets from the durian seller. Just pay an agreed upon price and ask him to open a couple of durians.
Eat until you’re done and pay him the price. Of course, you won’t get the good durians this way but sometimes you can. π
Wow!!! It’s in season there? Not a sign of any here… π
Yup, durian season has come to KL! π
Well, technically PJ but that’s splitting hairs. This is the most commercial place for durian buffets but on the upside it also means that their durian turnover is very rapid.
It’s also convenient coz it’s near my place. π
I cant wait to makan durian too, the wifey doesn’t fancy durians, hence I have to go makan alone most of the time. Bring me along one of these days bro. π
on a side note, my company will be holding a durian fest for its employees next week. How cool is that? Hahaha
Heh! Sure thing bro. π
Yeah, I like eating durians, one of my favorite fruits. It was a treat to eat them when I was a kid – I can eat 3-4 mid sized durians all by myself.
I learned to cut open the fruits at 7 years old. π
Nice, a durian fest!
This is the only thing i miss about KL – durian buffet in ss2. Can’t find a similar buffet anywhere else in northern states.
Yeah, that’s the good thing about the durian buffet, but if you want quality durians, you’ll have to buy it.
I like Red Prawn (Ang Hae) which I ate in Penang but I can’t find it over here. The Northern States has a lot of good durian strains, Sarawak does too, can’t find them here though. π
there’s such durian buffet in penang, but i have never been to one. normally we buy per biji or per kilo one. you’re in penang this month right? if balik pulau is too far for you, try the one at batu lanchang! there’s a man selling super yum (!!!) durian right in front of the entrance of the hawkers! by the road one
Oooh, nice you have a lot of good durians like Ang Hae (Red Prawn) in Penang, which we can’t get in KL/PJ.
We actually have a wild durian that has red flesh in Sarawak too, but it doesn’t taste like Penang’s Red Prawn.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll go durian hunting! Wanna join? π
Been to this here place a few times and it comes highly recommended from myself. Too bad Kuching sellers never took to this trend. Then again durians are cheaper back home.
Worth mentioning I paid RM 15 for a buffet in which the durians served are “pedigree” durians eg. non-kampung durians. I felt it was worth the extra; all the durians I had tasted fine and were of reasonable quality.
Yeah, it’s a pretty good price for low grade durians, and you can eat all you want to satisfy your cravings.
I like how you can also buy the premium durians to bring back and eat another day.
Hey, nice, they didn’t have the RM 15 buffet when I went, I’m going there again soon, will check it out. Cheers mate! π
I’m coming over very soon…but don’t think I’ll be trying the durian…managed to escape it so far! Hey, do you know of anything on 21st or 22nd July? Bands, clubs, anything?
Heh! You really should try it if you can Leanne! π
It’s an experience in itself. You’ll either love it or hate it but at least you’ll know.
Hmm…at that time, I’m not aware of any bands or raves going on but clubs will always have events. Hope that helps! π
Apparently musang king is supposed to mean cat king which in Chinese represents Elvis Presley due to the fact he was called Hillbilly Cat and the King of Bop. Was wondering how fox king translates to Elvis Presley.
Aha! So that’s how it got it’s name. Thanks for that! π
I was wondering why Musang King would be Elvis Presley too, but it’s apparently so in Chinese, just not when Romanized. π
I always drive pass SS2 and see the durian buffet outlets along the way, but never stopped by to eat.
Perhaps one day! π
Yeah, it’s definitely worth the RM 10 if you like durians.
I’ll eat the durian buffet to satisfy cravings and buy the more expensive ones for later to savor. π
For RM10, it’s still very cheap. I alone can probably eat 2 durians? My mom love durians too and the last time we were at Donald’s, we bought the D101 which is very nice in colour and taste too.
Yeah, I ate 3 that day by myself. Heh. π
Not bad, you can eat 2 durians. I can eat a lot actually, but it really fills you up past the third fruit and you don’t get to enjoy it as much.
D101 is nice, personally prefer XO coz it’s slightly bitter and has this mild ethanol taste. Musang King is overrated, not worth the price IMHO, especially since we don’t get the AAA ones which are for export.
I’ll eat it but there’s cheaper and better durians out there. π
from the last picture, it may looked like you had (a) drunk alcohol beforehand (with durians, it will be a toxic mix, as said from an urban legend) or, (b) ate too much durians as to ‘over-heated’ oneself, due to the heaty nature of the fruit…
Heh! I didn’t drink at all that day. π
It’s probably the lighting. I’ve had durians with various ethanol based drinks before though – cognac, whisky, beer and I’m fine. π
It’s an urban legend.
HB, I am happy that durian is now popular in Hawaii due to mast Southeast Asian now living in there. People there local one now like it too which mean more durians in demand now in Hawaii also. I still try to like it if could get past the smell of it of .
Nice! What kind of durians do you get?
The ones I’ve seen in Melbourne are all frozen Thailand durians. It’s okay if you’re craving for it, but it can’t beat fresh durians.
Yeah, you should try it – just taste it, don’t think about the smell.
Maybe you’ll like it. π
The person who named the species must be a huge fan of elvis then!
Heh! Yeah, I imagine he is. π
There’s a lot of durians strains with interesting names. You can taste the difference between the various DXXX clones and strains (which all have their own names, the DX designation is for cataloging and reference) if you love durians.
However, some of the best durians I’ve had were durian kampungs which sometimes can produce a quality fruit, especially the old trees. π
Dude, the one of the team member who named the D series now lives in L.A., I met her a couple years ago.
Nice! That would make for an interesting dinner conversation – how it all started and how the durian DX naming system works (it’s not sequential, to the best of my knowledge).
…and especially how the credits are done (each DX durian has a credit – to the original horticulturist who did it). A lot of durians are based on popular strains and tweaked, much like cannabis. π
Musang King prices have dropped to all time low. Donald’s selling at RM13/kg before bargaining. Shop around at other stalls nearby, a few selling at RM10/kg. D24 is available at RM5/kg too.
May i know what u close?? since i want to bring few of my east malaysia friend come to eat today but we will reach ss2 about 12am midnight….wondering still open?
I have not had fresh Durian for over 50 years when I lived in Sarawak. Tonite I am in Hong Kong and will eat only a small portion because of its extremely high price. Remember to drink 7Up after you finish a Durian feast. Then each time it ‘repeats’ it will also be ‘carbonated’…..
