5 exotic tropical fruit sandwiches

tropical sandwiches

I call this the Silat Buah Edition of my continuing bread story! smirk

1. Mangosteen sandwiches

mangosteens

It’s the season for mangosteens now. Mangosteens season is the end of the year and the smaller ones do not have seeds, making it perfect for sandwiches!

mangosteen sandwiches

It’s a refreshing experiment but to be honest, not all that good.

2. Starfruit sandwiches

starfruit

I saw this jar of local government FAMA produced belimbing (starfruit) jam on sale once and bought a tub of it. I then sauntered over to the fruits section and got myself 3 starfruits.

I decided to slather the starfruit jam and then cut starfruit slices on top of it to make a starfruit sandwich with real fruit.

starfruit sandwich

I had to choke it down – the jam is crappy and almost inedible, full of sugar and a weird flavoring that has little to do with starfruit. Another one of my failed experiments. I still can’t bring myself to eat the jam – it’s still sitting in the fridge after another try on it’s own. Vile stuff.

3. Jackfruit sandwiches

jackfruit

You can get the fresh ones at SS2 night market. I found it much better than the ones at the local hypermarket. It’s one of the more expensive fruits around at over RM 9 / kg. I just slid the fruit between bread since it’s quite flavorful by itself.

It should probably be noted that seeds should be taken out before inserting into bread. It’s pretty good – especially when paired with cream cheese spread!

4. Durian sandwiches

durian

It might be heresy to some to use the precious durian as a sandwich filling. It’s expensive (recently bought a Holo durian for RM 33 with less than 10 seeds, costing over RM 3 each) so I used the more common D24 strain (RM 6 / kg) for this experiment.

I thought since it works so well with glutinous rice (seriously, durian and mangoes are perfect with glutinous rice) I reckon it might be okay with bread.

durian sandwiches

Nope, I still consider it a waste – I had to use about 4 seeds to gather enough flesh for a sandwich – it’s good, but durians deserve better treatment.

5. Jambu sandwiches

jambu

I saw this juicy local fruit at RM 8 / kg from a local roadside stand and it turned out to be one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever made! πŸ™‚

fruit sandwiches

The secret is chunky peanut butter.

Jambu with chunky peanut butter has a very complex texture – the pure water squirting out of the fruit, the stickiness of peanut butter and the chewiness of bread. The flavor profile is amazing too – kinda like eating an apple with peanut butter (used to do that as a kid).

This is the tropical version – salty and buttery and sweet with refreshing bursts.

I did a lot of tongue-in-cheek sandwiches for fun but this…

…this is the eureka moment, I discovered something I’ll really continue eating. It’s truly a great fruit sandwich! πŸ™‚

  1. Not a fan of all those fruits…but I think durian would be great. Make durian cream, sure it will go every well with bread. After all, they have all the durian desserts – durian pancake, durian cream puffs, durian swiss roll etc.

    • Haha! That starfruit jam is just awful though.

I bought it coz I thought it was interesting – it’s a local FAMA produced product and as much as I’ll like to support low food miles and locally made products, it has to be good in the first place. This wasn’t.

I’ve eaten very good boutique (call it such coz it’s expensive at RM 4.70 for just a tiny tub) homemade kaya at the SS2 night market – that’s the way to go – direct to customer.

      Cheers Jessy! πŸ™‚

I really wanted to do a special edition for the New Year but ended up having not enough tropical fruit (got bananas but it’s Dole – so can’t exactly call it local).

      OMG you don’t like durian?

      To each his/her own.

It’s one of those either you love it or hate it things. I love it.

I also love the title of your site…now *that* is pure win. πŸ˜‰

hey if you could improve the presentation maybe you could start your own Subway..
last time when I was younger I use to eat durian with rice and my friends found it weird..

    • Heh! Thanks bro! πŸ™‚

Yeah, but most of the sandwiches doesn’t taste good – only the jambu with peanut butter does.

It’s a Sabah thing for me, I first saw that practice of eating durian with glutenous rice in Sabah (mangoes were in Thailand.

      Cheers!

  4. If you are still into experiment, try using (a) mango and whipped cream (b) banana & cheese or nutella (c) thinly sliced apples & sliced cheese. If you have used the durian mixed with cream, it might be nicer then. enjoy.

    • Thanks for the tip Doreen! πŸ™‚

Yup, I’ve had banana with peanut butter and Nutella, the addition of cheese would be interesting though.

Mango and whipped cream sounds good.

Apples and sliced cheese too, it was one of the things I used to eat as a kid, that and slices of apples slathered with peanut butter.

    • Heh! Yeah, I love bread! πŸ™‚

Surprisingly, I don’t have butter in my fridge although I love it.

I’m going to get some, come to think of it.

      Thanks Charmaine!

    • Nice! I eat that a lot too! πŸ™‚

Bananas with Nutella or peanut butter. They both work well with each other.

      Cheers Constance!

    • Heh! I wish I could but none of the sandwiches were particularly outstanding except for the jambu + peanut butter.

Thanks for the vote of confidence though.

It would be interesting to open and F&B outlet eh? I’ll be sure to ensure you’re the first to try it out if I go down that path.

    • Haha! I just wanted to make a fun edition of the continuing bread story. πŸ™‚

The durians are too wasteful, I used D24 durians instead of the more expensive ones.

It’s good stuff, but better eaten alone. πŸ˜€

    • Yeah, I totally agree Rose! πŸ™‚

Don’t try that durian sandwich, it’s good but not good enough.

I highly recommend eating durian on it’s own.

      Cheers! πŸ™‚

  6. I was served a fried salad dish at Desaru with jambu before and it was really good. I suppose it’s a bit like having a cucumber sandwich since it is the same texture. By that extension, apples / pears might work just as well.

I think Durian might be better on white bread and not wholemeal. White bread is more neutral in taste.

Starfruit jam sounds really disgusting. I wonder what possessed the makers to create something like that!

    Reply
    • Yeah, come to think of it, it has a lot of characteristics of cucumber – same amount of bursting juice, not very dissimilar flavor profile, and when sliced thinly enough…

It’s absolutely vile, that starfruit jam, they have other tropical fruits as well but I’m not inclined to try anytime soon.

I’m all for local low-food miles but these are chock full of preservatives and sugar instead of healthy, close-to-the-orchard stuff.

Apples are great with peanut butter, it was a favorite childhood snack – I’ll eat them by slicing the apples into chunks and spreading peanut butter on them.

      Cheers Mela! πŸ˜€

  7. I’ve always loved to eat fruits on its own but truth be told, I’m not sure if I can stand the taste of mangosteen in my sandwiches. I have eaten fruits with bread before, but not together in one plate.

By the way, HB, are there any plans on expanding this bread story into a rice story? I can suggest a couple of ways as starters. =D

    • I like the tarty taste of mangosteens – always found it very refreshing! Too bad it comes around only once a year.

Yup! I am planning to expand this into a rice story!

I’m keen to hear your tips Ciana!

      Thanks for sharing! πŸ˜€

      • No problem!

Here’s two tips: leftover rice with mayonnaise (or Worcestershire sauce, if you wish) and leftover rice with soup (you know, the ones like chicken or vegetable soup?).

        Hope it helps! =D

    • Nice! I haven’t tried it with peanut butter!

I bet it’ll taste awesome though – the tarty taste of the fruit offset by the sticky peanut butter.

      Good one missy! πŸ˜€

  8. Oh gosh, I’ve never thought of making sandwiches like this and you have showed me the way! Haha. I’m gonna try the nangka and durian one, I bet it’s gonna be awesome!

    Reply
    • Haha! Yeah, the durian one is going to be awesome but a bit of a waste of durian though.

The jambu one is good if you can get your hands on some.

      Cheers mate! πŸ™‚

    • HAHAHA

That’s the absolute *worst* sandwich I ever made. πŸ™‚

The jam is super loaded with sugar, preservatives and flavoring despite being a national farmer’s initiative (cheat one).

I just thought it would be funny to have a starfruit jam sandwich with real starfruit. Horrible stuff.

The jambu one with peanut butter is good though.

      Cheers Yee Ling! πŸ˜€
