The Stall with No Name – great herbal chicken

stall no name

There is a stall in town that doesn’t have a name but serves up great herbal chicken twice a day. The operation is quite quaint and rather appealing in a sense – tables are lined along the side of a narrow lane and you can practically see flora growing out of cracks in the centuries-old building.

quaint operation

The food choices are quite simple – there’s herbal chicken drumstick (which I highly recommend) and stewed pork (which doesn’t taste good to me). They both cost RM 6.

All the provisions for washing up and cooking is located right by the stall itself. The clientèle consists of office workers around the area, according to the proprietor.

The herbal chicken is cooked in aluminium foil and this retains a lot of the moisture of the drumstick.

reconstituted pork

The meat for the stewed pork on the other hand is picked from a container and then mixed with hearty broth from a large simmering pot by the side. I don’t think much of “reconstituted meals” like this – it works for some items, but not pork, since what comes out will be one tough piece of un-kosher meat.

I am hugely impressed by the herbal chicken though. The tasty broth bursts out of the foil when it’s opened and the hot, hearty soup goes very well with rice – it’s very salty.

lane stall

The chicken is ultra-tender too – the meat literally falls apart from the bone when you pick one up. Delicious, and a rather good find in the alleyways of KL.

The Stall with No Name is located in Lorong Bandar 4. It’s open from 10 am – 3 pm and then again from 5 pm to 10 pm. Go for the mouth-watering tender herbal chicken. 😀

    • Heh! We were walking around Lorong Bandar 2 and 4, this is in the latter, but the two lanes actually intersect so it’s hard to tell – but seeing as though the lane is very short in itself, you can find it if you just turn into Lorong Bandar 4.

The pork isn’t great – horrible piece of tough un-kosher meat, but the tender herbal chicken is awesome!

      Cheers mate! 🙂

  1. I think they’re only open on weekdays for lunch (office crowd), but no more open evenings nor public holidays/ weekends if I’m not mistaken…

    • Nice! I thought they’re only closed that day coz it’s a public holiday. 🙂

I wouldn’t mind going back again – saved the coordinates so I can go back that day, together with the yam place. Cheers!

    • Haha! Yeah, I think that contributed a lot to the atmosphere of the place. The chicken is good, the pork isn’t.

      I love the ambiance. 😀

      Cheers!

  3. You like herbal chicken? Hmmmm…can take you to one great place here when you come back – the Foochow versions, of course, not ginseng and stuff.

Hmmmm…the council people would nab them here if they open up a stall by the roadside like this – not allowed – bad for the image of the place and of course, there’s the question of cleanliness. I wouldn’t want to eat there either – would be dripping in my sweat…and those flimsy plastic stools can’t stand my weight. Hehehehehe!!!!

    • Yup! It’s great! 🙂

I’ll love to go to the one in Sibu, will be coming back in less than a month.

I think they do have a council license to operate – just no name to the stall.

It’s pretty cool there though, there’s shade under. Cheers buddy! 😀

I thought of the title coz of the movie “The Man With No Name” – an oldie but goldie – Clint Eastwood’s best Western, IMHO.

I love hidden gems like this. I agree, that’s why I love your reviews – always genuine and good to read. I like how adventurous you are too.

This one is just down an alley about 100 meters max, but if you have trouble finding it, not that you need to, I saved the coordinates last time I was there so I can go back. It’s 3.14873,101.697483.

  5. Any chance that green flora fungus mouldings on the wall could be the secret ingredients too? Just pluck it put inside the soup. Yummy…Talk about herbal soup lah He He He He

    • Hmm…I seriously doubt it coz there’s still fungi growing. 😉

Haha! It might drop in while you’re eating if the wind is blowing though.

However, it’s a covered walkway so all is good. Cheers!

  6. I work around that area and know that place. Saw your post and went there for lunch yesterday.

Walking distance from Masjid Jamek LRT. But they always force you to order a set (herbal chicken and pork that you have highlighted above, plus soup and vegetables) if you go there in group of 3 or more.

    • Hey, thanks for the input about the area buddy! 🙂

Interesting about how they force you to order like that – they tried something to that effect with us (2 pax) too but we wanted to try everything anyway, so it’s all good. We got free soup too!

Hmm…if they want to force people to order accordingly, it doesn’t sound good…

Would they let you take off items and order as you want if you go in a group?

Cheers again for the inside information mate, wouldn’t have known unless I was a regular. 😀

  7. I like herbal chicken and sometimes I will cook it at home. The herbal essence sipped in the drumstick looks so additive. It is one of the comfort meals during cooling day.

    • Nice! I’ll love to eat your herbal chicken. 😀

Indeed, it makes the chicken soooooo tender that it practically falls off the bone.

The herbal chicken essence is really good too – awesome stuff.

Comfort meals eh? Yeah, I reckon it’ll be a great one on a cool day.

      Cheers Yee Ling! 🙂
