It slices and it dices!

sibu vege promotor

I saw this promoter for this kitchen appliance that was going for a
very affordable RM 19.90 and yet seems to have the integrated
funtionality to replace most of your kitchen items. I watched the demo
just now at a shopping center in Sibu and the promoter was coaxing me
to get it for my gf or my mom coz she noticed me taking pictures of
her. πŸ˜‰

I said I’ll think about it and I’ll come back if I decided I need it, and she said she’ll wait for me.

I hope she’s kidding, coz it’s going to be one hell of a long wait. :p

Sibu 96000

sibu 2005 louisa me

I’m in Sibu right now. I totally forgot about the long Labor Day
weekend and just booked my tickets at 10:30 am today and the only
available flight was at 2:20 pm so I decided to take a break and get
some R&R back home…hook up with my gf, visit my family, and get
some righteous pharmaceuticals…not necessarily in that order… πŸ˜‰

I’m kidding!

Though the ampoules (the contents of which will remain unnamed for
now, but will be reviewed soon – and don’t comment about the
significance of the word ampoule for those in the know, for Christ’s sake :p) I just took was real good. Real good. πŸ™‚

I’m going to nod now…

Breakfast at Sungai Merah

sg merah breakfast

This is the place my late paternal grandfather used to bring a bunch
of us kids to eat on Sundays. It’s the central heart of Heng Hua Sibu
and things here have been kept relatively the same. People of all sorts
come here – white collar workers and blue collar workers all eat here,
there’s no distinction. I went there for an very early breakfast with a
couple of people just now.

sg merah ambience

It has the best coffee in town; I estimate the caffeine content as
the equivalent of a double shot of Starbucks espresso. I love the
homely feel of the place – people can bring their own food if they want
(see the photo of the tapioca in the middle). Tapioca tastes great with
coffee. The place also has the best fried-cooked noodles (char chu mien, a Foochow dish) in Sibu. It’s noodles which are fried, and then recooked in a soup dish.

sg merah air outlet

Breakfast at Sungai Merah is nostalgic, and the patrons just keep on
coming in, it’s always full. Look at the industry going on with the
industrial sized cooking air outlet!

Sungai Merah will always remain as the heart of Sibu to me.

Sibu, here we come!

huygens sibu sept

I’m flying to Sibu again tonight with my CTO and CFO on the
company’s account. My return ticket is open, courtesy of my CFO, who
thought I might want to stay back for the weekend after our meeting
there on Friday afternoon and another one on Saturday afternoon. I
think I’ll pass on that though, I’ll just go with them, in and out, and
be back by Saturday night.

You’re an illegal immigrant!

sibu illegal indo

No sir, I’m not.
Oh yes, you are!
Am not!
Am to!

It turns out that they were illegal immigrants from Indonesia after
all. The blue ones are police and the green ones are RELA (Vigilante
Corps). They were led away by the whole entourage in handcuffs. I was
walking by and saw this and stopped to listen and take photos. Things
like this always draw a crowd in Sibu.

I guess that says a lot about how exciting my hometown is. πŸ˜‰

Sugarcane drink at Central Market Sibu

pasar sentral sibu

I arrived in Sibu late yesterday night, the flight was delayed
(again) due to an engine problem. I woke up early this morning and was
on site at 7:30 am. I’m on a break now and I went to Central Market to
get a sugarcane drink. It’s a hot day, and I reckon one of these would
go down well.

pasar sentral sugarcane skin

It seems that the coconut + sugarcane or cham cham as they
call it in Hokkien has hit Sibu. IIANM, the pioneer of this 1/2
sugarcane, 1/2 coconut juice with coconut flesh is the SKH food centre
in Kuching. It seem to have propagated to Sibu now, with even the
central market doing it.

pasar sentral sugarcane togo

I got one to go. I like this stall coz they actually skin the
sugarcane plant before grinding it in that grinder you see on the
bottom left. The majority of stalls just shove the whole sugarcane in,
but this one manually and painstakingly removes the outer skin from the
sugarcane before processing it, ensuring a smoother drink.

This is the reserve sugarcane bunches they have on the side.

Sibu kampua mee

sibu kampua mee

This is my favorite place for no-frills kampua mee in Sibu. Everyone
has their favorite stall and most would swear by that one. Basically,
kam pua mee is a noodle dish that can be made within seconds – dropping
the noodles into a hot, boiling broth and then mixing it with oil (some
use vegetable, but purists will accept nothing but pork), soy sauce
(optional), chilli sauce (optional) and spring onions and fried onions.
It is then served with several slices of char siew or BBQ pork and a
bowl of soup. It’s fast food, Sibu style.

sibu kampua sauce
The sauce is prepared first according to your order – you can choose to
have it plain (just ask for kampua), with soy sauce (“kampua puak tau
yu” in Foochow, tau yu being soya/soy sauce), with chilli sauce
(“kampua puak lak”, lak being a direct translation of “hot”) or both
(“kampua puak lak puak tau yu”, cascading the words).

sibu kampua cooking
The noodles is then dropped into the boiling broth and cooked for a
while. You can opt for the flat noodles if you want, otherwise the
default is the round noodles.

sibu kampua mixing
The cooked noodles is then mixed with the sauce(s).

sibu kampua soy chilli
This is how I like my kampua – with chilli sauce and soya sauce.
