Jony’s or Jonah’s Fruit Shakes – which is the original?

Jony’s Boracay’s Original & Famous Fruit Shakes. Well, that’s what it says on the signboard anyway. Heh. Jonah’s Fruitshakes is the original place to go if you’re craving for a mango fruit shake, spawning a host of imitators, usually with variations on the name like Jony’s, Jody’s etc.

Note the slight difference in spelling?

That’s how it works in Boracay, I saw 3 (!!!) different Yellow Cab Pizza while I was there too. The above is the original. There’s also a hilarious one which dubs itself Tapsi Cab (with similar font and colors) which is basically run out of someone’s house, but it actually served pretty decent burgers at a really cheap price.

…so who cares, as long as it’s good? πŸ˜€

Back to Jony’s Fruit Shakes, it’s part of Jony’s Beach Resort and it’s located at Point 1 at White Beach. It’s actually a pretty nice place to chill and enjoy the sea breeze. They also serve food from different parts of the Philippines as well.

It’s rather overpriced and commercialized (saw a huge group of Chinese tourists come in) but I reckon that’s the price you pay (smirk) in places like Boracay – which was why I avoided the overrated and over-mentioned Ibu Oka franchise in Bali and asked in Denpasar for place where the locals go for babi guling instead.

The restaurant attached to Jony’s Fruit Shakes is called Maya’s and I would give it a wide berth if I were you. The food is very mediocre and there are better choices around for the equivalent of RM 25-30 per dish restaurants. Go for the shakes, not the food.

This comes with 3 dipping sauces and is from the Luzon area. It’s pretty good – freshly fried and crispy, bit it’s the dip that makes the dish work…and seafood in Boracay is super fresh!

I actually wanted goat kalderatta (a Panay dish of goat stewed in coconut wine) but they ran out of that, so I went for this one instead. It’s supposed to be a festive local dish of chicken simmered in soy sauce, spices and vinegar with organic chicken liver mousse.

I was really hungry then so it tasted good but in hindsight it’s really below average and quite forgettable. Except for the chicken liver mousse. That is superb!

…now for the shakes!

Just look at the sheer variety they have to offer. You can custom make it yourself too – simply request for the stuff you want and they’ll mix it for you.

This is a Mango, Pineapple and Banana fruit shake. PHP 100.
It’s really good. The tart and sweet mango is balanced by the smooth banana and pineapple lends a tang to it. The shakes costs about RM 8-10 each, depending on what you want.

Bananatella fruit shake. I don’t even know if this can be called a β€œfruit shake” anymore. Heh. It’s a mixture of bananas and Nutella! Now, isn’t that awesome!

I really loved the fruit shakes at Jony’s but you’ll have to drink it really, really fast. I really don’t know if Jonah’s is better, but Jony’s does an awesome fruit shake! It’s wonderfully thick and difficult to suck up the straw at first but that’s the optimum time to drink it coz the minute ice particles inside will dilute the drink down as time progresses.

It’s subject to entropy as all things are. πŸ˜‰

Drink up as soon as you’re served! It’s loaded with calories and sinfully delicious, but it’s also sensational – a sublime beach drink. πŸ˜€

      You know, there’s a Chinese saying that goes “a fish head has 18 flavors” – which I tend to agree with – the lips, etc are awesome, but not fried like that. It’s the steamed ones that retain the flavor.

      Yeah, the fruit shakes at Boracay is really good – there’s a couple there, all about the same price and they allow customization so you can have other fruits in addition to mango.

  1. Gosh, Jonah’s milkshake brings back sweet memories of my trip to Boracay a few years ago. It’s by far the BEST milkshake I”ve ever had, we went there everyday for that! I dont know how they do it but it’s so good.

    • Nice! Yeah, there’s a lot of fruit shakes opening up nowadays – there’s the original Jonah, then Jony’s and Jody’s etc. There are all variations of the name.

      I even saw three different Yellow Cab pizza places, some of them with really funny names like Tapsi Cab but with the same font, style and color. Haha!

      Yeah, the thing about the shakes is that you have to drink it really fast or else it’ll be diluted. I see people carrying around the take-away 500 ml mineral water bottles filled with fruit shake with a straw sticking up on top around the beach all the time.

      The mango based ones are really good eh?

      I’m a huge fan of Nutella too so I ordered that one. It’s really good but you have to drink it fast or else it’ll be diluted when it melts. I think it’s the tiny ice crystals inside it – it’s thick and deliciously heavy when you first drink it but after 30 minutes it starts to get slightly diluted.

      I don’t know if that happens to all fruit shakes or just the Bananatella one but the mango, pineapple and banana one also dilutes slightly after a while.

      The best thing is, you can customize it too! My Bananatella is PHP 120 (not including tax) which is about RM 9 and you can add more stuff like Oreos, toffee, peanut butter or the various fruits and they’ll charge you accordingly.

      I loved it!

    • Yeah, me too! I particularly like heavy shakes like peanut butter shakes. Heh.

      The chicken dish was alright, I was *really* hungry when I ate this so I thought it was pretty decent and the best thing is it has exactly one portion each of:
      1. Drum
      2. Wing
      3. Thigh
      4. Breast

      …and there’s the wonderful liver mousse which made it great. Otherwise it was pretty forgettable. I love the liver mousse though, the mouthfeel is amazing – umami.

      Nice! Yeah, having a maid to cook authentic dishes from the Philippines would be awesome!

  2. mango and avacado fruitshake is my fav!! i drink 5 of these each day when i was at boracay. i don’t take sugar and useless calories usually but the shakes are just just just SOOOO addictive!!! :))

    • Wow! That’s a lot per day. Heh. I could probably drink as much but not of the same kind. I’ll mix and match a bit to get sweet, sour etc.

      I agree, the fruit shakes at Boracay are really good. This one is decent, the trick is to just drink it before the ice particles inside melts.

      I saw a lot of people carrying around the shakes in a recycled 500 ml mineral water bottle (the glasses are about that quantity – a pint or so) to go. I didn’t manage to take a photo coz I drank it there and then but the straw is sticking right out of a hole cut into the screw on top. Nice.

      I really liked Boracay too! It’s a fun vibe kinda beach.

    • Yeah, the fish was surprisingly good, probably coz it was just so fresh!

      The seafood in Boracay is awesome – they even have buffets of seafood where you can eat a wide range of stuff from crabs to prawns for about RM 25-30. The prices for a la carte is pretty cheap when you covert it into MYR too, which is surprising considering this is a very touristy destination.

      …even the locals flock there to have fun.

      Haha! I don’t think it’s psychological – drinking milk before sleeping *does* help. However, I don’t get that reaction from shakes, I don’t think most of the fruit based ones has any milk inside, only the sweet ones e.g. peanut butter, toffee, Nutella etc.

      I wanted to try a local goat dish cooked in coconut wine but unfortunately, they didn’t have goat that day. Oh well.

      I used my dSLR for that shot – out of all the photos I took, one turned out *REALLY* good e.g. I could see it didn’t need any Photoshop or anything like that.

      It’s purely accidental, I assure you. This is a perfect example of luck and the dSLR functioning properly (for once).

      The liver mousse is that slab of beige-gray sludge on the rightmost side of the dish. It’s the part which is really good. The chicken is quite forgettable actually.

  4. HB, shakes look so good. Wonder if made with milk and ice cream. My cousin is half Filipino and Chinese eat this type of food due her dad is Filipino and my aunt Chinese.

    • Nope, most of them are not made with milk or ice cream, the fruit shakes are almost completely made of blended fruit and a little bit of ice, it’s really good.

      I think this kind of food is quite common in this region, we have variants of it as well, quite similar in taste, just different names.

      Heh! Yup, that was what lured my attention when I saw the menu too. It’s really, really good – thick and creamy, just as a shake should be like. Bananas goes well with Nutella, I imagine putting slices of banana in a sandwich spread with Nutella would be equally good.

      Yeah, the adobon manok is a little like the stir fried chicken we get over here, just a little spicier and with a side of liver mousse. That was the best part! Chicken liver mousse, it makes my mouth water just to think of it. I love liver!

      The Tilapia fish is very fresh, loved that one, it’s in a place called Maya’s near Point 1 at White Beach in Boracay. There’s no large signage though, it’s part of Jony’s Beach Resort and they feature their fruit shakes more prominently.

      I didn’t see anyone else eating…just drinking the fruit shakes.

      The fruit shakes there are lovely. It’s about the price of Starbucks/Coffee Bean over here but well worth it, it’s made mostly of fruits and it’s very, very thick and creamy.

      The Bananatella is my favorite – although the mango is a must try in Boracay, that’s what they’re famous for.

      Nevertheless, it’s really good though, the fruit shakes – it’s more like a smoothie mate.

      The population of the Philippines has a MUCH higher English fluency rate than our country though – everyone I bumped into can speak it to varying degrees of aptitude but it’s A LOT better than what Malaysians are capable of…not surprising considering their heritage.
