How I came back from Frankfurt with more Euros than I went with

euro 700

This is a funny (and true) story which I haven’t written about. I’ve been recovering my crashed HDD photos and came across this bunch. This is from my third Europe trip in 2012 and I actually didn’t bring much Euros there coz the hotel and food was paid for. Thus, I went to Germany with a total of 400 Euros in my wallet.

I travelled the country from Dresden to Berlin and when it was time to come back home, I took a flight from Berlin to Frankfurt. Yes, this was the ill-fated flight that delayed me for almost 2 days. Thank God I was flying Business Class so I had a hotel room and food comped at Sheraton (heard the Economy passengers had to choose between either a shower or a meal).

frankfurt casino

Long story short, I was stuck at Fraport for a long time so I thought I might go to the Frankfurt Airport Casino to see how my luck holds up. The good thing about casinos in airports in Europe is that they actually allow cameras – as long as you don’t take photos of other patrons (croupiers and tables are okay). I did the same at Holland Casino in Amsterdam.

Anyway, I tried putting 100 Euros on Player. They only had a Baccarat table open at the time but that’s my game of choice anyway so it’s all good. I ended up losing all my 400 Euros *and* an additional 1,000 Euros to the house! A friend of mine had joined me at this point and was playing at the Blackjack table. I told him I’m out to withdraw more money and I’ll join him in a bit.

He later told me he was quite worried about me. I had withdrawn 2,000 Euros at this point and it was all from my credit card! My ATM card had not worked the entire trip. He was there on business so he had a bit of petty cash to play around with but I was using my own money and I was losing lots of it. I decided that the last 1,000 Euros be dedicated to the Blackjack table – a game I do not play much.

frankfurt casino chips

However, as soon as I sat down, I kept winning. I lost count of how many times I got a natural 21, which pays 3-2. I was so caught up with the game that I didn’t even realize I had gotten my bankroll back until my friend nudged me and asked me (he knew I was down 2,400 Euros at this point). I just wish I’ll be somewhere close to this lucky as well when I go play on www.ipadcasino.com.au later! I was actually hovering around the Euro 2,200 point so I took the 2,000 Euros and cashed out, with only 200 Euros to win back the remaining 400 Euros I’ve lost.

fraport casino win

I did have a nasty thought run through my mind at this point – I had tipped the croupier almost 500 Euros at this point (!!!) and would have won if I hadn’t tipped him (tipping the dealer is not allowed in most Asian casinos and will likely get you kicked out). I didn’t realize it, I subconsciously threw a Euro 20 chip his way every time I got Blackjack (that was the second reason my friend nudged me). It almost caused an argument with the dealers when it was time for a change in croupiers. smirk

However, I still believe to this very day that I wouldn’t have won if I had not tipped the croupier so much. I had uncontested wins (where the dealer doesn’t hit to try and better you) a lot of times when I was the only person who didn’t go bust and I think a lot of that had to do with my generosity.

frankfurt casino blackjack

…and with that last 200 Euro in chips I managed to win 700 Euros. I had already cashed out the 2,000 Euros I won prior to this to avoid the temptation to hit the reserves, and that was the story of how I managed to come back from Germany with more money than I went with. :)

Last Trip to Genting Casino – winners, losers, and the meaning of life

Tears began to roll down his eyes instead of smiles of satisfaction.

I weep, because riches beget enmity and mutual bitterness” – Omar (second Caliph after Prophet Muhammad, after looking gravely at the piles of gold from the spoils of war of conquering Persia)

genting roulette table

The meaning of life not 42. The meaning of life is 6.

I was at the Roulette table last night and my first bet was about RM 1,000 worth of chips spread out over the table.

I thought I had put a RM 100 chip on the number 6.

I didn’t. It was a corner/square bet (covering 4 numbers in the photo above with my RM 50 chip for an 8:1 payout – 5, 6, 8, 9). I did have RM 100 on the number 0 though.

Thus, the amount that I won from that bet didn’t even equal out my RM 2,000 buy-in. I stacked more chips on the second bet and lost.

I did put chips on the number 6 this time but it came out as 16 instead. I didn’t bet on 6 the third time and that was my loss coz that very same number came out again!

Yup, it was 6 – “my number”.

I would have won RM 1,750 after covering my RM 2000 buy-in (total of RM 3,750) if I had gone for that. It’s not a large amount, but I would have left.

Instead, I lost about RM 2,200 and then decided to stop and go get an early dinner.

credit card cash withdrawal charges

I then went into the International Room and withdrew RM 1,000 using my credit card, which incurs an administrative charge from Genting as well as the bank’s 5% charge.

casino de genting bearer chips

I walked to a Baccarat table where there’s a really nice and professional croupier (couldn’t remember her name) – my original intention was to double up until I recouped my losses.

It’s a good thing I didn’t coz I lost on the first round – I had split my bet to RM 500.

I won on the next round, doubled up and then doubled up again. I wanted a sequence of Player, Banker, Banker and that’s exactly what happened.

genting casino malaysia chips

Thus, with my last RM 1,500 bet on Banker I had netted RM 4,000.

four thousand

It’s a technical win since my buy-in was about RM 3,200 + credit card charges. However, I don’t consider it a win. I had to cover my room at Awana (all other hotels were fully booked) which was about RM 250 per person after splitting the cost – the room was about RM 500 (!!!). I also had to cover the trip costs and a celebratory drink at Cloud 9 (live band watering hole with a cover charge of RM 25 for cardholders) after that.

I could have won an additional RM 1,500. I wanted to hit Banker one last time (and even stayed to watch) – it was a natural 8, an automatic win. I didn’t bet though, I told myself I’ll quit after recovering and I did.

rm3

I cashed up after that – I only had RM 3 in my wallet at that point, the rest is the stack of notes from the RM 4,000 cashout.

I immediately banked in RM 2,000 to my credit card account so I wouldn’t get hit that hard by the bank charges (it should cover the RM 1,000 cash out) and went shopping for clothes.

paying credit card

Time from credit card cash withdrawal to payment: Less than 1 hour (much of it spent lining up at the CDM)

It’s a good thing that I went up this weekend – I bought all my clothes from the same store coz it had an additional 30% discount for Genting card holders. I’ve been a Silver member since end of 2007, not too long after I got out of rehab.

I got two pairs of shirts and pants each – I don’t always buy new attire for Chinese New Year, but this time I wanted to.

horrible clothes

I also make it a point to buy one shirt that looks horrible on me each year…but a friend and the sales promoter stopped me. Haha!

I went for the blue version of this instead. It looks much better. I spent about RM 600 on clothes and a new pair of shoes! Technically, this is from my nett winnings. ;)

It was a fun trip – the drinking, the early morning burger run before sleeping and waking up at 9 am to sing impromptu karaoke at the balcony.

I also told myself I’ll stop hitting the casinos after this. I intend to honor it this time.

no easy day

The only easy day was yesterday” – SEAL team mantra

RM 1,000 nett win from Genting

I had RM 500 as my bankroll – that’s as much as I was willing to lose. I won RM 1,500 from the roulette tables. That’s a RM 1,000 nett win but let me tell you about the most unusual sequence of events.

roulette 6

I took this at great personal risk of ejection from the casino. It’s the Roulette table with the number 6 pinned – some of the chips there are mine. I guess they must have seen me on the CCTVs, got a glare from the pit boss, so don’t complain about the quality. It would have been ignominious for me to be escorted out. ;)

I had wanted to bet the entire amount on the number 6. Why?

  • Well, there’s my blog name for one
  • Also, I got a queue number that practically shouts for me to go there
  • I also had a very good feeling about that number even before I came up

I kinda felt that I would win quite a large amount by doing that if I just went at the right time. I went while the others were taking a bath. I like to do this alone actually.

casino chips 500

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the balls to throw down the entire RM 500 on my very strong hunch or else the title would be how I won RM 17,500 from Genting – a good start towards recovering my funds. :x

I put down RM 30 in chips instead and spread the rest around.

I got up to RM 1,670 in the first second I sat down.

Dammit, for not heeding that instinct!!! Oh well.

Anyway, I set aside RM 1,000 (my original target was just a paltry RM 300 win – a far cry from the high rolling days – those are over) and used the RM 670 in chips to play again…which got me down RM 270 before a last minute hedge bet on 7-8 got me back to RM 800.

Yup, that’s a RM 1,300 nett win. I set aside another RM 500 (for RM 1,500) and used the RM 300 for one last shot.

myr1500

Lost all the RM 300 in a single spin (went for 1-18 numbers) and decided it was time to pull out. I had dropped below a 1k win once, and now I got back up and besides I reckon my friends would be done with the shower so I headed up.

Oh yeah, someone once told me that I should stop playing Baccarat, where I’m highly irrational (I go for Player 90% of the time) and suggested I switch to Roulette. Good one, that advice.

I’m quite proud of myself for pulling out with RM 1,500 (of which RM 500 was my initial bankroll e.g. my money) for a RM 1,000 nett win.

It’s not much but it’ll help me with some expenses I’ve been putting off like credit card bills. ‘Tis desperate times, my friends for me to do this. :x

genting magic

Thanks Genting! :)

I just lost RM 12,000 in Genting

I moaned aloud, a textbook cry of anguish. I even managed some respectable gnashing of teeth.

genting casino bearer chips

I wanted to “earn” (insert Chinese gambling cliché joke) RM 2,000 for reasons of my own. It was a stupid thing to do. I went up with RM 4,500 which I converted into RM 4,000 worth of chips. I played Baccarat in the International Room and lost it all in two rounds.

I used the spare RM 500, random bank notes worth RM 250 and withdrew (!!!) RM 5,000 from my credit card with a 5% service charge.

genting international room withdraw credit card

I lost it all on high stakes Baccarat with RM 4,000 minimum per hand. :x

I then went and withdrew another RM 2,000 from the ATM for a last minute save. This makes the total buy-in exactly RM 12,000.

First near save – RM 11,500

I went to the Roulette table and by some fluke managed to win consistently. I hit the single numbers twice with RM 100 which pays RM 3,500 with 35-1 payout.

I found out that the dealer was consistently getting 1-12 with his spins and the numbers 4 and 8 came out several times over 10 spins. My mistake was just putting RM 1,000 on 1-12 and going for the numbers instead. I should have bet higher to get back my money. :x

It didn’t last long coz the pit boss saw the croupier was spinning the same numbers over and over again and switched dealers.

I switched back to Baccarat and lost it all again – it’s very easy when you bet RM 5,000 per hand.

I should have left with a RM 500 loss. It’s A LOT better than losing RM 12,000. I didn’t. This was the best time since I got back up from a RM 12,000 loss to RM 11,500.

Second near save – RM 61,000 (!!!)

I am still fuming over this. I put RM 1,500 on the number 0 (house number) and the dealer went “No more bets” and took my chips away.

I had other chips on line, even, and other configurations so in total I would have won over 61k. The RM 1,500 bet alone would have netted me RM 52,500 with the 35-1 payout.

This would go considerably well for my condo fund. Unfortunately, I put the number 0 last and the bet was not accepted. :(

Third near save – RM 8,500

This is actually more like RM 13,500. I would have nearly achieved my goal of a RM 2,000 win and I would have instantly run off after getting back my RM 12,000 with a RM 1,500 win.

There was a Player dragon going and from just RM 600 I got it up to RM 13,500. However, I die die wanted a RM 14,000 win (RM 2,000 profit) so I slapped down RM 5,000 at the end of the 12 consecutive Player wins in the Baccarat table.

I lost it coz it went to Banker during the 13th deal.

It all went downhill from there. I lost everything except RM 50 I earmarked for the bus home. My dinner is a RM 1.90 bread roll.

Silver lining

I don’t actually spend a lot of money but I’m pretty much flat out broke right now. I know I’ve said this before and I don’t need to convince anyone but I’m not going to gamble again. I managed to quit methamphetamine and other drugs after several relapses so I know what I’m like.

I’m not going to step foot into a casino again. I’m just bummed I disappointed one of my closest friends. Sorry Xinxian.

I could get back the RM 12,000 by doing stuff that’s not very legal (technically downright illegal) but I’m not going to. It’s about consequences. Everything you do has consequences and you must be prepared to face them.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, which surprisingly a lot of people don’t understand. I’ve met a lot of people who has an “I WANT” mentality but is not ready to accept the consequences for it.

I have accepted all the consequences of my actions, and I think I know what’s fundamentally wrong with me – I have a “dead man walking” mentality. I’m going to fix that.

On the plus side, now that I don’t have any money so that would force a lot of circumstances and personal prophecies to be fulfilled so that’s one good thing that came out of it.

I would be a healthier person (not diet wise, I’ll be eating bread and instant noodles for a long time) after I weather this fortune reversal.

RM 1,500 from Genting – thanks!

rebate

I never knew my Genting WorldCard actually holds a cash equivalent that can be cashed out. I lost mine and headed to the casino to replace my WorldCard and managed to redeem 50 Genting Points for RM 50. I decided to try my luck at the Baccarat table…

chips

…and managed to win RM 1,500 thanks to a Player dragon. It was a cold table when I started with my RM 3,000 buy-in and it was packed when I left after RM 4,500 in chips. I was up RM 2,000 for a while before going down to RM 1,000 so I decided to leave satisfied with my RM 1,500 win.

O woe! I lost in Resorts World Sentosa casino, chaos theory and the SGD 400 text message

resorts world sentosa casino

Dammit! I popped out of Universal Studios for a quick smoke (you get a UV chop for reentry) and the casino was just beside it. I had told myself:

DO NOT STEP INTO IT

last night. I passed by it on my way in but never thought about going in. It had an:

ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTERS HERE

large blinking neon sign in my head.

…but I succumbed. *hangs head

I wanted a mere SGD 100 win – just one bet at the Baccarat table – that was how modest I was vs my 5 figure bets last time. I just exchanged SGD 200 for chips.

Thus, I put SGD 100 on a hot table where everyone else had their chips on Player as well, and also on Tie. I had a STRONG URGE to move it to Banker to ruin everyone’s mojo but I didn’t. I also wanted to bet on Tie since in my last sojourn to the casino it came out as a Tie the first time…but I didn’t.

Guess what?

Round 1:
Tie

Remaining chips: SGD 200 (no win or lose)

Round 2:
Banker wins with a fucking natural nine (Ace, 9)
Everyone was still on Player – literally thousands on the Player side and when the Tie came I had an EVEN STRONGER URGE to move my chips to Banker.

This would have ended in a happily ever after story with a small SGD 100 win (my aim) if that had been the case. It wasn’t.

Remaining chips: SGD 100

I moved to another table since there’s this dude exchanging money and I wanted to be fast.

Round 3:
I told myself, don’t let the pitfalls of being attached to Player dictate your bets. I didn’t listen. I bet on Player.
Banker Wins.

Remaining chips: SGD 0

I topped up another SGD 200 for the buy in. Now I have used SGD 400 (about RM 1,000) in the casino and decided to end it once and for all.

Remaining chips: SGD 200 (after another SGD 200 top up for a total of SGD 400)

Round 3:
I put SGD 200 on Player despite it being an obvious Banker dragon (roll) on the table.
Player came out with a 7, which I thought was pretty safe, considering Banker only had a 3.
Banker drew again for an 8.
FML.

Remaining chips: SGD 0 (again)

Considering I only brought SGD 300 over and I lost SGD 400 (which is technically SGD 200 if you recall that I won SGD 200 in Marina Bay Sands casino) I didn’t have any more money to bet since I used some money for topping up taxi fares, drinks at Ku De Ta and a souvenir at Battlestar Galactica.

I think I’m down to SGD 12 or so in my wallet.

I shouldn’t have gone in. I told myself the SGD 200 win at Marina Bay Sands casino was good enough but I went through that door anyway. I lost SGD 400 (about RM 1,000) in the process. It took just 10 minutes to lose that.

It seems that I’m cursed in Genting casinos. :p

I’m totally broke now and it’s all my fault. T_T

Oh well, at least they checked my age to verify that I was above 21. Small consolation. :x

Chaos theory and the SGD 400 text message

You know how chaos theory goes right? Anyway, being broke is no fun, but looking back, if I didn’t lose in the casino, I wouldn’t have gotten a text message from an old friend (13 years since we first met).

It was technically two text messages and a phone call but it totally made my day. I mean, seriously, it’s damn worth it if chaos theory deems that must happen for this to happen. Heh!

Thank you for making my day. You know who you are. I still can’t wipe this stupid grin off my face. smirk

15 minutes in Marina Bay Sands casino = pure win

marina bay sands casino

Now there I was, arriving at Santi at 6:15 pm for the 6:30 pm dinner (tend to be on the early side) when this vista greeted me. I didn’t come to gamble though – I just have SGD 300 (about RM 750) on me so I opened the door the Santi…except it didn’t open. The lady came out and told me that they open their doors at 6:30 pm so I had 15 minutes to kill.

…where else can I go? smirk

I strolled down to the casino and I AM SAD TO REPORT THAT NO ONE BOTHERED CHECKING MY AGE. Has my liver been ravaged by my years of abuse that I look my age again (which is 30, btw)?

Saddened by the fact that they only wanted to see the cover of my passport to verify that I was a foreigner (locals have to pay a fee to enter the casino) I morosely trudged down and went to the nearest Baccarat table.

This was a cold table (meaning it’s empty, no punters playing and you’re the first one to warm the seats and cut the deck) so I sat at the lucky Number 6 spot and exchanged SGD 200 for chips.

…now I’m REALLY BROKE this month (and the next) so this is the MAXIMUM I am willing to wager. I sat down on a minimum SGD 100 bet table so I had to bet with a black SGD 100 chip each time. However, that was the plan anyway, I would have bet that amount even on smaller buy in tables coz I really don’t see the point in putting down SGD 25.

Well, since it was a cold table, the female dealer shuffled the cards while I played with my chips. I wanted to bet on Tie since this baccarat table pays out 8-1 for a tie. However, I am also VERY attached to wagering on Player (a weakness that even 5 figure losses has not been able to remedy) so I put in on Player instead. T_T

Buy in: SGD 200

Dealer says: “Cards facing up or down?”

I say: “All face up, let’s make this quick I need to be somewhere in 15 minutes.”

Round 1:
SGD 100 on Player
Player draws a natural 8
AND BANKER DRAWS AN 8 AS WELL
FML it was a Tie after all. >.<
Chips remaining: SGD 200 (no one wins or loses on straight bets if it’s a tie)

Round 2:
SGD 100 on Player
Player draws a natural 9
I didn’t even have to look at the Banker
WIN SGD 100
Chips remaining: SGD 300

Round 3:
SGD 100 on Player
Player draws King
Banker draws an Jack
Player draws a 3
A THREE!!! WTF!
Banker draws a 5
FML MAX
Player draws ANOTHER FACE CARD – QUEEN! (which means I’m still at 3)
Banker draws…a 6
Heh! Well, that was three straight wins in a row.
BTW, that makes Banker 1, lower than a 3.
Chips remaining: SGD 400 (nett win of SGD 200)

I didn’t even want to bet anymore – three straight wins in a row (or at least no losses) is good enough for me. I wasn’t even at the table for more than 3 minutes, all in all. The rest of the time was spent accidentally walking out and queuing in to come in again and going to the cashier and I was STILL early for dinner – had to wait about 2 minutes.

SGD 200 (around RM 500) is not that much but it covers some of my Singapore expenses and it’ll help with groceries when I’m broke for the next two months. :D

Yes, this is the infamous toilet shot again, coz casinos generally frown upon cameras – you can bring it in but you probably can’t take photos without getting kicked out. Except in Amsterdam.

The Schiphol Snafu

schiphol

Schiphol airport in Amsterdam is one of the few that has an actual casino inside the boarding area. I was flying back to London and decided to spend part of my remaining Euros at the tables since I had nothing better to do.

Well, that and I lost 1,100 pounds in London on video Roulette machines. -_-

holland casino

I just had a buy in of Euro 40 and logic dictates that I put everything on a single number if I wanted to have a chance to win back the loss in London. Unfortunately, logic wasn’t working very well due to one last trip to the coffeeshop before heading to the airport.

I put Euro 5 on the number 29 (my age). I was the only one at the table and was just playing for fun, having partially forgotten the loss. On the very first spin, the ball dropped on…

win

You guessed it. 29. I won Euro 175.

casino chips

Jesus Christ. If I had my wits with me, I would have dropped all Euro 40 on a single number since that’s how I usually bet.

casino win

It would have netted me a cool Euro 1,400 which would have covered all my losses in London. >.<

BTW, this is the first casino I’ve seen that allows photography. :)

How I lost RM 11,100 over a week

genting 1000 chip

A lone RM 1,000 chip

The Signs (TM) were all there. I lost my ATM card so I had to withdraw from my credit card instead. I went up with the sole intention of winning back my Auckland losses (RM 5,000). I was talking about chasing the dragon when I went up but my obstination made me go against it.

Anyway, let’s cut to Auckland Sky City Casino. I actually WON in New Zealand with a paltry NZD 2,000 buy in. I started REALLY badly and was down to about NZD 300 when I chased this Player dragon that netted me a cool NZD 2,100. There I was, with NZD 4,100 of chips which I cashed in and sat for 45 minutes drinking beer while waiting for my friend to finish her game.

auckland sky city casino

I’m not very good with waiting so in the end I started playing again. I was very, very drunk at that point and was just putting money on the Blackjack table, holding with a 6 and other stupid stuff like that. Not surprisingly I lost the NZD 2,100 plus my buy in of NZD 2,000. That’s about a RM 5,000 net loss (not factoring in the win, else it’ll be something close to RM 10,000).

Back to Genting, I just had an urge to head up this weekend, coz I had nothing to do. Thus, I headed up with RM 2,000 (with the intention of withdrawing an additional RM 4,000 from my credit card when I get into the International Room). We were staying in First World Hotel so against my better judgement, I went into that casino first.

There was a Banker dragon going on. I bet 1k on Player (against the dragon) and lost. I bet another 1k on Player (talk about obstinate!) and lost again. That’s the end of my RM 2,000 buy in so I had to head to the main casino. It didn’t help that the Banker dragon was broken RIGHT AFTER THAT with four Players in a row, which, if I had withdrew the cash first, would have made me win.

Thus, down by 2k, I went into the IR and withdrew RM 4,000 in 4 x RM 1,000 chips (shown in the first photo) and sat down on Elite Baccarat. I put 1k on Player as usual and won. However, in Elite Baccarat you have this option to switch and I accidentally switched (wanted to hold) and lost the 1k.

It was a series of unfortunate events which happened really rapidly after that. I was betting with my emotions instead of my analytical skillz. I went Player all the way. After a couple of wins and losses (got a natural 9 once, and a really lucky win of 3 vs 2).

However, at the end of it I was left with a sole 1k chip which I went to the toilet to take a photo of before heading back to the table. While I was away, Player won 3 times. >.<

I lost a total of RM 6,100 (RM 100 was a last ditch attempt for a comeback by putting it on the number 6 on Roulette) and now I have to eat Maggi Mee every single night to save up for my condo. T_T

Things you can buy with RM 11,100:

A nice bed for my new condo
A nice sofa for my new condo
A nice TV for new new condo

Experiences you can buy with RM 11,100:

A trip to pretty much anywhere in the world for a week if you’re careful with accomodation

However, I’m always prepared to lose my buy in when I come up to gamble but things would have worked out so differently if I just followed the Banker dragon in the first place. Oh well, I don’t complain when I win so I don’t complain when I lose too. :)

It’s just life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. My approach to betting is just too risky. A man beside me can absorb the losses coz he bets RM 100 – RM 200 each round. I don’t play for fun. I play to win so I reduce the times I have to play by betting high.

Anyway, I’m going to have to skip Subway and Dominos and cook 2 packets of Maggi with 2 eggs every night from now on. I’m NOT going up to Genting anymore until I purchase my condo.
