firecrackers

I always have my Chinese New Year reunion dinner at my grandma’s place. It’s just our family and my grandma with a few aunts eating some great home cooked food.

I traditionally also let off a string of firecrackers before eating. :)

reunion dinner

I love the hearty Heng Hua dishes that my grandma and aunts cooks – it’s what I ate during my formative years and I’m very fond of chai bo (a preserved vegetable), the sea cucumber + razor clam mix and the pork + chicken stew.

cny 2013 reunion dinner

Here’s everyone! My grandma is the one to my left, my mom is on my right. The chick that looks like me is my sister, who flew off just now headed for New Zealand. My dad is on her right and that’s Kara, my niece, on her left.

I also brought along a Bushmills 10 year old single malt whiskey from Ireland for drinks. Almost finished the bottle, it’s a lot more fun drinking like this.

bushmills single malt

My cousins all came later – this is also a tradition of ours, I’m the banker and we played Blackjack and later a crazy version of Baccarat where there’s no edge to the house (me). My uncle was telling me I was doing it wrong. Haha! I don’t mind, all of my cousins are younger than me and I want them to win.

I lost a few hundred from our gambling session (which I actually have to budget my losses each year coz I do stuff like giving extra payouts for audacity e.g. hitting up to 5 cards and not busting in Blackjack) and everyone went away happy.

Happy CNY everyone! Gong Xi Fatt Chai! :D

genting roulette table

The meaning of life not 42. The meaning of life is 6.

I was at the Roulette table last night and my first bet was about RM 1,000 worth of chips spread out over the table.

I thought I had put a RM 100 chip on the number 6.

I didn’t. It was a corner/square bet (covering 4 numbers in the photo above with my RM 50 chip for an 8:1 payout – 5, 6, 8, 9). I did have RM 100 on the number 0 though.

Thus, the amount that I won from that bet didn’t even equal out my RM 2,000 buy-in. I stacked more chips on the second bet and lost.

I did put chips on the number 6 this time but it came out as 16 instead. I didn’t bet on 6 the third time and that was my loss coz that very same number came out again!

Yup, it was 6 – “my number”.

I would have won RM 1,750 after covering my RM 2000 buy-in (total of RM 3,750) if I had gone for that. It’s not a large amount, but I would have left.

Instead, I lost about RM 2,200 and then decided to stop and go get an early dinner.

credit card cash withdrawal charges

I then went into the International Room and withdrew RM 1,000 using my credit card, which incurs an administrative charge from Genting as well as the bank’s 5% charge.

casino de genting bearer chips

I walked to a Baccarat table where there’s a really nice and professional croupier (couldn’t remember her name) – my original intention was to double up until I recouped my losses.

It’s a good thing I didn’t coz I lost on the first round – I had split my bet to RM 500.

I won on the next round, doubled up and then doubled up again. I wanted a sequence of Player, Banker, Banker and that’s exactly what happened.

genting casino malaysia chips

Thus, with my last RM 1,500 bet on Banker I had netted RM 4,000.

four thousand

It’s a technical win since my buy-in was about RM 3,200 + credit card charges. However, I don’t consider it a win. I had to cover my room at Awana (all other hotels were fully booked) which was about RM 250 per person after splitting the cost – the room was about RM 500 (!!!). I also had to cover the trip costs and a celebratory drink at Cloud 9 (live band watering hole with a cover charge of RM 25 for cardholders) after that.

I could have won an additional RM 1,500. I wanted to hit Banker one last time (and even stayed to watch) – it was a natural 8, an automatic win. I didn’t bet though, I told myself I’ll quit after recovering and I did.

rm3

I cashed up after that – I only had RM 3 in my wallet at that point, the rest is the stack of notes from the RM 4,000 cashout.

I immediately banked in RM 2,000 to my credit card account so I wouldn’t get hit that hard by the bank charges (it should cover the RM 1,000 cash out) and went shopping for clothes.

paying credit card

Time from credit card cash withdrawal to payment: Less than 1 hour (much of it spent lining up at the CDM)

It’s a good thing that I went up this weekend – I bought all my clothes from the same store coz it had an additional 30% discount for Genting card holders. I’ve been a Silver member since end of 2007, not too long after I got out of rehab.

I got two pairs of shirts and pants each – I don’t always buy new attire for Chinese New Year, but this time I wanted to.

horrible clothes

I also make it a point to buy one shirt that looks horrible on me each year…but a friend and the sales promoter stopped me. Haha!

I went for the blue version of this instead. It looks much better. I spent about RM 600 on clothes and a new pair of shoes! Technically, this is from my nett winnings. ;)

It was a fun trip – the drinking, the early morning burger run before sleeping and waking up at 9 am to sing impromptu karaoke at the balcony.

I also told myself I’ll stop hitting the casinos after this. I intend to honor it this time.

magnum 4d win
THIS IS A WINNING TICKET

I had a feeling that I was going to get lucky yesterday so I went to the SS2 Magnum 4D outlet where I usually have my lunch and got some lottery tickets. I checked at night during dinner and thought I didn’t win but when I went back home and looked at the ticket – it was indeed a winning number! :)

lottery winnings

My number is 8179

I have *never* won Magnum 4D before.

winning lottery ticket

It came out as a Special Prize (RM 180) and I bought RM 3 of that number so I thought I won around RM 600 as I posted it up on the sixthseal.com Facebook page last night.

jackpot winnings

I just cashed it in and it seems like the Jackpot 4 prize is much larger than I thought. I read it was just RM 68 but when the payout ticket came out it’s RM 68 (Jackpot 4 bonus) x RM 2 (Jackpot minimum bet) x RM 3 (amount bet) = RM 408.

total 4d winnings

Thus RM 540 (RM 180 Special Prize) + RM 408 (Jackpot bonus) = RM 948.

8179 is a concatenation of a family number: 19(81) + 19(79).

The first is my year of birth and the other is the year my only other sibling – my sister – was born.

It’s a small win but I’m quite happy coz I’ve successfully beaten the insane odds. I’ve also had a winning Sports Toto ticket before and stopped buying after that.

winning face

Here’s a cheesy shot of me in recognition of the original one from 2006. (see the Sports Toto link from my post back then)

I had hoped to win a couple million from the Jackpot and send my mom and dad for a vacation to the States or Europe and get my mom better treatment but there are no shortcuts in life.

claim 4d

I am officially stopping any further bets from Magnum 4D since I just want to buck the odds. I used to occasionally get the tickets but seriously, the odds are just not there. I’m glad I finally beat it. It’s not much but it’s a bonus Chinese New Year ang pow. :)

I had RM 500 as my bankroll – that’s as much as I was willing to lose. I won RM 1,500 from the roulette tables. That’s a RM 1,000 nett win but let me tell you about the most unusual sequence of events.

roulette 6

I took this at great personal risk of ejection from the casino. It’s the Roulette table with the number 6 pinned – some of the chips there are mine. I guess they must have seen me on the CCTVs, got a glare from the pit boss, so don’t complain about the quality. It would have been ignominious for me to be escorted out. ;)

I had wanted to bet the entire amount on the number 6. Why?

  • Well, there’s my blog name for one
  • Also, I got a queue number that practically shouts for me to go there
  • I also had a very good feeling about that number even before I came up

I kinda felt that I would win quite a large amount by doing that if I just went at the right time. I went while the others were taking a bath. I like to do this alone actually.

casino chips 500

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the balls to throw down the entire RM 500 on my very strong hunch or else the title would be how I won RM 17,500 from Genting – a good start towards recovering my funds. :x

I put down RM 30 in chips instead and spread the rest around.

I got up to RM 1,670 in the first second I sat down.

Dammit, for not heeding that instinct!!! Oh well.

Anyway, I set aside RM 1,000 (my original target was just a paltry RM 300 win – a far cry from the high rolling days – those are over) and used the RM 670 in chips to play again…which got me down RM 270 before a last minute hedge bet on 7-8 got me back to RM 800.

Yup, that’s a RM 1,300 nett win. I set aside another RM 500 (for RM 1,500) and used the RM 300 for one last shot.

myr1500

Lost all the RM 300 in a single spin (went for 1-18 numbers) and decided it was time to pull out. I had dropped below a 1k win once, and now I got back up and besides I reckon my friends would be done with the shower so I headed up.

Oh yeah, someone once told me that I should stop playing Baccarat, where I’m highly irrational (I go for Player 90% of the time) and suggested I switch to Roulette. Good one, that advice.

I’m quite proud of myself for pulling out with RM 1,500 (of which RM 500 was my initial bankroll e.g. my money) for a RM 1,000 nett win.

It’s not much but it’ll help me with some expenses I’ve been putting off like credit card bills. ‘Tis desperate times, my friends for me to do this. :x

Thanks Genting! :)

singapore pools

Heh! I did this during my first trip to Singapore to see my mom, there’s a supermarket near my sister’s place that has an outlet for legalized state betting *right inside*, of particular interest being football and motorsports.

This is different from the common lotteries that most countries have, with much lower odds compared to online betting sites as a form of taxation.

singapore football betting

It was the start of BPL and I bought SGD 10 for West Ham to win at 2.10 odds. I won this one, getting me SGD 11 nett (after deducting the original SGD 10 – the total winnings was SGD 21).

It’s basically winning a pack of smokes, just did it for fun.

sports betting singapore

I went for a random K-League match after collecting my winnings the next day while grocery shopping, also with a SGD 10 bet for a return of SGD 28.50.

There are various permutations possible – total goals, HT/FT, etc with corresponding odds (highest I’ve seen is 300 – which will net you SGD 3,000 with SGD 10). The minimum bet is SGD 5.

I lost this one, and stopped playing – the queue was wayyyyy too long and I just wanted to see how Singapore Pools works.

singapore dollars

…and that is how I won SGD 1 in Singapore. :)

I moaned aloud, a textbook cry of anguish. I even managed some respectable gnashing of teeth.

genting casino bearer chips

I wanted to “earn” (insert Chinese gambling cliché joke) RM 2,000 for reasons of my own. It was a stupid thing to do. I went up with RM 4,500 which I converted into RM 4,000 worth of chips. I played Baccarat in the International Room and lost it all in two rounds.

I used the spare RM 500, random bank notes worth RM 250 and withdrew (!!!) RM 5,000 from my credit card with a 5% service charge.

genting international room withdraw credit card

I lost it all on high stakes Baccarat with RM 4,000 minimum per hand. :x

I then went and withdrew another RM 2,000 from the ATM for a last minute save. This makes the total buy-in exactly RM 12,000.

First near save – RM 11,500

I went to the Roulette table and by some fluke managed to win consistently. I hit the single numbers twice with RM 100 which pays RM 3,500 with 35-1 payout.

I found out that the dealer was consistently getting 1-12 with his spins and the numbers 4 and 8 came out several times over 10 spins. My mistake was just putting RM 1,000 on 1-12 and going for the numbers instead. I should have bet higher to get back my money. :x

It didn’t last long coz the pit boss saw the croupier was spinning the same numbers over and over again and switched dealers.

I switched back to Baccarat and lost it all again – it’s very easy when you bet RM 5,000 per hand.

I should have left with a RM 500 loss. It’s A LOT better than losing RM 12,000. I didn’t. This was the best time since I got back up from a RM 12,000 loss to RM 11,500.

Second near save – RM 61,000 (!!!)

I am still fuming over this. I put RM 1,500 on the number 0 (house number) and the dealer went “No more bets” and took my chips away.

I had other chips on line, even, and other configurations so in total I would have won over 61k. The RM 1,500 bet alone would have netted me RM 52,500 with the 35-1 payout.

This would go considerably well for my condo fund. Unfortunately, I put the number 0 last and the bet was not accepted. :(

Third near save – RM 8,500

This is actually more like RM 13,500. I would have nearly achieved my goal of a RM 2,000 win and I would have instantly run off after getting back my RM 12,000 with a RM 1,500 win.

There was a Player dragon going and from just RM 600 I got it up to RM 13,500. However, I die die wanted a RM 14,000 win (RM 2,000 profit) so I slapped down RM 5,000 at the end of the 12 consecutive Player wins in the Baccarat table.

I lost it coz it went to Banker during the 13th deal.

It all went downhill from there. I lost everything except RM 50 I earmarked for the bus home. My dinner is a RM 1.90 bread roll.

Silver lining

I don’t actually spend a lot of money but I’m pretty much flat out broke right now. I know I’ve said this before and I don’t need to convince anyone but I’m not going to gamble again. I managed to quit methamphetamine and other drugs after several relapses so I know what I’m like.

I’m not going to step foot into a casino again. I’m just bummed I disappointed one of my closest friends. Sorry Xinxian.

I could get back the RM 12,000 by doing stuff that’s not very legal (technically downright illegal) but I’m not going to. It’s about consequences. Everything you do has consequences and you must be prepared to face them.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, which surprisingly a lot of people don’t understand. I’ve met a lot of people who has an “I WANT” mentality but is not ready to accept the consequences for it.

I have accepted all the consequences of my actions, and I think I know what’s fundamentally wrong with me – I have a “dead man walking” mentality. I’m going to fix that.

On the plus side, now that I don’t have any money so that would force a lot of circumstances and personal prophecies to be fulfilled so that’s one good thing that came out of it.

I would be a healthier person (not diet wise, I’ll be eating bread and instant noodles for a long time) after I weather this fortune reversal.

rebate

I never knew my Genting WorldCard actually holds a cash equivalent that can be cashed out. I lost mine and headed to the casino to replace my WorldCard and managed to redeem 50 Genting Points for RM 50. I decided to try my luck at the Baccarat table…

chips

…and managed to win RM 1,500 thanks to a Player dragon. It was a cold table when I started with my RM 3,000 buy-in and it was packed when I left after RM 4,500 in chips. I was up RM 2,000 for a while before going down to RM 1,000 so I decided to leave satisfied with my RM 1,500 win.

blackjack

It has become a tradition that we have dinner at my grandma’s place on Chinese New Year eve before everyone plays blackjack. My uncles used to be the dealers when I was a kid but as that generation passed on, I’ve become the dealer and all my cousins come over to my grandma’s house to play.

stack of money

It’s small stakes only, just to pass the time until about 11 pm before I get ready to let off the firecrackers and fireworks. Thus, I ended up with this stack of 100 x RM 1 bills. I exchanged RM 100 for this and it’s in mint condition and still has the band on it.

serial number

You can see the start of the serial number – ACJ7895101

rm1

…up to ACJ7895200 – exactly 100 pieces of RM 1 notes.

cny gambling

I also had a special jackpot giveaway where you can automatically win RM 20 from the dealer (that would be me) if you get “2012” e.g. three cards – two 2′s and a 10. It’s all for fun, just money changing hands.

I only realized I’m up by RM 13 when I went to exchange the notes for proper ones.

hong kong jockey club

Betting is legal in Hong Kong for certain sports like horse racing (not sure if this qualifies as a “sport” per se) and football. I passed by The Hong Kong Jockey Club with barely a look at it. I wasn’t really interested but my ex wanted to check out horse racing…

…which is apparently a religion here.

I got some tickets and saw there was a Manchester City football match going on. It was halfway though and I decided to put some moolah on it.

You can actually place your bets mid-game in Hong Kong. The odds change accordingly but you can still wager on a variety of situations. I couldn’t read a single word of Chinese and my ex didn’t know football so the people at The Hong Kong Jockey Club helped me to place my bets.

betting in hong kong

I went for score forecast and wanted HKD 200 (RM 83) on 1-0 to Manchester City (which is the current score) and another HKD 200 on 2-0.

The payout for 1-0 was 1.90 and it’s a staggering 3.05 for 2-0. Pretty fucking good odds considering they’re the home team and they’re already up 1 goal.

We went for dinner and headed back to check the final score. It was 2-0 to Manchester City.

That means you’ll get HKD 610 (about RM 254) for a HKD 200 bet.

Now, if the betting slips are correct and I managed to convey my wishes without the significant language barrier, I would have won HKD 200 (about RM 87), after deducting the loss of the bet placed on 1-0.

hkd20

Unfortunately, the stub for 2-0 was HKD 20 instead of HKD 200. It was missing that all important additional 0.

I wasn’t familiar with the currency so I didn’t check the change I got back when I handed over a HKD 1,000 bill (which is apparently very out of vogue due to counterfeiting concerns). I also neglected to check the betting slips.

FML, I ended up winning HKD 61 instead, from the HKD 20 bet. That means I had a NETT LOSS of HKD 159 (RM 66) when you take into account the HKD 200 I slapped down for 1-0.

Oh well, it was all in good fun. I’m not going back again. I just wanted the experience of betting in Hong Kong.

football betting hong kong

I still wish the communication mistake didn’t occur though. I’ll have won HKD 200 (RM 87) instead of losing HKD 159 (RM 66), which would nearly be enough…

…to take a cab to the airport. smirk

Seriously, cabs here are expensive. I just got back from Lan Kwai Fong early this morning for about HKD 120 in a taxi.

Okay, check this out! I was pretty impressed by this music video made by The Promise. They based it on this post of mine. It’s basically a satire/parody thing that they’re doing for bloggers. I like how they customize each of their videos to the personalities of the blogger.

The Promise is a band that’s trying to raise awareness of the safety of online shopping. Surf over to the We Promise You site for more details.

I have to say, it’s a great initiative by both The Promise and Text100 Malaysia. I’ve always thought Text100 was one of the best PR companies I’ve ever seen and here’s an example of it – they actually make the video before contacting you and asking you for permission to post on the site. Now that’s initiative – actually doing stuff instead of calculating ROIs and all that. It’s the only way to go for the digital front. :)

The video is hilarious, check it out! Heh!
