Sri Shan Curry & Such review

sri shan curry and such

Sri Shan Curry & Such is an eating establishment offering “authentic rich aromatic Southern Indian cuisine” that opened its doors recently. There aren’t a lot of authentic South Indian food in Kuching so I went with *x to check out the place. She was buying lunch.

sri shan decor

Sri Shan Curry & Such is located at Jalan Ban Hock and has interesting dΓ©cor at the open entrance which looks like a cross between an elephant and Bigfoot. Sri Shan Curry & Such is a large establishment that spans two shop lots and there are ample seating arrangements.

sri shan vegetarian

There are vegetarian options for the ones who practice vegetarianism…

sri shan meat

…and meat for the rest of us normal people. πŸ˜‰

sri shan chicken

This is ayam kurma (chicken cooked South Indian style) which goes for RM 5.

sri shan lamb

This is kambing paratal (lamb cooked in a sweet and spicy sauce) which goes for RM 6.

sri shan veggies

She also ordered deep fried vegetables at RM 1.50.

sri shan saffron rice

The food comes with saffron rice (RM 6) and a cracker.

sri shan dhal

We also ordered some dhal (free) to go with the saffron rice.

sri shan meal

It was a great meal, and I really liked the lamb. The total damage came up to RM 22 inclusive of drinks which *x says is overpriced compared to another authentic Indian cuisine outlet.

Street food in Bangkok

street food stall

I woke up this morning and walked around during peak office hours to get some food. I wanted to check out the street food by the roadside (it’s kinda like a moving hawker stall) so I ended up going to this noodle place that a lot of Thai people were at so I assume it must be good.

street food noodle girl

The friendly girl manning the noodle stall didn’t speak much English but I managed to point at a dish that most of the people there are eating. It’s a noodle dish soup with a choice of original, round or green noodles and I chose the original one.

street food water

The tables are arranged around the hawker stall and plastic stools are available for patrons to sit on. I was a bit puzzled when a little boy handed me a tin cup filled with ice until he motioned to the water containers on the table (complimentary). Iced water! Sweet.

street food noodle

This is what the noodle dish (40 baht – around RM 4) looks like – it had more ingredients than noodles. There are pork slices, pork balls, pork dumplings (they sure love their pork over here) and another kind of smaller pork dumplings at the bottom covered by wiggly noodles and vegetables in soup. It tastes surprisingly good, it’s different from the noodle offerings back home.

street food juice

I went to get some drinks after that and noticed a street hawker doing brisk business selling fresh, chilled local mandarin orange juice (20 baht – around RM 2). I saw a lot of people patronizing the stall so I deduced it must be good if local Thai office people were ordering it. The man at the stall is real friendly too and showed me how it’s done.

The local mandarin juice is really good – cold and refreshing after the hot soup meal. Check out the street food when you’re in Bangkok, it’s interesting.

The Weet-Bix guide to constipation relief

weet bix cereal

Weet-Bix is an Australian cereal that comes in the form of unsweetened 97% whole grain biscuits. I used to hate the stuff when I was a kid, but strangely enough, love it to bits now. I can eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I suggest you do the same to combat opiate induced constipation.

weet bix cereal prep

The Weet-Bix guide to constipation can resolve any constipation problems after a couple of days on this diet. You will require:

1. Weet-Bix cereal
2. Fresh milk
3. Swiss muesli (optional)

Preparation:

weet bix cereal biscuits

1. Use a large cereal bowl and fill it up with four (4) Weet-Bix biscuits

weet bix cereal muesli

2. Pour Swiss muesli over it until cereal bowl is nearly full

weet bix cereal layer

3. Take two (2) more Weet-Bix biscuits and layer it on top

weet bix cereal milk

4. Fill bowl with fresh milk

weet bix cereal done

The Swiss muesli I use has dried fruits, nuts, oats and bran and is “an excellent source of fiber”. I layer it with the Weet-Bix for taste and texture (the fruits adds natural sweetness and the oats and nuts gives it the texture) as well as giving the mixture additional fiber.

weet bix cereal end

The amount of fresh milk to add is to taste – add more if you like wet mushy cereal, add less if you like oatmeal consistency cereal. Soy milk can be substituted on a 1:1 ratio with milk for a more watery consistency.

It really is an excellent source of fiber (and it’s delicious too). You should be able to resolve any opiate induced constipation problems after several days on the Weet-Bix muesli diet. πŸ™‚

Inaba Light Tuna Flake

inaba tuna flake

Inaba Light Tuna Flake is a white tuna flake blend from Japan. It retails for RM 5.90 and comes in a nice rounded flat can containing 85 grams of tuna in a “non-oil blend”. I got it in KL and meant for it to be a snack but didn’t actually get around to eating it, and it somehow ended up together with my PS2. *shrugs*

inaba tuna flake can

I saw the bright red and white can when I was leaving for work just now and brought it to the office for…breakfast! I like the nice clean kanji writing (or is that hiragana?) and the shiny tin. I apologize for the lack of eloquence in this post as I didn’t sleep at all last night.

inaba tuna flake front

Inaba Light Tuna Flake has an easy to open flip up mechanism that does away with any need for can openers or other inconveniences along the same vein. πŸ˜‰

inaba tuna flake open

The can opens up to reveal white tune flakes in brine (that’s the “non-oil blend” they were referring to). There are some nice large chunks of tuna in Ibana Light Tuna Flake too.

inaba tuna flake fork

It’s a good thing there are plastic forks in the office (refer to above comment about doing away with inconveniences) so I ate it straight from the can.

Ibaba Light Tuna Flake tastes good. It’s not too salty from the brine and the tuna taste is well retained for a canned item.

Dutch Lady 0% Fat Drinking Yoghurt – Peach Passion

dutch lady yoghurt drink jusco

Dutch Lady came out with a new 0% Fat drinking yoghurt with real fruit juice. I saw it on the dairy section of Jusco in Mid Valley Megamall in KL and decided to get one to drink.

dutch lady yoghurt drink car

Dutch Lady 0% Fat Peach Passion drinking yoghurt touts itself as having “25% less calories than other low fat yoghurt drinks”. That’s a lot of percentage figures being thrown around…

dutch lady yoghurt drink

It tastes good, which surprised me, since I’m not a big fan of low fat drinks – it’s liquid breakfast on the go! πŸ˜‰

Shepherd's Pie

shepherd pie

Shepherd’s Pie is traditional British dish that consists of a bottom layer of minced (ground) lamb in gravy covered with mashed potato and (often) a layer of cheese. (from Wikipedia)

penny shepherds pie

This is Penny’s version of the Shepherd’s Pie – it consists of ground beef, mushrooms, carrots, green peas and the killer ingredient – onions. I strongly belief that good Shepherd’s Pie should contain onion. Onions are great!

shepherds pie

She brought it to work (said she’s make some for me) and I ate it for lunch. The recipe she uses consists of herbs and cheese mixed into the mashed potato. It works…and it’s delicious when it’s still piping hot.

Who there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch? πŸ˜‰

Waffles with butter and honey

fb waffles

I had the best waffles with butter and honey (which is available at most ice cream attachments e.g. the defunct Frostee Boy to SugarBun outlets) while I was in Sibu. SugarBun seriously has the best waffles in town – I don’t know if it’s nostalgia (used to eat heaps of it during my youth) but it’s good.

fb banana split

It goes best with a banana split (which has degraded in quality but at least it doesn’t come with stock vanilla ice cream, but flavors of your choice now).

fb peach paradise

The Peach Paradise is a great sundae as well…can’t beat canned peaches when you’re craving for sugar. πŸ™‚

FF Tom Yam Shrimp instant noodles in a plastic bowl

ff noodles shelves

FF Tom Yam Shrimp flavored instant noodles is a product of Thailand. The unique packaging displayed on the shelves caught my attention since it doesn’t come in the disposable Styrofoam containers that ramen usually comes in, but a solid boxy plastic container.

ff noodles office

FF Tom Yam Shrimp flavored instant noodles retails for RM 2.80 each and the container can be best described as a solid plastic bowl with rounded edges. It looks more like a box than a bowl and the entire package is sealed. The raised round bowl type protrusion on both sides of the ramen box serves the same purpose as a bowl – to provide stability.

ff noodles open

The disposable plastic bowl of FF Tom Yam Shrimp instant noodles opens up to reveal individually wrapped packets of noodles, freeze dried vegetables, a small sachet of oil and a foil sealed pack of Mei Mei flavoring. It also comes with a fork which is a Good Thing (TM). I have much love for manufacturers of ramen who bothers to include a fork inside the pack.

ff noodles add

This is what it looks like after I opened up the noodles and poured in the powdered flavor sachet, the freeze dried vegetables and the small packet of oil. I had it for breakfast today since we have hot water at our office and I chanced upon this box of instant noodles which I brought to the office and forgot all about. The use by date is 2007 so I reckon it’s still alright, even though it’s been there for months.

ff noodles hot water

I filled up the plastic bowl with hot water from the water cooler (yes, water coolers dispense hot water as well) to the indicated line and closed the lid to wait out the designated 3 minute waiting time for it to simmer the way instant noodles does best with the enclosed package holding in the steam from the hot water.

ff noodles simmer

I found that the solid plastic bowl design makes it cook faster since the lid is heavy and thoroughly enclosed the bowl compared to the more common Styrofoam containers with a foil lid which is resealed. The resealing process in the standard Styrofoam type instant noodles compromises the structural integrity and a weight is usually necessary to ensure that steam does not escape.

ff noodles done

The FF Tom Yam Shrimp instant noodles design with the “total enclosure” plastic bowl lid is heavy enough to prevent heat and steam from escaping…providing you with a more evenly cooked instant noodle which tastes delicious!

…and did I mention that I love a disposable plastic fork in my noodles?

Homemade spaghetti at the office

penny spaghetti

I got breakfast free today thanks to Penny, our admin assistant. She brought (still warm!) spaghetti that she made at home to work today.

penny spaghetti topping

She even had the hindsight to bring along a disposable fork. πŸ˜‰ The spaghetti filled the entire container and is topped off with a sauce containing a mixture of beef, carrots, onions and mushrooms all diced up finely.

penny spaghetti macro

It tastes great – the pasta was cooked al dente and best of all it was still warm. The portion is a bit huge though…nearly sent me into a post-breakfast coma. πŸ˜‰
