dooF

This blog went thru a period when the posts were very food-centric.
πŸ™‚ This was a trait that jumped transmission media from email to blogs.
I used to pad my emails with what I had for lunch/dinner/whatever and
this also started appearing in my blog when I couldn’t think of
anything to write. Easiest thing in the world, go out with a digicam,
snap your lunch or dinner, and voila – there’s a post to meet your
daily quota. =D This daily thing is something I commit to, because I’ll
like to remember what I did on a certain day, even if it’s nothing.

ragincaj.jpg

Well, here’s another one for old times sake, what with the first anniversary and everything. This is the Ragin’ Cajun burger
[mcdonalds.com.au] (scroll down a bit), it’s part of McDonald’s New
Tastes Menu which changes every once in a while. I had this for lunch
today. Now usually, the things on the New Tastes Menu are rather
dismal, but not this…this is actually good. Spicy and nice. They are
having a free size-up promotion on the drink if you’re ordering the
Ragin’ Cajun meal with french fries and drinks. This means that when
you order the large meal, the drink becomes huge. Obscenely so. I don’t
know if you can tell from the picture, but it’s much bigger than the
normal large drink. They don’t even normally have it in this size.

flaknoir.jpg

And while we’re on the topic of food, here’s the Flake Noir.
Cadbury’s Flake with dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. It says
“New” but now that I think of it, I distinctly remember having this
last year. Damn those marketing people…taking advantage of my dismal
memory and making me buy stuff that’s not new after all. πŸ˜‰

Spot the difference!

I woke up today feeling depressed for no particular reason. Just
didn’t feel like doing much, and was feeling drained from the last
couple of days. I needed a haircut really badly, so I went down to
Clayton but there was a lot of people and I didn’t feel like waiting so
I just grabbed some lunch and came back. I saw this advertisement at
the bus loop that really cheered me up though. Heh. Funny, this one.

otradead.jpg
It’s against sunlight, so it’s not a very good picture. It shows the
dad interestedly reading an “Options Trading” book as a bedtime story
while his kid looks bored

Well, went back to Clayton again later in the afternoon to get some
groceries with a friend. This was what I was talking about before.

bilomess.jpg
Deli meat and cheese aisle – what can you spot that shouldn’t be there? There are 8 out of place items in the picture.

Heaps of stuff are being left at the wrong aisles and it just seems
a bit disorganized. Anyway, I got some bananas so all would be good
tomorrow. Heh. Placebo or not, it tastes good anyway. Actually, I’m
feeling okay now, just had an introspective moment last night and it
gave me a lot to ponder about life, the universe and everything. Don’t
ask. πŸ˜‰

Wednesday

I enjoyed my tutorial today. Where else can you surf websites as
tutorial exercises? Heh. It’s a first year subject I took because I’m
still eligible to take those since I took mostly 3rd year subjects in
my second and third year. πŸ™‚ There’s an assignment due in 2 weeks but
that’s an easy one…could probably finish it in one night. This is a 9
am class, but it’s not that bad, coz it’s held in Clayton. I live at
the halls of residence in Clayton so it’s just a couple of minutes
walk. I’m glad I took two Clayton subjects this semester. The other two
are Caulfield ones so the commute takes much longer. My faculty is
based in Caulfield though.

choxbunf.jpg

Well, Easter break is coming along soon and that’s a one week
holiday for us. I’ve seen a lot of chocolate Easter eggs of all shapes
and sizes, including huge ass 1 kg ones. However, I’ve never seen these
before. Cadbury’s Hot Cross Marshmallow Buns! I also picked up some
liquorish. I love that stuff, though not many people do because it’s
one of those things you either love or hate.

choxbuni.jpg

Anyway, I finally deleted my domain from the previous host coz it
was causing problems within the Monash network. I live at halls so that
affects me. I won’t go into the technical details but the way the DNS
server at halls assigns serial numbers makes it think my old host is
the newest entry instead of my new host. It’s been 6 days so my new
name server has probably propagated to even Afghanistan so deleting the
old one shouldn’t be a problem.

Well, migrating Movable Type to the new host was not as easy as I
thought. The database dump managed to load, but logging in gave me an
error. I tried dropping the mt_permissions table and it worked, but
then I lost my user name association with my blog. I tried running some
SQL statements, but nothing worked, so I had to import it using Movable
Type’s import system. What this means is that the pages are renumbered
so all the internal links are messed up. I’ll fix that this weekend.

yumduck.jpg

Hmm…should I eat Indomie tonight or Yum Yum? I used to eat a lot of
this stuff back when I was studying in Christchurch, NZ. I only like
the duck flavored ones, it’s really good and quite spicy so if you see
it around, give it a try. I only saw this in Melbourne a couple of
weeks ago and was happy to find it. Ah…nostalgia. πŸ™‚

Week long food

weekfood.jpg

I’m going to sleep after I eat this. I don’t know if it’s still
edible but I’m going to eat it anyway coz I haven’t had anything for
the whole day. πŸ™‚ I bought this rice box ONE WEEK ago and forgot about
it. I left it in the fridge though, so I guess it’s still edible. I
think. Gonna microwave it now and see. Heh.

Do tell me if you happen to see any dead links or missing pictures on the site. Thanks! πŸ™‚

Bi-Lo in disarray

I went out this afternoon for some grocery shopping and also to hunt
down the remaining ice creams in The Sixties Nine collection with
Adrian. It seems that the line is not available in the big grocery
chains like Coles or Bi-Lo but only in small convenience stores and the
stores in petrol stations. Not only that, it also seems that each store
has only part of the lineup so you have to hunt around a bit to get the
whole series. I’ve gotten 8 of them so far (picked up Jami Hendrix
today), and there’s only one last one to finish my collection. πŸ™‚

oxkidney.jpg

Well, saw something interesting in the meat section of Bi-Lo today. Nice and lumpy ox kidneys.

It also seems that Bi-Lo (Clayton) is doing some heavy staff
pruning. Only two checkout counters are open, the deli section doesn’t
have a dedicated sales person, and there are heaps of weird stuff in
the aisles! You know how people take something and then decided they
don’t want it and conveniently put it out of order at any aisle they’re
currently in? Yeah, there’s heaps of that going around. Juice in the
detergent aisle and stuff like that. I also saw:

An empty wrapper of crisps beside a box of Special K.
A half empty McDonald’s soft drink cup in the sauces aisle.
A 6 pack of pies that someone had poked their fingers through the packaging and even one of the pies, revealing the meat inside.
An eaten yogurt cup in the dairy food section.

Tsk…I was under the impression that the Bi-Lo in Clayton is about to go under.

Anyway, what is up with all the calling cards? Indo Card, Go
Bananas, GPS and several others can’t be used to call Malaysia for the
past few days! Today is the third day I’ve been unable to call out. I’m
not the only one either, everyone using the cards couldn’t call
Malaysia. The error message is always either “The number you have
called is disconnected” or “The overseas network is currently down”. I
tried calling Telstra customer services at 1221 and they said their
cards were fine, so I’m gonna get a Say G’Day one tomorrow. Sheesh, wtf
is up with all the other cards…

Ba Kua

bakuamel.jpg

This is the first time I’ve ever seen ba kua (rou kang) in
Melbourne! It’s at a small store at the south entrance of Springvale
Shopping Center. Guess how much a slice costs? A$2.50! Personally, I
haven’t seen ba kua going for RM5 in Malaysia so that sounds steep to
me. It’s pretty good though.

Do you feed your cat yogurt for breakfast?

petyog.jpg

Apparently, there is a specially formulated yogurt meant for pets. I
took this photo at the local Coles pet food department. It’s yogurt.
For cats and dogs.

azngro.jpg

I went to the Asian grocery with Adrian today to get some instant
noodles, fishballs, beef balls, prawns, and crab sticks (love that
stuff). It’s an easy meal if you chuck a bit of everything into a rice
cooker and cook it. That way, you only have one thing to wash (the rice
cooker bowl) although it won’t taste as good.

Mysterious Mysteries

mysalley.jpg

Look! A mysterious alley!

I spent most of the day in uni today. I went in the morning to meet
up with my group mates. We were supposed to get together and practice
for a presentation at 2:30 pm. At least, everyone in the group thought
it was 2:30 pm. After careful perusal of the IE website, it was
discovered that the time we were meant to do the presentation was 4 pm!
This of course led to much grumbling over lost sleep. πŸ™‚ A good deal of
finger pointing was made, but we could not isolate the person who
started the “2:30 pm” meme.

Anyway, we ended up spending most of the time fixing some minor
issues with the code anyway. It was 3:30 pm before we all went to have
lunch at Pot Luck and I think I’m feeling slightly uncomfortable
because I can’t actually eat very fast without indigestion. The
presentation went okay, and I just got back from campus because we had
to install our code into the actual server after that.

cocopop.jpg

Well, I didn’t feel like eating anything for dinner, so I picked up
a box of Coco Pops. Kellogg’s always has some kind of promotion going
on with their cereals. A couple of weeks ago they were attaching the
full version of Age of Empires (the first one) to one of their cereals.
I didn’t get it though because it was one of the unholy “healthy”
cereals. I think it was Chex or something. I only go for the good stuff
like Froot Loops and Coco Pops. πŸ™‚

Anyway, the 3 inch CD inside the Coco Pops box had a game called
“Raging River Rapids” (gotta love alliteration) which features Coco the
monkey trying to navigate a river with three logs strung together. The
logs look strangely unappetizing and conjured up images of a non-food
nature. There was also a comic, wallpapers, cursors etc. The standard
Flash stuff.

Oh, and that alley is the one beside the Huntingdale train station.
I liked the play of light and shadows…nah, I’m being pretentious. I was
just attracted by the pretty colors of the masonry to the left of the
alley. Man, I’m talking so much shit today.

“Oi, Amoy!”

amoy.jpg

Amoy. It sounds like the generic term for young females that people
of my hometown use, particularly when summoning waitresses. πŸ™‚ I don’t
know the origin of the term but I think it could be Hokkien. There’s
also a Foochow counterpart – ah mui yang. I’m Heng Hua, but I don’t
know what the Heng Hua equivalent is. I can understand the language but
the only phrase I know is “hiaw eh”. It’s a very versatile exclamation
that can be used for practically anything. Use it to substitute “si
lor” if you’re Hokkien and “eh siang noh” if you’re Foochow. I don’t
know many people who appreciate being called amoy though. Hiaw eh, I
have digressed far from what was meant to be a post about dinner.

Mmm…chicken

ckpak.jpg

What I like about these chicken packs are the vegies inside them.
They look like leaves and taste like them too. πŸ™‚ There’s quite a bit
of variety inside too, there are broad green leaves, reddish branches
and stuff like that. Anyway, I’m feeling uninspired and amotivated
today. Still have to work on my stuff for tomorrow’s supervisor meeting
though. I’ll go pop some bubble wrap…

Link of the Day: Perpetual Bubble Wrap [urban75.com]

I could do this all day. There’s just something very appealing about
popping bubble wrap. I can’t stop myself from pressing the round
thingys on drinks from McDonalds too. It’s those round raised things
with labels like ‘Diet’, ‘Other’ etc. Those things are so compulsive…
