Listen to music forever with Yonder

NOFX

I came to the music app bandwagon pretty late. I have heard of a lot of brands that provide such services but never really bothered since I have very fixed tastes in music. I mostly listen to the music I played growing up, the great punk rock bands of OC County circa 1994 – NOFX, Green Day, Offspring, Rancid.

Yonder Beta

However, this all changed when I started to fiddle around with Yonder Music App. I was quite surprised (and impressed) when all the NOFX albums came out when I searched for them. I usually have little faith in most mainstream apps since the bands I like are never in there. Imagine my delight when I saw everything from the classic “Punk in Drublic” to “Heavy Petting Zoo”.

Deep Yonder

Yonder Music App is a new service available to all users of Celcom. It’s not so much a streaming music service but a way of life. Their slogan is “Hear Forever” which is very apt considering Yonder Music App not only streams the songs you play but the songs they think you’ll like. I have to say that it’s spot on in their analysis.

Celcom Yonder

Okay, let me elaborate about what I just said. Yonder has:

  • No subscription fee
  • No download charges
  • No commercials
  • Unlimited access to millions of tracks

Song Stream

That’s coz the licensing is done by the commercial partner Celcom, not you. Revenue is distributed to the artists according to what you play so you don’t need to pay. It not only offers on-demand streaming like other music apps but goes one step further by downloading the songs you played (plus the ones they think you like) so it’s Always On.

Yonder Android

This means that even if you’ve gone offline, you’ll still be able to able to hear related music. This ultimately reduces bandwidth usage and provides your life with a soundtrack. This feature is aptly called the Magic Library coz presumably you get music even though you’re disconnected. Awesome stuff.

Search Yonder

Yonder is also filled with social features. The app stores and syncs users’ playlists, followers and social activity automatically and with their algorithms deliver something they call Social Discovery. What this means is that you get recommendations and continuous play based on what you like and favorite and who you follow.

Playlist

Yup, you can also follow other users, called Heavy Hitters and subscribe to their playlists.

Xpax Yonder

The Leaderboard feature is pretty sweet too. Every track and artist has its own Leaderboard of the Heavy Hitters (which as I’ve said are users like you and me) that they’re most associated with. One of my favorite songs is Dying Degree by NOFX and if you pop in Yonder you’ll see my name on the Leaderboard. This allows everyone to create active communities and build influence with every song you play.

Yonder

I highly recommend this. Celcom is running a contest where you’ll get to see Bruno Mars Live in Vegas just by downloading Yonder Music App. The app is only available for Celcom First and Xpax users and it’s free for now so get your music on now! I wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that it’s changed my life. I’ve enjoyed Yonder Music App so much that I’m even bringing it into the shower to listen to while I sing along, much to the chagrin of my better half.

Yonder Me

My smartphone is waterproof btw, I do not recommend you try this unless yours is too. Meanwhile, if you want to listen to some really cool music, just download Yonder Music App and I’ll see you inside. Try following me if you like a different spin on music, something less commercial and radio friendly. Discover something new, I’ve curated a few playlists (another epic feature of Yonder Music App) so come find me and share my music!

Walking Like a Dream

walking like a dream

I always get reminded of my trip to Bali to visit Tanah Lot when I listen to the song. The vocals evoke an emotional response that elevates it from a mere song to something a lot more. Walking Like a Dream is the latest Yuna single – it is groundbreaking in a lot of ways.

yuna sms

I wrote a post about Yuna creating music history by having the first online concert in Malaysia. Well, I was one of the 10,000 who got the SMS invite and I logged on to watch her perform.

yuna media session

It was amazing. There was actually a media event at twentyone.tables+terrace in bsc but I elected to use my home connection to watch it.

yuna new single

In hindsight, I wished I had gone to the media session – for one, the screen is much bigger than my notebook and I bet the sound system is more awesome too.

yuna live

Nevertheless, I had an awesome time watching Yuna perform her new single…

yuna music video

…and after a campaign to get the public to star in the music video via Hotlink Yuna Music Booths nationwide (it was in a lot of cities and towns around Malaysia) the final production is complete!

Her single (which was untitled at the time) was also done the same way – the winning entry (crowd sourcing FTW) turned out to be Walking Like a Dream.

yuna single

It really is a great song, I’m loading it into my iPad when I travel to Thailand. I bet it’ll be amazing to listen to it by the beach in Phuket!

tanah lot

You can listen to the awesomeness that is Walking Like a Dream by surfing over to www.nowyoucan.my/yuna – the music video is also there and if you’re a Hotlink or Maxis user, you can download the single from Music Unlimited and listen to it wherever you go. πŸ™‚

It’s a mellow and chill song that’s perfect for anything from beach vacations to stressful drives during rush hour.

Full videos of Rain Live in Sepang, Malaysia 2011

rain concert sepang 2011

Here’s another two full videos of Rain performing live in his Rain Live @ Sepang, 2011 concert. I recorded several of his set songs that day but since I don’t actually listen to him I’ll just call it β€œthe fast song” and β€œthe ballad” coz that’s just what it sounds like. Heh!

The fast dance music tempo song

The songs are in Korean – I don’t know the titles of them but the crowd went wild for both so I’m guessing they’re either fluent in the language or just too awed by his muscular pecs and brilliant mane of hair. smirk

The ballad

Speaking of hair, Rain only registers to someone like me (who doesn’t listen to K-pop) coz he was endorsing shampoo in a series of ads on TV a while back. I’m not sure if you can make girls go all weak kneed if you have his hair (remember Aaron Kwok and his popular haircut back in the 90’s?) but having a full crown of hair always helps. πŸ˜‰

Top 10 mood killers

When life turns a rather depressing bleak and grey hue…

#1 You didn’t get the memo?

memo

No, I didn’t dammit! What memo? *feels left out of the loop*

/cue late nights in the office

#2 Washing dirty laundry in public

laundry

This is my empty laundry bin. There is an equally empty wardrobe a few meters away.

I hate my laundrette with a passion. I have a very limited range of attire so I need prompt and reliable laundry services. Unfortunately the closest one to where I live is anything but.

#3 Red light district

red light

I ran a red light just now while heading to the clinic. In my defence, it was amber when I accelerated. On the way back, I found out that the very same intersection which I took the liberty of speeding through has a red light camera from my GPS.

Yeah, just add that on to my existing summons. πŸ™

summons

Oh wait, you’ve already added it. Merde.

#4 Don’t drop the soap

water

I forgot to pay for my utilities, resulting in my electricity getting disconnected, promptly followed by my water supply. You know how it feels when you’ve soaped yourself up, with shampoo running into your eyes and no H20 coming out of the shower?

It feels like it’s going to be a bad day, that’s what it feels like.

#5 Bills, bills, bills

bills

Related to #4 there’s so many it’s hard to keep track and when you don’t, official looking letters printed on red paper comes into your mailbox. God forbid you have a busy week at work following that – you’ll end up coming home to a dark apartment, with light switches that won’t turn on. No matter how many times you try. Even if you ask it politely.

#6 Fortune reversal

savings

I lost RM 11,000 over the course of one week in New Zealand and Genting. I have a special account for the down payment of my condo later this year and this is what it currently shows. RM 27,461.04. I doubt that would get me anything more than shack under a bridge. It’s a good thing I still have RM 19,000 in cheques which I haven’t banked in.

#7 Shooting blanks

toothpaste

Toothpaste. Empty tubes. You can’t even squeeze a pea, nay, atom sized drop out of it…and just when you need to get ready for work too. I curse myself for not stocking extra toothpaste like my dad does.

#8 Your money hard at work

bank

My ATM card went missing last Friday. I think I might have dropped it somewhere or (more likely) forgot to take it out of the machine due to my haste that day. I cancelled it and went to do a new one – which took me a whole hour. Why? There is one open desk with the bank personnel just sitting there, hard at work doing absolutely nothing.

#9 Plastic surgery

credit-card

I don’t have a caption for this. Just look at the Outstanding Balance. >.<

#10 Workin’ 9 to 5

(except it’s more like at least 12 hours a day in my line of work)

working

What a way to make a livin’
Barely gettin’ by
It’s all takin’ and no givin’
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It’s enough to drive you crazy when you if let it!

9 to 5, for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead, but the boss won’t seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me!
9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you

There’s a better life and you think about it don’t you? πŸ˜‰

Now to add a splash of color to your life!

color

Release all that stress and pent up frustration now! Let your hair down, grab a nice cocktail, and go wild on the dance floor!

There are three parties coming up and I’m going to head down to all of them!

wonderland

WONDERLAND

Drop down the rabbit hole and lose yourself in Wonderland! There will be Alice in Wonderland costume shows, dance shows and…wait for it…

Wonderland Maids for you to take photos with!
smirk

It already sounds like an ideal party to me. πŸ˜‰

EUROBEATS

There will be an orbit lightshow performance and it’s trance. Nuff said. πŸ™‚

FASHIONISTA

The biggest and the best of them all! There will be a fashion show and after that, you’ll get a chance to dance on the runway. Now that’s not something you can do every day!

Also on the menu is signature cocktails and a chance to get up close and personal (no, not in that way, the bouncers will kick you out) with the international Mixologists and create your very own cocktail!

Encore by HORECA. It’s the new party in town! Admission is free! Click for more details.

cheers

Hey, come out and play! πŸ™‚

Saying it with Music Telegrams

I’ve always had a HUGE crush on Jun-Jun Riko. Unfortunately, I missed her posting on a boyfriend vacancy so I have been bidding my time for the outpouring of my love for her. Well, it seems that great minds think alike (?) coz the feelings are reciprocal!

jjr

I didn’t even know until I sent her a random email declaring my love for her.

Flowers are getting so passΓ© nowadays, sometimes you just gotta say it with music. Music soothes even the savage beast and all that.

send

Plus, it only costs RM 5 for a full track compared to at least RM 100 for flowers. They’re having a 50% discount now so it’s just RM 2.50 for a full track! Very easy on the wallet considering I’m quite pok kai this month. I’m doing mosaic on her number so that you all won’t be chomping at the bit to get to this delicious morsel. Pun intended. πŸ˜‰

I’ve heard the DiGi commercials on Hitz FM with outrageous (in a good way) dedications…a student sending his love to his teacher and a girl breaking up with her boyfriend coz she now prefers women are two memorable ones. I LOLed while driving to the office on that one.

It seems that the more controversial the dedication is, the more likely it will be played on air. Plus, the more interesting dedications will have the honor of the DiGi Music Squad actually going over (!!!) to the recipient’s location to play the song! The band will even perform the song live! Check it out at the Radio Promo microsite.

jjr-dedicate

However, true love cannot wait (even though I’ve held it back for so long) so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I logged on to DiGi’s Music Store, chose an appropriate song and sent it to her cell phone.

I have known her cell phone number for ages but never did muster up the courage to call, fearing rejection.

With this nifty new method, I can easily pass it off as “Eh, I send to wrong number, sorry ya” should the recipient be less-than-receptive to my amorous advances. πŸ˜‰

david

I sent the Music Telegram her way (it was David Archuleta – Crush) and she called me back and sent me photos saying that she feels the exact same way.

jjr-thanks

I’ve got a date scheduled with her on Saturday night.

Wish me luck, everyone. πŸ˜‰

GABA – it’s not just a genre of music (that’s gabba)

I am so sleepy right now. I had a nice, long sleep from 12 pm to
nearly 10 pm but only the first 6 hours was any good…large cymbals
clashing over my face would not rouse me. It might give me a nosebleed,
but I’ll still be asleep. πŸ˜‰ Unfortunately, the increased binding of
GABA to my GABAA receptors and the resulting opening of the
chloride channel to promote the entry of Cl- which leads to
hyperpolarization and inhibited cellular excitation started to decrease
when I was 6 hours into my nice slumber. I’m being intentionally
obscure here, if you haven’t noticed. πŸ™‚

maccamrl.jpg

Anyway, I started to wake frequently after 6 hours – my neighbor
closing her door, our floor’s phone ringing, the resulting knocking on
doors and shouts of “phone call”, even the fucking toilet flushing made
me wake up. It’s all good though, I feel pretty rested but still
slightly sedated, but we’ll fix that later with some…caffeine of
course, what did you think I was going to say? Well, I’ll be off to
McDonald’s with my mates soon, and then it’s no sleep till Monday as I
finish up my written assignments this big fuck off coding assignment
which I haven’t even started. I had better get my laundry done too,
before I have to resort to re-wearing dirty underwear. The photo above
was taken outside the McDonalds we usually go to – it’s a mural of some
sort, with a caricature of someone with the Maccas Krew…thought it was
Simon Creen at first, but his facial features do not look the one in
the deco after a second look.

P/S – Thanks for commenting everyone, I’ll reply when I get back.
