Preserved duck liver snacks

duck_liver_pack.jpg

Bernice passed me one of these…I’m not really good in Chinese (the
written and reading comprehension bit), so I didn’t know what it was.
She got two while visiting someone and I assumed that it was a plum or
something like that.

duck liver pack back

It looks like a plum from the way it’s packaged. Perhaps a nice, rare juicy plum, individually packaged for freshness.

duck liver

It wasn’t plum. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the tiny pack and saw what looked like meat. Mmm…meat. πŸ˜‰

I only knew that it was liver after I got her to read the packaging.
It’s preserved duck liver. The wonders of food technology! I was amazed
that it was still juicy and tender, very tender, after being packaged
in this manner. It tasted fresh too, not like something out of a can or
something.

duck liver more

Well, she managed to get some more of these preserved duck livers
and I thoroughly enjoyed every single pack. It’s not available here;
she told me the person she got it off from just came back from a trip
to China. It’s really good. The texture isn’t like one of those beef
jerky types, but like an actual succulent piece of deli meat.

duck liver liver

It doesn’t taste like liver too, but here’s another shot of it
during the second taste test. It does look like liver once you open it
up and take a real good look at it. Good duck liver, with bits of fat
intact and did I mention how juicy it was?

I hear preserved duck liver is considered a delicacy in China, where this product is made.

New Bugles Chips Sampler

new bugles girl

This is the promoter giving out free samplers of the new line of
Bugles chips (or crisps, depending on which country you come from). She
was very insistent on giving us every flavor – off the top of my head
there were classic, BBQ and corn.

new_bugles.jpg

It’s all packaged nicely in a Bugles custom made cone. This was at
Berjaya Times Square. I love these things – these custom samplers.

Frugurt Yogurt

frugurt yogurt style

I just couldn’t resist…I thought it looked cute, and when I picked
it up and shook it, its eyes rolled in a hilarious manner so I just had
to buy it immediately. Heh! It’s just too funny.

frugurt office

Frugurt Assorted Yogurt Style is now sitting on my work desk. I just got it last night and I predict it would be a big hit.

frugurt assorted

It tastes great too. It’s a bizarre blend of yoghurt and fruits and
it has nata de coco at the bottom. This is a video clip of me in my
workplace with the Frugurt container. It’s so funny.

The video was shot by Bernice. To all my coworkers, please feel free
to help yourself to the Frugurt on my table. It’s great and more
importantly, it’s hilarious. πŸ™‚

Strange snacks

strange korean candy

Strange snacks always seem to be around every time I come home. This
one is apparently a Korean candy of some sort, featuring several cute
characters.

strange korean char

I was expecting it to taste bad but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was delicious!

strange korean ball

It all contains a round ball of something I can’t identify, but it
has sorbet like properties in the middle and chewy gum (edible)
covering it. I can’t describe the taste with anything except –
excellent!

strange jelly

This is a decidedly gay looking jelly. I don’t know who bought it, but no one ate it, so I did. It’s jelly, no surprises here.

strange fruit marsh car

There is also a snack dubbed Fruit Vehicle Marsh Mallow and it comes
in a shape of a car, the package that is. I had wondered what the
unholy fusion of fruit and marshmallows would taste like…

strange fruit marsh

…and the answer is good.

strange choc shrooms box

This one features tantalizingly suggestive chocolate covered (magic?) mushrooms.

strange choc shrooms open

I had high expectations for this one (no pun intended). I opened one pack with anticipation.

strange choc shrooms

I was let down by the taste (it tasted stale, to be honest) but the
presentation was wonderful. There’s an articulate piece of chocolate in
the shape of a mushroom cap, with the details, attached to a biscuit
stem.

strange snacks

Strange snacks indeed…

Press release and the amazing dragon fruit based tart

ha shirt

We got our company shirts (meant for the exhibition, but we wore it today for the press conference anyway) today.

[Deleted: Three papers published it, two with my photo, one with a ghost photo.]

Here are the refreshments, personally made by a home baker (not selling to the public):

amazing dragon fruit tarts

This is a wonderful fruit tart – it has dragon fruit
[sixthseal.com] (first time I’ve seen this in a fruit tart), kiwi fruit
and a slice of apple. It’s wonderful – best I’ve ever had. The company
ordered a lot from the home baker (friend of one of the management) so
we managed to eat our fill as well.

home made savory pie

Here’s a savory pie – it has meat, peas, carrots and various things in a crumbly crust. It’s good.

home made sweet pie

This is the sweet pie – with a mix of fruits inside. This one got sapu really fast so the photo is a lonely single pie.

triple sandwich

This triple filling sandwich is also very popular – made with grain
bread and having two crispy, finely shredded vegetables with another
meat based one. It has a nice mix of colors, very appealing.

Bottled water is also available, but I’m sure no one wants to see that.

Lotte Black Black Wake Up Gum

lotte black black

This is the illustrious Lotte Black Black chewing gum – the caffeine
gum from Japan. Except this one isn’t made in Japan…it’s manufactured
in Indonesia. I remember the Japanese Lotte Black Black imports the
Asian grocery store used to carry when I was in Melbourne. I thought it
was alright – caffeine gums! It didn’t do much for me though, since I
used to take No-Doz (100 mg caffeine tablets) like candy so I have a
tolerance to caffeine.

lotte wake up gum

I haven’t seen Lotte Black Black gum in Malaysia though, and I was
surprised to see them at Ting & Ting’s. Lotte Black Black Wake Up
Gum retails for RM 0.65. This version is packed in a cardboard box
instead of the normal chewing gum stick format. It also has a prominent
Wake Up Gum sign in the middle, as can be seen in the photo above.

lotte black black zzz

They even had the sheer audacity to put this image at the back of the packet. Zzz stopped short by a universal “No” sign.
Hmph…we’ll see…
I’m the reviewer from hell when it comes to evaluating products with
stimulant properties and outrageous claims like this tend to elicit an
unfavorable response.
What do they put inside? Methamphetamine?

It turns out that it’s just plain old tame caffeine. Pfffttttt…

lotte black black caffeine

I did notice a difference between the Japan made ones and the
Indonesian made ones though. The Lotte Black Black from Japan lists
caffeine, gingko extract and some other ingredients which I can’t
remember. The Indonesian ones that we get here doesn’t have that many
items, and it lists coffee instead of caffeine as the active ingredient.

lotte black black chewing gum

Anyway, I opened the pack and found 8 pellets of gum, which looked
rather crusty and had white discoloring on the surface of each coated
gum. I popped all of them and chewed…and waited…and waited…and
waited. I am forced to conclude that the caffeine content in these gums
from Indonesia is very low and practically undetectable. Please do
yourself a favor and buy a cup of coffee instead.

I rate Lotte Black Black Wake Up Gum (Indonesia) as a completely
worthless product with no redeeming features. Hell, I would have fallen
asleep during the taste test if it weren’t for the administration of a
superior stimulant (which will not be named since it’s irrelevant to
the review) to keep myself awake.

Wake up gum, my ass…

Hard! Hard! Mi Goreng

hard hard mi goreng perisa ketam

This inappropriately named snack was found at a grocery store near
my workplace today. It says Hard Hard Mi Goreng Perisa Ketam, or Hard
Hard Crab Flavored Fried Noodles.

hard hard logo

This is what the Hard Hard logo looks like. It rather resembles a
phallic structure with some sheath over it, presumably to avoid er…crabs. The logo even has shows having its cap “blown off” the top, so to speak.

hard hard keropok

This is what Hard Hard keropok looks like. We now know that it not only has crabs, but genital warts as well…

However, I’m rather dubious about marketing crab infested and wart
filled phalluses (phalli?) as edible material towards children. This is
a very dangerous precedent to instill towards young, impressionable
minds. I think I’ll write a letter to the Consumers Association of
Malaysia to convey my concerns about this disquieting product. Excuse
me…

Canned oysters

canned smoked oysters

I’ve always wondered about oysters in a tin…are they any good? I
decided to get one to address this pressing question. This is S&W Fancy Whole Smoked Oysters
from Korea. I can understand canned fish…but I’ve always thought
whether canned oysters would taste the same as fresh ones, or at least
bear some resemblance to it.

canned oysters package

It comes in a small flat tin inside a cardboard insert. It costs RM
9.80. The back of the packaging read “S&W Smoked Oysters – Simply
Wonderful. A tasty snack specially selected and smoked over sweet woods
for a delicate flavor”. Hmm…we’ll see.

smoked oysters tin

The actual flat tin is unremarkable – there are no marks on it, just a plain container, with a pull up ring.

here be oysters
Here be oysters…

eat smoked oysters

It didn’t look all that good to me. The oysters are squashed pretty
tightly inside the tin, packed like…er, sardines in a can. I ate a
couple.

mmm oysters

The ones in the middle are rather brittle in texture, and I would
not have associated it with oysters if it was a blind taste test. The
ones towards the side of the can, however, maintain the springy and
moist texture I associate with mollusks. I wonder if this anomaly is
due to the canning and preservation process.

oysters good

Nevertheless, I pronounce canned oysters as Good. It may not
look so good, but at least it tasted somewhat like smoked oysters. I’m
not a big fan of canned food, but this one is alright – it adheres to
the smoked oyster taste and texture.

Carmelle dessert

original carmelle box

Carmelle dessert with caramel sauce! I love these things! I was
surprised when I saw a box of Carmelle on the supermarket shelves. I
thought this wonderful product has been discontinued! It looked similar
to the ones that I remembered – it has the familiar green packaging and
the unmistakable upturned custard with caramel sauce picture on it. I
used to eat heaps of these when I was in primary school. They came in
individual serve packets then, about 10 to a pack, instead of one large
portion that it comes packaged in now. Otherwise, it all looks the
same, right down to the brand name. Sweet nostalgia! πŸ™‚

carmelle sachets

This is what the Carmelle box contains – there’s a pack of custard
yellow powder and a sachet of thick caramel. It’s officially called a
vanilla flavored dessert mix with caramel topping, but it tastes like
custard with caramel topping. It’s ingenious really…the caramel is
sticky and thick and when the heated custard liquid is poured over it,
it slowly melts and becomes a topping, instead of mixing into the
liquid.

carmelle milk

All it requires is some milk, and we’re good to go! It’s just like I remembered…

carmelle caramel

I made this with my girlfriend yesterday, before I came back. The
caramel sachet was squeezed into two bowls instead of one to make it
set faster.

carmelle hot milk

The milk was brought to a boil…

carmelle stir

and the custard sachet emptied into the boiling milk, taking care to stir semi-vigorously for about two minutes.

hot carmelle

The boiling custard mix was then poured into the bowls (which already has the caramel in it) and left alone to cool.

Once an appropriate amount of time has passed (this can be done by
doing the “jiggle test” – basically, gently agitate the receptacle your
custard is in and watch the movements of the custard to infer the
solidity ;)), the bowl was overturned into a plate.

carmelle

This is what Carmelle looks like – custard with a caramel topping. I
like to have it semi-solid, it goes down better than way. Carmelle is a
quick and easy dessert and it tastes great!

carmelle eat

Happy eating! I love creme caramel!

Keropok perisa ayam (square tapioca crisps)

bika bulk

Do you remember those square tapioca keropok (crisps) that was
widely available in our primary school days? I love those things – it’s
the best testing crisps in the world! It’s made from tapioca instead of
potatos, unlike mosts crisps. I seriously cannot find anything that
rivals these things (though Double Decker chicken crisps comes a close
second)…it’s simply delicious. I couldn’t find it in normal retail
outlets though…it seems to be only sold in bulk (100 packs or so).

keropok perisa ayam

Well, I managed to find some at this shop near a primary school – it’s not the original ones that I remembered, but they taste exactly
the same. It costs the same too, which was surprising. It’s a very
affordable RM 0.20 per packet. Just 20 cents like it used to be!
Nostalgia…I could eat heaps and heaps of these without getting sick,
and most people in my workplace loves these things too, the shop is
near the place I work.

tapioca crisps

Basically, its square crisps flavored with chicken with heaps of MSG. Mmm…tasty!

In other news, I had a long meeting today with the MBKS (Kuching
South Council) mayor and his entourage. I don’t know what half the
people in the meeting room was there for – they didn’t seem to be
related to the project and was just there sitting passively and nodding
their heads and smiling at the appropriate moments (usually on the
mayor or his assistant’s cue). I went to the MBKS HQ with my CEO, CFO
and CTO and we successfully secured a project…which means more work
for me in the foreseeable future, but hey, it’s what I’m being paid
for. The suaku guy in me was amazed at the expensively decorated and
architecturally extravagant interior and the lavish meeting room. There
was even an attendant to make sure our coffee cups were full and he was
serving us sandwiches as well. It’s shrink wrapped individual ones with
a polystyrene container and a three layer sandwich in one side and a
two layer one in the other. I don’t know what’s inside though. We later
surveyed the site for a while and I highly regretted not bringing my
digicam along (I figured it would look unprofessional) since there were
good photo opportunities – the view was amazing from there. Suaku guy,
signing out…
