KFC Garden Salad with Popcorn Chicken

This is KFC’s latest introduction – the KFC Garden Salad
at RM 3.80. It’s a variety of vegetables (it differs in Peninsula
Malaysia and East Malaysia) served with Thousand Island dressing on the
side.

It also comes with an option for Popcorn Chicken (KFC’s mini chicken nuggets) for a “complete meal” at RM 5.

This is what KFC’s Garden Salad looks like. It’s served in a plastic
receptacle and the vegetables are cold. There are also two packets of
Thousand Island dressing and the salad is served with a plastic fork.

We have lettuce leaves lining the bottom, a bedding of shredded
carrots, corn kernels scattered throughout the salad, cucumber sticks
lining the tray and sliced tomatos on top.

The Thousand Island dressing is then drizzled liberally…

…and the KFC Garden Salad with Popcorn Chicken was half heartedly
tossed. You can’t get much tossing done with a plastic fork, I can tell
you that.

Nevertheless, I found it delicious – all the vegetables tastes
fresh, cold and crunchy and the crispness of the lettuce tasted
wonderful with the hot popcorn chicken. I wonder what the regional
variations are – I know the ones in KL have red capsicum, which we
don’t.

KFC Satay Burger

KFC Satay Burger is a newly launched product – the latest burger
from the KFC fast food franchise, targeted at local market tastes. I
like the satay fan image behind the logo, it represents the fan satay
sellers use to manually fan the hot charcoal in the past, but they use
auto fans for that nowadays…it’s a trip down nostalgia lane.

I couldn’t resist reviewing something like this of course, so I went
for the KFC Satay burger combo meal. It comes with a free KFC tumbler
and I had the red one. The KFC Satay combo meal comprises of:

1 KFC Satay Burger
1 Potato Wedges (4pcs)
1 Carbonated drink (R)
1 Cool Cup
(available in 4 cool colors)

Hey, don’t look at me like that. I wasn’t the one who wrote it. 😉

This is what the KFC Satay Combo Meal looks like. I should explain
what satay sauce is at this point – it’s a peanut based sauce, with
predominantly sweet flavors and is used to complement satay, which is
meat skewed on sticks. The satay burger from KFC only retains the satay
sauce and cucumbers as the topping.

The Satay Burger comes in its own wrapping; the easy cone shaped
wrapper that has become the de facto standard nowadays – eat without
getting your hands dirty! You can think of satay sauce as chunky peanut
butter with a less creamy texture and with a saltier aftertaste to it.
It tastes better than it sounds.

Now, we come to the meat of the matter (excuse the pun). The Satay
burger is basically a Zinger with satay sauce and cucumbers on it.
Honestly, I heard the KFC supervisor on duty say that. 🙂 The cucumber
slices are nice and crisp and I like how the satay sauce tastes like,
although it seems to confuse itself with sambal sometimes.

It looks kinda messy, but it tastes great.

…and you get a free KFC water tumbler to boot. Mine is red. What’s yours? 😉

The strawberry cheese cake was nice, with the strawberry flavor
distinctively discernable through the cheese cake and a very thin base,
which is always good in a cheese cake. I like my cheese cake to be less
dense and have a creamier mouth-feel though.

There was nothing aesthetically wrong with this “gourmet sandwich”.
The salad greens were nicely and evenly coated with dressing and the
sandwich is flanked by warm bread which has a crunchy crust but yields
to softer pastry. There were egg, smoked salmon and onions, dressed
with herb sauce. I just want more smoked salmon.

Coffee Bean/Starbucks/Some other “gourmet coffee” chain”: The
favorite haunt of pseudo intellectual pretentious fucks everywhere.

McDonald’s Crispy Prawn Burger and Prawn Wrappers

McDonald’s is having two new items on its New Wave Menu – Crispy Prawn Burger and Prawn Wrappers makes up the New Wave Prawn Menu.

It sounds like the New Tastes Menu concept in McDonald’s, Australia.
I’ve had the fish items already so this time I went for the new prawn
offerings. They can be ordered separately or as part of a McValue Meal.

The prawn wrappers are also available at the discounted price of RM
2.95 when ordered with each meal, though this comes in a 4 piece set
instead of the regular 6 piece set.

This is the crispy prawn burger. It’s actually surprisingly good. I
was expecting a prawn patty inside a bun, and technically, that was
what it was, but it tasted better than I expected.

Here’s a close up of the McDonald’s Crispy Prawn Burger. It’s made
with real prawns, or at least, it tasted like prawns were used, you
never know with the advances in the food flavor industry nowadays. Note
the pieces of green inside the soft burger prawn patty – they actually
have veggies inside, a nice attention to detail.

The lettuce was fresh and crispy and I loved the bun it came in – very nice, recommended!

This is the prawn wrappers. It’s the regular 6 piece set and it comes with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce.

I didn’t like the sauce though – it overwhelmed the prawn’s taste.

Here’s the close-up of the McDonald’s Prawn Wrappers. Its individual
prawns dipped in batter and deep fried to perfection. The batter didn’t
overwhelm the prawns and the insides were warm but still moist while
the tail end of the prawn was crispy enough that you could eat it!

This is the new product by KFC – Chick-a-Cheese! It costs RM 1.90
and didn’t look like much from the banner, but I went in to check it
out anyway.

What does it taste like? It tasted surprisingly good actually. The
warm cheese was divine, melting out of the crispy batter and creating a
wonderful fusion with the sausage. Recommended!

Free McFloat with Big Mac McValue Meal

I haven’t been to McDonald’s for a while…dropped in this afternoon
for a quick lunch after ironing out some annoying bugs and noticed that
McDonald’s has a promotion going on where you get a free soft serve top
up with every Big Mac value meal. It’s basically an upgrade of your
coke to a McFloat for no extra charge.

I’m rather partial to Spicy Chicken McDeluxe myself, but I thought,
why not, and got the Big Mac meal instead. I haven’t had one in ages
and I’ll need to start pre-loading for my Weekend Warrior Thing (TM).
😉 Big Macs sure tastes good after you haven’t had one in a while. The
coke float (or spider, as some people call it for reasons that escapes
my comprehension) was a welcome addition as well.

KFC Tom Yam Crunch

It’s finger lickin’ good Tom Yam!

Tom Yam Crunch is the latest incarnation of the tried and true
Kentucky Fried Chicken’s…er, chicken. There’s now Hot & Spicy
(introduced in the mid ’90s) and Tom Yam Crunch in addition to Original
Recipe. There is no indication that Tom Yam Crunch will be a “limited
edition” run, so I’m assuming that it’s going to be fully integrated
into the KFC chicken menu.

It even receives Colonel Sander’s approval in this promo runout. 😉
It goes “Your favourite chicken, now in Tom Yam. Try It!” I’m sure most
of you have seen the TV commercials about this as well. I can’t say
that I’m chomping at the bit to try it, since it seems to be just a bit
of spices thrown on a fried chicken, and that doesn’t inspire me to
make an immediate visitation to see how well it tastes.

Here’s another one of the promotional posters…this one goes “Tom
Yam now served inside. (Spoons and bowls not required)”. I should not
have gone late at night during Labor Day though because the place was
absolutely packed. Nevertheless, we wrestled the hordes of hungry
patrons and placed our order for KFC’s new Tom Yam Crunch Chicken.

The first impression did not give any visual clues to differentiate
these pieces of chicken parts to the standard offerings. However, when
a bite was taken out of a drumstick – that’s when the Tom Yam taste
shines out. It does taste like Tom Yam! It’s remarkably similar to Tom
Yam. I’ll even go so far to say that if someone liquidifies the skin
and feeds it to me in a blind taste test with the other item being real
Tom Yam soup, I’ll have a hard time differentiating it!

Okay that last bit was a bit too far, but you get my point. 😉 I
find that Tom Yam Crunch is a great addition to the existing flavours
of Kentucky Fried Chicken’s meat (which is exclusively chicken, this is
moot). It was spicy and preserves the Tom Yam essence with its skin.
Only the skin has the Tom Yam taste, the inside doesn’t. The macro
photo above shows the smattering of spices on the skin of a piece of
thigh.

There is an existing promotion that sells Nestle Drumstick X-treme
for only RM 1.50 instead of RM 2.60 with any order of Tom Yam Crunch.
We opted into that promotion, I like the X-treme ice creams, it’s like
chocolate times two.

Back to the chicken, my girlfriend liked it as well, though she said
it was a little too spicy and she didn’t like the signature sourish
taste of Tom Yam that permeated this Tom Yam Crunch chicken.
Personally, I feel that it’s a great addition to KFC’s meagre stable of
chicken flavors. It’s faithful to the Tom Yam essence and yet manages
to strike a balance between that and the tricky bit of infusing a fried
chicken piece with that flavor. They did it well. I give it a thumbs up!

Pizza Hut Seafood Symphony (Ocean Spinner Game!)

Pizza Hut has this seafood promotion going on. We went there last
night for dinner and had the Atlantis Combo 2, which includes 4 seafood
soup as the appetizer, a large pan pizza (choice of Neptune Delight,
Thai Seafood, Hawaiian Tuna or Island Supreme) as the main course, 2
Alfredo Tuna Spaghetti or Seafood Lasagna as the side order, 4 Black
Forest Trifle as the dessert and a pitcher of Pepsi as the beverage.

This promotion comes with a game, just like the XXX Pizza did last
time. The above shows the game board – there’s a spinner on the upper
right hand corner and a board on covering the left, with a red triangle
as the piece that you move.

The Ocean Spinner shown here shows which navigational direction your piece will move. It’s made to look like a compass.

You’re allowed to spin twice and you move the piece accordingly.
Miriam spinned, since she was the guest of honor (last dinner before
she leaves) and the red Bermuda Triangle moved up twice, giving us this:

It had something resembling seafood inside and it had a seafood taste to it. I can’t comment further than that.

The lasagna is good, there’s not much seafood bits inside, but the creamy sauce makes up for that.

It was alright, but nothing to write home about. It had pieces of
Seafood Stuff (TM) in a thick sauce of unknown origin. It tastes
like…well, seafood.

This is the new pizza so we went for this one. It has tuna, squid,
pineapple, crabmeat stick, green capsicum, fresh tomato and lime
mayonnaise sauce.

We went for the cheese crust as well. It’s fit for Neptune himself.
It tasted good to me anyway. I think I ate half of the whole pizza
(munchies).

Black Forest Trifle

It has a blueberry jelly top and a bottom that has the consistency
of custard, with a layer of biscuit crumbs in the middle. Tastes rather
like cheesecake.

This is the scanned photo from Valentine’s Day when I went to eat Pizza Hut’s SweetHeart Pizza
[sixthseal.com]. I received a call just now on my cell from an unknown
082 (Kuching) number, answered it and the Pizza Hut guy asked where I
was. Told him I was in Padungan (where I worked) and a guy came in 5
minutes to give me the photo. Thus, this is me eating alone on
Valentine’s Day (afternoon, went out with friends at night) in Pizza
Hut, Kuching.

I went to Pizza Hut for their Sweet Heart pizza after work. The
funniest thing happened while I was there, more details below. I work
half days on Saturday till 12:30 pm. I went alone, coz obviously it
won’t be right to go with someone else since I’m in a relationship. 🙂

That did not dissuade me from going to try their SweetHeart pizza
though. It’s a limited edition pizza, and the word “limited edition”
always activates my consumerism mentality. 😉 It’s a heart shaped pizza
too, how many times do you get to see that? 🙂

The guy taking my order made a double take when I ordered that pizza
– it seems that only couples are allowed to order it. 😉 He did recover
and asked me if I wanted the pizza cut or served whole. I wanted it
whole. Well, two guys selling flowers came in after that and er…I was
a bit of a smartass with them too…

Guy #1: Hello sir, would you like to buy a flower?
Me: (looks pointedly at the empty seat opposite me) Tell me…does it look like I want to buy a flower?
Guy #1: Er…
Guy #2: Maybe you can buy it for your girlfriend?
Me: Nope, go ask someone else.
Guy #1: Thank you sir.

Now, that would have made me guilty for being rude, them thanking me
after my loud brush off, but my order came, so I shook away my
conscience and concentrated on the food. 😉 This is Pizza Hut’s

Anyway, back to the funniest thing that happened. At this time, one
of the Pizza Hut’s staff approached me and said “Sir, do you mind if we
take a photo of you with the pizza?”

I don’t mind having my picture taken, so I said “Sure, go ahead.”
The guy then posed me a bit and moved the heart shaped pizza and then
asked me to smile. Now this is a pretty strange thing to be going on,
and you all would never believe me (my gf didn’t until I said I have a
photo to prove it). I asked him to hold his pose and let me take one of
him and he was very obliging. Here you go:

Anyway, I didn’t bother to ask what the photo was for. I didn’t
really care actually, since I always take public photos anyway.
However, as I dug into the pizza, the same guy approached me again and
asked for my address and phone number. Now this…this I’ll have to ask
what it’s for. He said they’re selecting photos of people eating in
Pizza Hut for a promo and they’ll send a copy of it to me and call me
if I’m selected for the print ad.

Strange huh, the things that happen in Pizza Hut. Strange, but nice. 🙂

Back to the pizza, it tasted really good. Was it salty or was it
sweet was the question that’s on my mind and the answer is…it’s
neither! The flavors all blended together nicely to a not sweet not
salty flavor. Very strange. I liked the combination of pineapple and
almond flakes with chicken. They compliment each other and flakes gives
the pizza a nice crunchy texture.
