30 minute crispy noodles

30 min crispy noodles

This plate of crispy noodles took 30 minutes to arrive. I was having
lunch with a co-worker and we both had to go to the bank so we ordered
crispy noodles, which is probably the fastest turnaround dish since the
kolo mee stall it having an off day. Crispy noodles are the pre-fried
noodles that comes…well, crispy and the cook just needs to prepare
the sauce and pour it over the noodles. It’s a really good noodle dish,
the contrast of the crispy and soggy noodles with the hot sauce
combines to create an unusual but tasty texture. The thing about crispy
noodles is, it doesn’t get soggy unless you purposely push it down into
the sauce.

Anyway, back to the long turnover, it was due to a large family
(complete with elders, heaps of young children and the obligatory
Indonesian maid) taking up two big tables and ordering heaps of food. I
think there should be a law banning these diners from eating at places
frequented by office workers during lunch hour.

The Devil’s Kiss

the devils kiss

This afternoon was baking day at the sixthseal.com bakery. That, of
course, is just really my girlfriend’s kitchen – she has more baking
stuff than my kitchen does, coz my family doesn’t spend time doing
things like baking. We made a Devil’s food cake which I’ll like to call
The Devil’s Kiss. Yes, it was from a cake mix, but we customized it
(er…kinda), so there. :p

Recipe for The Devil’s Kiss:

moist devils food
One Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Devil’s Food cake mix

hersheys kisses
One pack of Hershey’s Kisses

dairy whip
One can of Dairy Whip whipped cream

dunhill old master
One Dunhill Scotch Master “Finest Scotch Whisky”

and the things that the cake mix requires, which wasn’t much – 3
eggs, 1 1/3 cups of water, and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Nothing you
would be hard pressed to find in any kitchen (even mine).

cake mix water

We started out by pouring the cake mix into the mixing bowl and
adding in 1 1/3 cups of water. I don’t know the exact empirical figures
for “cups” so we didn’t bother with conversion to SI units like litres,
and just poured in (literally) one full cup and another filled a third
up.

cake mix oil

Next, we added in the vegetable oil. I was a bit doubtful when I
read this…a recipe that calls for cooking oil instead of butter for
cake seems kinda dodgy. However, that’s what it says on the package, so
that’s what it’s going to be. My girlfriend handled the huge cooking
oil bottle while I took a photo – we did not bother with cups because
that would mean more things to wash up after we’re done. πŸ˜‰

It should be noted that more than 1/2 cup of vegetable oil was
poured in…the oil container is as unwieldy as it looks, and while I
sat on the frontlines to monitor the pourage (meaning, I sat on my ass
while I watched her pouring it), too much oil got into the mix. I was
going like “yeah, that looks about right, you can stop now, thanks” and
my gf was still going at and I was like “OMG, stop!” and she was still
going at it and when I finally put the digicam down and took the
cooking oil bottle away from her (it’s dangerous in her hands), I
guesstimated that more than one cup of oil landed into the mix. Oh
well…

cake mix eggs

Anyway, three large eggs were cracked into the mix after that. It’s
noteworthy to say that all these preparations took a long time and we
did not follow the recipe religiously, and spent ample time doing other
stuff while the mix was lying there. I also added about 6 shots of
Dunhill scotch whisky into the mix. I was considering whether to go for
Chivas Regal or this one, and decided on this one, because it tastes
better than Chivas.

drinking makes baking fun

I also took the liberty of adding some whisky into myself at this
point. The recipe calls for 30 seconds of stirring, and I felt that
having a drink in my hand would make the task much more pleasurable. πŸ˜‰
One does get sick of cheap alcohol, so this premium scotch is a very
welcome drink instead and makes the baking process much better. It goes
very well with clonazepam too, but don’t add that into the baking mix,
for Christ’s sake.

cake mix stir

Thus, I stirred the mix for about 30 seconds (or until I was tired of stirring, didn’t know which came first, really).

prepped cake tin

Now, we realized that we need to find an appropriate receptacle for
our cake mix, so we searched for one. The candidates were: a small
circular cake tin, a long bread mould tin and a square cake tin. We
chose the last one and used butter to grease the inside and finely
powdered it with flour as per the cake mix instructions.

cake mix beat

The cake mix, which now contains the original Devil’s food mix,
three large eggs, water, vegetable oil, and scotch whisky was processed
with one of them cake mixers for two minutes or so. The box said two
minutes anyway, we did not time ourselves, we just looked at the very
hypnotic swirls until we shook ourselves and realized that the cake mix
seems to be smooth.

unkiss kisses

I then proceeded to prepare the Hershey’s Kisses by unwrapping it
from the foil and pulling out those damned liners. I like to call this
“unkissing the kisses”.

cake mix pour

The cake mix was poured into the cake tin…

cake mix kisses

and Hershey’s Kisses were dropped into the mix at random spots. I
used up the whole packet, there is bound to be one in every square inch
of the cake.

enter oven

Finally, we realized that we have not pre-heated the oven and did
so. It should be noted that I did not want to do any calculations to
change Fahrenheit to Celsius so I let my girlfriend set the heat
settings to what “should be about right” for a cake. The cake mix is
finally inserted into the oven.

waited
We waited…

and waited
and waited…

exit cake

and I finally took the cake out of the oven with this nifty cake tin lifter when it looked right.

cake not done

My girlfriend poked a hole in the middle with a toothpick and it came out moist, so back to the oven it was…

devils food cake

I present to you…the final product! We had waited for about 15
minutes and took the cake back out again. My gf then proceeded to poke several
holes across the cake while laughing hysterically. My
cake…sabotaged… :p Oh, by the way, the crack in the middle is
apparently the result of taking it out before it was fully done and
putting it back in again. The temperature differential shock tends to
make it go that way.

devils food nitrous

The movie clip shows me eating the cake with some nitrous oxide,
er…I mean, some whipped cream. It should be noted that whipped cream
uses nitrous oxide (N20) as a propellant:

nitrous oxide

However, if you’re expecting to get recreational hits of nitrous off
a whipped cream bottle, you’re going to be very disappointed. It’s only
a small canister, and the dispensing system will produce whipped cream
no matter now tenderly you manipulate the nozzle to produce nitrous
oxide. You’re not going to get anywhere near recreational doses off
this, and it’s not for the lack of trying. I did, and the best I could
do was get a minute amount into my lungs and my exertions expended the
nitrous canister of the whipped cream container…which made it produce
sludge instead of whipped cream. Oops…my bad. I didn’t realize it had
such a small amount of nitrous in the bulb. Stick with nitrous
canisters and crackers and leave the whipped cream container alone. πŸ˜‰

devils food cake slice

Here’s a shot of a slice of The Devil’s Kiss with some…er, cream
sludge. It tasted pretty good actually, but it was a little too rich (I
think it was the oil). I’ll tell you something interesting…it seems
that some of the Hershey’s Kisses were preserved intact in the final
cake! The scotch did not shine through though, probably due to the
overpowering chocolate taste. Nevertheless, it was a great experiment
and it yielded a rather tasty cake. πŸ™‚

I had wanted to name it The Devil’s Kiss with Angel’s Cum on it, but
I didn’t think that would be a very appealing name for a cake so I’ll
settle with The (Drunk) Devil’s Kiss (unofficial name) or Devil’s Food
Cake with Hershey’s Kisses and whipped cream, for a more orthodox name.

Kenny Rogers Roasters – Kenny’s Home-Baked Fillet (White Combo Delight)

kenny rogers kl sentral

I went to the Kenny Rogers at KL Sentral with my gf this afternoon
(more about that later) and had the White Combo Delight meal, which
features Kenny’s 1/4 chicken, the home baked fillet, 3 side dishes of
your choice and a muffin at RM 22.90.

kenny white combo delight

Kenny’s Home-Baked Fillet is the Chinese New Year promotion (figured
it was since it had the “nian nian you yu” phrase on top) which is “a
succulent, firm textured fish fillet, baked with special blend of herbs
and spices, served with three choices of side dishes”.

lite easy menu

I chose the Garden Pasta Salad (“Spiral pasta, broccoli, capsicum,
carrot & onion in cheese and special Italian dressing”), Savoury
Rice (“Seasoned yellow rice enlivened with onion, carrot &
capsicum”) and Fresh Fruit Salad (“A medley of fresh mouth-watering
fruits”). I had the black pepper version for the chicken:

kenny rogers meal

This is the Real Life (TM) shot of the quarter black pepper chicken,
garden pasta salad, savory rice and fresh fruit salad (counter
clockwise from bottom).

Here’s the photo of the main feature – Kenny’s Home Baked Fillet:

kenny rogers fillet

To be honest, the fish was quite disappointing, certainly nothing to
write home about. I found it rather bland, and my gf concurs. Perhaps
the stronger black pepper chicken desensitized my palate and rendered
me unable to discern the subtle nuances of the herbs and spices infused
into the fillet. Or perhaps I should stop using pretentious
quasi-gastronomic words. πŸ˜‰

choc muffin

Here’s the chocolate muffin, lest it feels ignored and decides to run away with the spoon.

Nasi lemak with quail eggs

nasi_lemak_quail_eggs.jpg

Nasi lemak with quail eggs. Makes for a good dinner, especially with ayam goreng panas:

ayam_goreng_panas.jpg

Must be a drumstick though…gotta be that.

I have a feeling I’m starting to move away from my happy happy joy
joy blog posts to appeal to the masses with the obligatory “Thank you
please come again” polite reply for every comment into a somewhat
sarcastic and generally less palatable online personality. This may be
a permanent transfiguration or just a temporary phase, in the case of
the former, I shall join the ranks of jaded and old skool bloggers, in
the case of the latter, just bear with me. πŸ˜‰ I could manage that
emoticon so fear not, I think it’s the latter, so yeah, I shall be less
than my usual cheery (to you anyway) self for a while and sixthseal.com
would be back in force (or something to that effect) in due time!
Regardless, nasi lemak with quail eggs and steamy hot fried chicken
still makes good dinner.

“I’ll have breast meat with that, thanks.”

breast_incident.jpg

I went to take away some chicken rice just now and somehow got
breast meat in addition to the drumstick I requested. I don’t even like
breast meat. The incident happened when I squeezed through to the
cashier’s place. To do that, you had to go through the existing queue
for chicken rice. “Excuse me!” I said, and lifted my hands to utilize
the “wedge yourself through by force” technique and got to the
cashier’s. I started pulling out RM 1 bills from my wallet, when
suddenly, I felt someone staring at me. She was wearing office attire,
probably mid twenties, with…well, decent (for the lack of a better
word) assets for someone of her physical build.

The realization dawned upon me that in my attempts to navigate the
human maze in the cafeteria, I had inadvertently initiated
inappropriate physical contact between my left hand and the
abovementioned person’s mammary appendages for about 3 seconds. I
realized that my outer left hand had slid across the chest area of the
unfortunately positioned woman, thus affecting not just one, but both of the extrusions in question.

It must not have seemed like an accident to her, because the look on
her face could only be described as “consternation”. It wasn’t
“appalled”, thank goodness, nor was it “shocked”, just mere
“consternation”, with an unasked question hanging above her head.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to do that”, said I. “No, no, it’s okay”, said
she.

However, I noticed that she had her arms firmly crossed against her
breasts when I was about to exit the area, presumably to avoid a repeat
of the previous incident.

I walked out behind her, just in case. πŸ™‚

I can’t believe it’s not sushi!

genki_sushi_chef.jpg

This is a photo of a chef preparing sushi at Genki Sushi today.
Well, he’s assistant chef but anyway, the most important question
is…er, I forgot. Anyway, I ate at Genki Sushi today with a friend and
the photos will be up tomorrow and I will have to reply the comments
tomorrow during lunch hour too. I’m sorry, I’ve been saying this in
most of the recent posts, and it must be getting old.

However, I realized that tomorrow is Thursday and I’m flying to
Melbourne on Friday and I’ve not done all the things that I need to do
yet! There literally a shitload of things to arrange (the least of
which is the fact that I don’t have a “clean” bag and my laundry would
not be ready by Friday if the rain continues) before I go over and I
have to work on Friday, so everything has to be done by tomorrow (won’t
be sleeping then) so I can come back to work on Friday, pick up my
bags, take a taxi to KL Sentral and take the KLIA Express to KLIA. My
plane leaves at 9:20 pm (wtf, I thought it was a midnight flight) and I
finish work at 5:30 pm.

Bets on whether I make that flight or not comes with odds of 3:1,
and I’ve taken too many leaves so I don’t think I can take another one
on Friday without finding myself on the unemployment line. πŸ˜‰ I don’t
know, I’ll ask just for the sake of asking. Wish me luck ya, and
someone hire me if I get fired. :p

Mega Chicken Delice chicken sandwich @ RM 3.90

mega_chicken_delice.jpg
Ingredients: Fresh bread, fresh vegetables, spread, chicken slice, cheese, spices.

This is what I had for lunch…grabbed a sandwich from Gro-Shop, the
grocery shop at Wisma Antarabangsa (it’s interconnected to Kenanga
International).

groshop.jpg
Gro-Shop

I felt like eating a sandwich instead of rice and this one is pretty
good. It emphasizes fresh ingredients and I was not disappointed. The
bread was nice and soft and there’s a generous amount of egg and cheese
and a slice of deli chicken, all topped with a slathering of
mayonnaise. Here’s a close up:

Binge and Purge

bingepurge.jpg

I bought some dinner home because my gf went for dinner with her
dad. I got Nasi Briyani (with extra drum) and Ramly Double Beef Burger
Special. The nasi beriyani already had a chicken in it. I ate that plus
the sweet sauce drumstick and that pickle and also finished the burger.
I tried to throw up just now but failed. I threw up an impressive
amount of puke last night too. I think I will tonight as well, I tried
to, stuck my whole index finger down my throat but to no avail. I will
try again now. Binge and purge. I will reply the comments tomorrow,
sorry ya, need to throw up and probably lie down and pass out. Er…I
mean go to sleep. πŸ™‚

How I climbed the St John Cathedral bell tower and other short stories

Getting up close and personal with Mary Fatima.

st_john_tower.jpg

There is a mysterious upper level at St John’s Cathedral. I wasn’t
aware of it until a warden told us that there are more seats upstairs.

st_john_upper.jpg

Sure enough, there it was – an outcropping overlooking the ground level.

st_john_ladder.jpg

I was attracted to this ladder on both sides of the level.

ladder_climb.jpg

I peered up and it seemed to be the ladder for the bell towers.
Curiosity impelled me to brave the bird poo stained ladders and climb
to the top of the right one. The ladder goes up to a level overlooking
the book store. One of the attendants heard my less than subtle ascent,
peered up questioningly and frowned in my general direction.

bell_tower_journey.jpg

However, I was not to be dissuaded from my quest to the bell platform, so I scaled the next ladder, and then the next.

bell_tower_platform.jpg

Soon, I reached the last ladder leading up to the bell, which seems
to be sitting on top of a wooden support. I climbed up the last ladder
to present to you…

bell_tower_view.jpg

A view from the top. Wait ah, the bell photo is coming up. You can
actually fall into the book store if you wanted too, just keep right
while falling down and you’ll drop right through the top of the book
store. You might break a couple of bones and possibly injure something
other than books.

st_john_church_bell.jpg

Here is the ancient looking church bell. I suspect it’s not used
anymore due to the impressive layer of bird droppings on the stair
steps and railings. There is an inscription on the bell itself:

st_john_bell.jpg

The bell is called Mary Fatima.

Novo Millennio Ineunte

celebration_book.jpg

The wardens passed us this booklet today. It says:

Silver Jubilee of the Pontification of His Holiness Pope John Paul II
Eucharistic Celebration
10:30 am, Sunday 26th October, 2003
St. John’s Catheral
Kuala Lumpur

There is a typo on the glossy cover, if you haven’t noticed. It says
‘Catheral’ instead of ‘Cathedral’. I kinda had my own private pursuits
(the abovementioned journey to the bell) and also zoned out a bit so I
wasn’t sure what was going on but there was this scene at the end:

eucharistic_celebration.jpg

There were “light refreshments” served after the event at an ad hoc tent erected on the lawn after mass.

refreshment_tent.jpg

They were giving away cincau drink (without cin cau jelly)/lychee drink and curry puff/a slice of cake.

I like how they have these boiled quail eggs in the rice. Very nice indeed.

There was a Nasi Dalca selection beside it and I took another drumstick. It looked good in the gravy. This is my plate:

There was also a plate of sotong curry which we shared. It had large complete sotongs with everything intact.

St John’s Cathedral and CU There Cafe @ Petaling Street area

stjohn.jpg

It’s Sunday today and this is the first time in recent memory that
I’ve been to church. Granted, my eyes glazed over sometime during the
middle of mass, but anyway…:) I moved out of the hotel early this
morning and put my stuff at my gf’s place and now I’m updating at
Richard’s room. I’m bunking with him until the room vacancy at my gf’s
house opens up at the start of next month, about 7 odd days more.
Anyway, the mass was held at St. John Cathedral, somewhere around the
Kota Raya area as far as I could ascertain.

cucount.jpg

Well, I was with my gf, her brother (Richard) and her brother’s gf
(Alice). Mass was followed by lunch at CU There, somewhere near
Petaling Street. It was air conditioned and the interior and ambience
is interesting to say the least.

cuint.jpg

There is a wall filled with scribbles of love messages from couples
and the rest of the real estate is covered by posters of artists of all
sorts. There’s also a music area:

cumusic.jpg

and the toilets are covered with jokes…

cutoilet.jpg

I had the prawn steak (RM 7) because I was really interested in how they could come out with a prawn steak. This is the dish:

prawnsteak.jpg

Recombined prawn steak…that’s recombined prawn meat patties, my
friend. A steak produces expectations of a single piece of cut meat. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, here’s a photo of us:

cuall.jpg

From left: Louisa (my gf), Richard (my gf’s brother and my room mate
for the next week), Alice (my gf’s brother’s gf) and Huai Bin (me).

Later, we went to Sunway Pyramid, where there was dance performances
and two highly doubious Malaysian Book of Records entries. I got
pictures of everything, but those would be up tomorrow because I’m very
tired, as can be seen by my terse sentences. πŸ™‚ I’ll turn in early
tonight and wake up tomorrow for a whole new effort in sending out
resumes. Later.

sunwprev.jpg
This will be up tomorrow.

Oh yeah, just watched on Edisi Siasat about the Africans (Nigerians?
Afica is a continent…the reporters are no better than the people
saying Asians (a diverse classification which spans from India through
Hong Kong and down to Indonesia) is the source of trouble in a lot of
Caucasian countries) who started a bit of trouble at Jalan Alor at the
hawker food center…I’m not sure when that happened but me and my
digicam missed it. πŸ™ Not that there’s anything newsworthy unless shots
were fired, but still, it would make a good update. I won’t go into the
racial vilification and distrust this produces, I’m against that of
course (the expose ends with “Be carefull of people of African
descent”), but sixthseal.com is just about personal stuff, drugs (by
veritas) and news that I happen to witness. :p

One last thing, sorry about the photos being dark…I didn’t realize
it on my monitor (with big ass gamma), only realized it here. Will take
that into consideration in the future. Here at sixthseal.com, we always
aim to please. or something. πŸ˜‰ Nevermind me, I’m too relaxed right now.
