There are stalls selling fruits.

massage.jpg
There are massage parlors.

popular.jpg
There are large book stores.

water.jpg
There’s this strange vending machine selling water for 20 cents. I’ve
never seen it before. Very impressive and puzzling at the same time.

scrolls.jpg
There’s people selling drawings and wall scrolls.

tourist.jpg
There’s lots of tourists.

sleeping.jpg
There’s even people sleeping semi nude on pedestrian bridges.

airmatak.jpg
Air mata kuching – a refreshing cold drink for just 80 cents a bowl.

hprepair.jpg
I had to repair my cell phone coz the speaker wasn’t working…he
quoted RM 35, I said RM 30 and he said okay. Suspect it could have been
cheaper but it’s hard to bargain with a digicam strapped around you,
you look too much like a tourist – fair game. Highly recommended
though, fixed it in 15 minutes. Later, I found out that the speaker was
not working again so I went back and he opened everything up, changed
the mike and soldered everything back free of charge. Nice guy too.

dumpling.jpg
A dumpling store at petaling street.

dumplings.jpg
I got the largest one – RM 7.50 (!) for a dumpling.

dumplook.jpg
Here’s a closer look – it has large chicken pieces (with bone intact),
mushrooms, egg yolk, nuts and even mussels! Very filling too.

cendol.jpg
Cendol – a drink made with shredded ice and stuff.

powerbar.jpg
There was a PowerBar promotion booth beside the lifts at the hotel – bars for RM 5 and gels for RM 7.

Petaling Street – walk through.

Anyway, these are the set of photos I took around Petaling Street.
I’m sorry for not being able to answer the comments today, I have to
pack up everything, including my PC, coz I’m moving over to Richard’s
(who kindly offered to put me up for a week) early tomorrow morning. I
will update tomorrow and reply all the comments – thanks everyone, I
appreciate your feedback!

Petaling Street after midnight

Right. Ethanol induced hunger prompted me to go in search for food.
I called room service but unfortunately they were closed. I went down
and asked the receptionist:

hgorecep.jpg

where I could get food at this hour. She suggested Chinatown (I
assumed that is Petaling Street). Righty-o, off I went with of the two
things known as C2H5OH/C2H6O and C15H10CIN3O3 and found myself at
Petaling Street after a 15 minute walk which I couldn’t remember. Heck,
I wonder why I’m back at the hotel, I hardly remember leaving. πŸ˜‰

pstmidpu.jpg

Petaling St. was a bit deserted towards the back as you can see in
the photo above. It seems that most shops close up at around midnight,
if you squint a bit you can see the guy pulling his cart back home to
the right of the picture.

pstfront.jpg

The front bit is still quite populated though, but I went a bit back
to see if there’s anything interesting to eat and it seems that there’s
no smaller shops so I settled for fried hor fun (something like kueh
tiaw) to go.

Here’s a photo of the shop I went too, notice the guy giving the peace sign at the digicam while I was taking photos. πŸ™‚

pstmidta.jpg

Anyway, I got the hor fun and walked back to eat and now I’m here
updating again even though I’m very sleepy. Here’s a photos of the RM 5
fried hor fun:

pshorfun.jpg

It has seafood, chicken, beef, deep fried pork bits, cabbages and a generous helping of hot chilli sauce on the side.

This is not the okonomiyaki post, that will be up much later today.
Okay, now there’s really an unbearable wave of sleepiness…off I go,
I’ll reply later today when I wake up.

Durian season!

durians.jpg

The annual durian season seems to have started in Sibu. A friend of
my dad dropped by with a couple of durians. These are local ones, seems
unripe but it tasted great! Soft, creamy custardy texture, just the way
I like it. Photo story will be up later tonight (early morning
probably), applications for employment gets priority. πŸ™‚

What did I do yesterday?

Take Away Street

Hmm…lemme think. Just give me a minute here. πŸ™‚ Okay, the day started when a went for lunch with Daniel
[geocities.com]. A big thank you to him, he’s the reason why
sixthseal.com has photos again (albeit for a while, coz he’s going back
in a day). He has a digicam too (Sony DSC-F707) and I borrowed it to
take some photos, so yeah, photos are available for a short time. πŸ™‚

The interior.

Anyway, he told me of this place called TakeAway Street in Wisma
Sanyan where every main meal is just RM 1.50 and every drink is just RM
1. That was last month though, the prices have been raised since then.
I had the Taiwan Noodles (which tastes suspiciously like Maggie Mee
Curry Flavor) for RM 2.50, meat stuffed kompia with gravy for RM 0.50,
egg cooked in soy sauce (lu tang in Chinese, what’s the English
equivalent?) for RM 0.50 and kopi peng for RM 1.20.

tafood.jpg

My food posts are definitely not as good as mum mum
[blogspot.com], so if you’re interested in food, head over to Wena’s
site, it’s GREAT! Always makes me hungry, photos and descriptions of
all kinds of food. She’s from Kuching (about 400+ km from Sibu) and
I’ve lived there for 8 years total (7 during childhood, 1 in college)
and I visit very often so yeah, I’m familiar with most of the places
she mentions. Great food blog, go visit! I’ll like to think of her blog
as “The Best Food Related Blog in Malaysia”. On a narcissistic note,
and borrowing from Phua Chu Kang, I’ll like to think sixthseal.com is
the best drug related blog in Malaysia, Singapore and some say
Australia. πŸ˜‰

Terminator 3 – I took a shot of the screen inside the cinema.

Anyway, let’s see…after that I borrowed Daniel’s digicam to do a bit
of photography, as you can see from the photos of the Knuckles Soccer
photos below. A couple of us went to watch Terminator 3 later at night,
it was the 8:45 pm one, they only charge RM 5 on Wednesday. After that,
it’s off for drinks at SRC, the people I remember there (besides me) is
Alan, Bing Jong, Johnny, Daniel, Christopher, Niny, and Ing Tai. Hey, I
think I remembered, it’s easy to visualize the table and go
counter-clockwise. Heh. Er…not much was remembered after that due to my
excessive alcohol consumption to celebrate my results. So yeah, that’s
my day yesterday.

No photos!

fixcamin.jpg

My digicam died on me this afternoon. I went for dinner with my gf
just now at Premier Hotel (their buffet dinner is pretty good on
Saturday nights) but unfortunately, there aren’t any photos today
because my digicam is out of service. Anyway, I’ve passed it on to a
camera repair shop just now, and I’m expecting to have it back by noon
tomorrow, so all is good. It does feel weird not to have a digicam
handy – all ready to take photos should the opportunity arise, but oh
well, it’s only for a day. πŸ™‚

Teochew Roasted Meat Flat Mee

teokshop.jpg
Teochew Kampua Mee @ Central Market, Sibu

This is said to be the best kampua mee in Sibu. I went last night
with a couple of my buddies but I’ve been busy so I only posted it
today. This stall is on the second floor of Central Market and I’ve
been told it’s only open from 8 pm – 11 pm at night, except for
Sundays. 3 hours per day, and they have heaps of customers due to its
reputation so be prepared for a long wait. I think we had to wait more
than 30 minutes, which is a long time for kampua mee!

tkpplain.jpg
Teochew Kampua Mee (Plain)

Anyway, I thought it was okay, it’s good, but I’ve had better. :p I
had two bowls – one plain and one with soy sauce + chili sauce. The soy
sauce + chili sauce one is better, IMHO. The soup is great, I don’t
know what they put inside, but it’s different from the usual kam pua
soup. The meat is roasted (smoked?) pork, tastes slightly better than
the normal ones, but the noodles is helluva oily. The reason for the
long wait is not only coz of the many customers, but because they cook
each bowl separately, unlike other stalls who just chuck everything in.

Teochew Kampua Mee (Soy Sauce and Chili Sauce)

Hi, it’s me

I’ve been busy with assignments these few days (weeks?). Sleep
deprivation is fun. Watching the toilet bowl water do some fancy
fragment vector graphic effect before when you’re about to take a piss
is interesting indeed. Anyway, I still have some more assignments due
so here’s my (short) day in pictures:

Went to Caulfield to print and hand in one of my assignments. I saw this at the MONSU desk while binding the assignment:

freebatt.jpg

An assortment of free AA batteries in a box saying “Free batteries”.
Generics mostly, but there’s some Sony and Toshiba alkaline ones in
there too. Went to Coles after that to stock up on groceries. Of
course, when I say ‘groceries’, I really mean non essential food items.
=D

ttam198.jpg

Tim Tams are going for A$1.98 (usually A$2.57). The new batch has this promotion going on:

ttwish1.jpg

There’s a ticket inside with a nifty layer which you rub to reveal
what’s underneath. After a while, the dark layer forms again and hides
the underlying text. It’s like those novelty lighters with a dark
coating obscuring a model’s naughty bits until you apply heat to it.
Did I win?

ttwish2.jpg

Nope. It says “Second chance draw”. I can’t get a good picture coz the layer reforms really quickly.
