Nestle Trophy ice cream promotion contest

nestle promotion sibu

Nestle has a range of “premium” ice cream under the Trophy brand which is considered a poor man’s Magnum [sixthseal.com]. They are running a two day promotion at Wisma Sanyan in Sibu to promote the Trophy ice cream, in particular its latest strawberry flavored Trophy.

nestle promotion sibu ice cream

I was at the shopping mall with my gf just now and decided to get an Almond Choc Ace Trophy and the new strawberry flavored Trophy. The Trophy ice cream by Nestle is based on the concept of Magnum ice cream and comes with the cringe inducing tagline “You deserve a Trophy“. *groans*

nestle promotion sibu trophy

The promotion is anchored to an instant draw prize collection (or “Sure Win” as they so eloquently dub it) for every purchase of RM 5 worth of Nestle ice cream OR two Trophy ice creams. Our Trophy purchase entitles us to one “Lucky Dip”. I was so excited I nearly creamed my pants, pardon the pun.

nestle promotion sibu box

The list of prizes in the instant draw box starts from a Mountain Bike and ends with a Sarsi Frizz in descending order of monetary value. The last three items are Nestle ice cream products. The entire promotion boasts a payout amounting to the grand total of RM 1,000!!! Talk about big budget promotions!

nestle promotion sibu win

I wasn’t surprised when I stuck my hand into the “Lucky Dip” box and came up with Sarsi Frizz. The box probably has Sarsi Frizz printed on almost all of the little pieces of folded paper. It’s one of the lowest priced Nestle ice cream products – a frozen ice water stick vaguely tasting of sarsaparilla.

Oh well, it’s better than nothing…

(and the promotion DID keep its word about every instant draw being a sure winner)

P/S – My apologies about the sarcasm laden post. I just bought a Nintendo GameBoy Micro on an impulse and I can’t wait to check it out. I’m not a big fan of consoles or handhelds but it looks so amazingly small that I couldn’t help getting it. It’s cheap enough for impulsive purchases and yet packs enough value for a few hours of fun. Full review coming up soon on sixthseal.com. πŸ™‚

Levi’s Red Tab Jacket Lot # 71361

levis store sibu

I was walking around the shopping centres in Sibu today when I noticed that a Levi’s store has opened up in Wisma Sanyan. I’m in Sibu now coz I have a work related project to attend to tomorrow morning.

levis store sibu interior

I’m not usually inclined to go shopping and that wasn’t the agenda
when I drove out, but somehow, I ended up buying a whole lot of stuff.
I saw this Levi’s Red Tab Jacket that I liked instantly and it turned out to be a perfect fit so I got it.

levis store sibu red tab

There were Red Loop jeans but to be honest, I’m not
a big fan of Levi’s, preferring my denim to come from Quiksilver. The
jacket I got is made of a non-denim fabric that strikes the perfect
balance between insulating and comfort.

levis store sibu red tab jacket

This is the Levi’s Red Tab Jacket (Lot # 71361) that I got for RM
270. I like the slight weight it generates when it’s worn. It’s a great
jacket.

Louisa’s 24th @ Country Cafe, Sibu

country cafe music restaurant

Country Cafe Music Restaurant is an old high school
hangout that will always have a place in my heart. I used to go there
with my buddies when I was in Form Five and just hang out and try the
ever-changing huge menu that they had. It was nostalgic…

country cafe

I brought my girlfriend there last night and the familiar interior
greeted me, bringing back a rush of high school memories.
Unfortunately, although the interior looks pretty much the same (with
some renovations) the menu wasn’t…the place has undergone new
management and the menu that has us spoilt for choice has been trimmed
down into less than a couple of items…

cc wine cooler

I ordered a wine cooler (had another one later during the meal to
toast the old memories of Country Cafe where the emphasis was on food
instead of a football (soccer) hangout) and my gf opted for 7-Up.

cc beef chop

This is what I had for dinner – its beef chop. There really isn’t
much choice on the menu, unlike the previous management where sashimi,
tempura, cold noodles etc were introduced weekly.

cc chicken chop

My girlfriend had the chicken chop. To be fair, the food wasn’t that
bad. It’s apparently outsourced to another eatery and not the “New
Country Cafe” coz we had two different bills – one for food and the
other for drinks. The egg on top of the chicken and beef goes well with
the meat, but I was disappointed at the limited choice.

Happy Birthday Louisa!

Love always,

Sheraton Restaurant

sheraton restaurant

My mother-in-law to be had her birthday dinner at Sheraton Restaurant
in Sibu on Saturday night. Sheraton Restaurant is an eatery that’s been
around Sibu in one form or another – they recently moved into their own
building due to the high customer demand.

sheraton interior

The birthday dinner was a family event with about 10 people for a
dinner gathering. Sheraton has a nice and subtle interior (which is a
nice change from their previous occupancy). The restaurant is almost
always packed – it’s famous for their fish head curry. This is what we
had for dinner:

sheraton cucumber juice

The cup overfloweth (with cucumber juice)

sheraton egg dish

This is a Foochow tradition where whole eggs are boiled and then
deep fried before being cooked in chicken soup. It’s a must have for
birthdays (for Foochows anyway).

sheraton noodle dish

There was also a thin noodle dish (not quite rice vermicelli) that’s served at the same time as the egg dish.

sheraton first dishes

Here’s a closer look at the deep-fried boiled eggs soup dish and the noodles dish.

sheraton chinese pancakes

The next course is deep fried Chinese pancakes filled with savory meat.

sheraton chinese pancakes inside

It’s very nice – crispy and filling, best to eat while it’s still hot.

sheraton pork

One of the house specialties was served after that – its pork cooked
Chinese style over a simmering steel bowl perched precariously on top
of a flame served straight to the table.

sheraton vegetables

The next dish was vegetables (think it was asparagus) dipped in hot water and served straight.

sheraton fish

The mandatory fish dish came straight after that – the fish was
evenly sliced in half and the pieces cut into bite-sized manageable
bits arranged around it like a whole fish. Decorative slices of orange
peels were arranged around the dish – these are edible as well.

sheraton birthday

Happy Birthday!

Little Hanoi

little hanoi

Little Hanoi is a coffee shop that mushroomed up in place of another
coffee shop which has ceased operating some time ago. I just saw this
eatery when I came back to Sibu this time. I went there today with my
girlfriend for lunch. Little Hanoi serves Vietnamese food, with slight
alterations to suit local tastes.

little hanoi pho

This is their pho, which is made with hor fun. The dish is made with good broth (which IMHO dictates the taste of the pho) – clear and satisfying.

little hanoi lime

It is served with half a lime, the likes of which I’ve never seen
before…the patterns in the middle of the lime seems unfamiliar, or
maybe they just sliced the lime diagonally.

little_hanoi_pho_close.jpg

Here’s a closer look at the pho. The hor fun is soft, and the thinly sliced beef in the soup tastes tender too.

little hanoi beef noodles

This is Little Hanoi’s implementation of beef noodles – it comes with thickly sliced carrots and chunks of beef in a thick soup.

little hanoi sea salt

This one is served with half a lime and some sea salt, which goes nicely with the chunks of beef.

little hanoi beef noodles close

Here’s a closer look at the beef noodles…there’s some bean sprouts in there too, to counter balance the taste.

little hanoi spring roll

Finally, we ordered a side dish of deep fried spring rolls. The
coating on this is very unique, and this makes the texture interesting.

Little Hanoi may not be an authentic Vietnamese eating experience,
but it’s a welcome addition to Sibu’s relatively slow growing food
industry.

Hoi Fu Restaurant

hoi fu restaurant

My father celebrates his birthday today and also his retirement day
from the education sector. I’m glad for him coz working in that sector
is often unappreciated and hard work. Well, we went to Hoi Fu
Restaurant for some “home cooked” meals coz my dad has been eating at
restaurants constantly due to his farewell retirement gatherings.

dad bday fern

The first dish that came out is some of the largest ferns (?) I’ve
seen – it’s a staple over here, and the locals call it something that
sounds like “billion”.

dad bday mapo tofu

Ma po tofu (a spicy tofu dish) was the next item on the menu – it’s
great, most places skimp on the chilli to suit local tastes, but I like
my stuff to be hot, hot, hot so I’m glad they didn’t.

dad bday pork

Next, came the clay pot cooked pork leg – it’s salty and delicious,
very nice implementation by Hoi Fu Restaurant. This was the only dish
we didn’t manage to finish though – it’s a family affair, with just my
gf and my parents, and they’re not exactly big eaters.

dad bday prawns

We also ordered a side dish of buttered prawns. It’s not as good as the ones in Kuching, but it’s alright.

dad bday cod

Finally, what meal would be complete without the obligatory fish?
This is steamed cod and it was delicious! I always like the fish
steamed with soy sauce from Chinese restaurants.

dad bday dad mom

Happy Birthday Dad, and Happy Retirement! Now, it’s time for some long due and well deserved rest. πŸ™‚

Coconut chendol special

coconut chendol special

I saw this decadently designed dessert and the picture just called
out to me…it felt like the photo was compelling me, saying “Order
me…I am a big bowl of coconut and chendol goodness and you’ll love
me…”

coconut chendol special coconut

…and love it I did. πŸ˜‰ The whole concoction is made of a plethora
of ingredients – chendol, yam pieces, sweet potato, sweet bean, sweet
corn, and others, all stuffed into a real coconut with coconut juice
and flesh and topped with evaporated milk. It was over the top.

coconut chendol special close

Here’s a closer look at the ingredients contained inside the Coconut
chendol special. It’s well worth the RM 3.50. There are a lot of
unorthodox ingredients that belong better in a bubur cha cha mix e.g.
the sweet potato and yam, but the coconut implementation is rather
unorthodox too. It’s nice to drink the slightly tart juice of the
coconut mixed with the classic chendol milky sweet taste while
harvesting flesh from the coconut to eat.

coconut chendol special inside

Coconut chendol special tastes like chendol crossed with bubur cha
cha and given a twist with real coconut juice and flesh. It’s amazing
that no one has thought of this before. It gets two thumbs up from me.

Sibu’s famous kompia

sibu kompia dry

Sibu is well known for kompia as the birthplace of kompia began here. Kompia or kom pia
(literally baked biscuit) is a uniquely Sibu based product. There are
several different implementations of kompia, the most basic being just
the baked pastry without filling.

sibu kompia wet

However, the most popular implementation is arguably the meat filled
kompia soaked in meat gravy. It usually goes for about RM 0.50 per
piece. Different people prefer different variants, but the only type
I’ll eat is the gravy soaked meat stuffed kompia.

I like to soak the kompia in the meat gravy for a long time till
it’s all soggy before eating the whole soggy mess of bread and meat and
gravy. It’s like a salty Tim Tam Slam, Sibu style. πŸ˜‰
