Nachos and beer @ Lots of Love Affection (Lola Lounge)

lola lounge kl

Lola Lounge is located in the heart of the clubbing district of KL and it’s an acronym for Lots of Love Affection as the purple neon sign shows. Lola Lounge plays chill out music and is based on the open al fresco area concept.

lola lounge kl nachos

I met up with Larry [blogspot.com] who opened up another one of Danny’s All American Gourmet Hot Dogs franchise there (bringing the total to three) and he was kind enough to cook up two plates of nachos with his famed chili con carne. Thanks for the nachos and beer!

Cheers!

Dining at Zen, Travillion

zen travillion

Zen is a sister establishment to MC3 (the club) and has always been a chill out place to its counterpart (albeit with a liquor license). I didn’t even know they served food there until it was suggested that we go to Zen so we can eat AND drink since The Junk and bla bla bla wasn’t open yet.

zen travillion menu

Zen has a menu that lists a limited but well rounded repertoire of local and western specialties. The cocktails, beer, and wine list overwhelm the food list (which spans but two pages) but I heard the chef was sourced from a well known international hotel chain.

zen travillion spaghetti

Spaghetti Bolognese
RM 13.80
It tastes like home made spaghetti with the essentials – minced meat, a tomato based sauce and grated parmesan cheese. It’s good.

zen travillion red death

Red Death
RM 38.80
Vodka, Southern Comfort, Gin, Grand Marnier, Lime Cordial, Grenadine, Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice.
This is Fiona’s drink.

zen travillion screaming multiple orgasm

Screaming Multiple Orgasm
RM 25.80
Vodka, Kahlua, Amaretto, Bailey’s, Milk.
This is Cherie’s drink. It has milk so it’s healthy.

zen travillion drink get fucked

Drink & Get Fucked
RM 35.80
Malibu, Southern Comfort, Sambuca, Cointreau, Triple Sec, Bacardi 151, Vodka, Amaretto, Lime Juice, Lime Cordial, Salt.
This is my drink. Damn power, I tell you. πŸ˜‰

zen travillion dusk

This is a view of Travillion at dusk. It’s a strange sight for me, it gives me a totally different perspective as I’ve only gone to Travillion at night…

All Stars Sports Cafe review

all stars cafe

All Stars Sports Cafe is a sports themed restaurant and pub located in Mid Valley Megamall. It also has sports memorabilia and plasma TV’s dotted throughout the place tuned to satellite/cable sports channels.

all stars rock climbing

The restaurant presents itself with a life-sized rock climbing figure hanging from an outcrop on top of the dining area in front. There are also various sports related autographed photos and posters adorning the walls.

all stars back

All Star Sports Cafe also has a pool room and seating arrangements at the back of the restaurant (or front if you walk in via Mid Valley Megamall). The place serves alcohol and has an emphasis on western food, but also a menu with eastern cuisine.

all stars beer

Maisel’s Weisse (Dunken) beer (RM 26). This imported beer is served from a 0.5 liter glass beer flask that pours into a perfect 0.5 liter glass. The dark beer tastes sweet, with a strong malt aftertaste – it tastes like Guinness Malta.

all stars beer bread

The beer comes with a serving of bread – hot buns with a German butter and a knife to butter it with. I found that rather odd.

all stars four seasons platter

Four Seasons Platter
RM 40
The ultimate snack! Combining the unique tastes of Honey Crab Balls, Soya Spring Roll, Hong Kong Sharksfin Egg and assorted Vegetables with Prawn.

all stars crab

This is the first entry in the Four Seasons Platter appetizer – the plate is HUGE and long, easily occupying two tables. It’s crab meat and some other stuff wrapped in a roll.

all stars prawns

This is the second feature of the Four Seasons Platter – prawns with sweet mayo sauce. It’s the best part of the platter.

all stars rolls

The third component of the platter is deep fried soya spring rolls. It’s not that great.

all stars chicken

This is the fourth part of the Four Seasons Platter – chicken. It’s just boneless chicken, but it’s very well flavored. Nice.

all stars salmon

Grilled Norwegian Salmon
RM 32.50
Imported fresh Norwegian salmon fillet served with ratatouille and crusted potato.

all stars salmon dish

The salmon was cooked to perfection – pretty in pink!

all stars sandwich

Grilled Turkey Ham Cheese Sandwich
RM 13.50
Toasted sandwich with ham, turkey slices and cheese.

all stars sandwich dish

It’s a good club-type sandwich, filling and not too painful for healing tongue piercings to chew. πŸ˜‰

all stars surf turf

Surf n Turf
RM 42.50
Our petite sirloin steak and a big juicy tiger prawn, topped with home made garlic sauce.

all stars surf turf dish

This dish is really good – it’s a medium rare sirloin steak served with a large tiger prawn on top, allowing the prawn juices to seep into the steak. The garlic sauce goes very well with this unusual pairing, bringing out the best in both the seafood and the meat.

all stars eeva cherie

I was at All Stars Sports Cafe with Cherie and Eeva…

all stars midvalley

…and then all three of us got lost while stoned in Mid Valley. πŸ˜‰

Chili's made me miss my flight from KLIA

chilis miss flight

I missed my flight back to Kuching due to an unfortunate incident at Chili’s – we thought it would be a good idea to have drinks there before we went to the airport (KLIA). The flight was at 10:15 pm and we were still at MidValley Megamall (have been staying in the Boulevard studio suites for the past few days) and we dropped by Chili’s at 9 pm.

chilis triple play platter

TRIPLE PLAY
RM 21.95
Delicious Chicken Crispers(r), mouth-watering Boneless Buffalo Wings and incredible Southwestern Eggrolls. Served with dipping sauces.

chilis molten chocolate cake

MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKE
RM 19.35
Warm chocolate cake with chocolate fudge filling. Topped with vanilla ice cream under a crunchy chocolate shell.

…and we ordered Chambord(r) 1800 Margarita (RM 28.95), a Mudslide (RM 15.90) and two pints of Tetley’s draft beer (RM 25 per pint) to wash down the starter and dessert and before we knew it, it was 9:30 pm.

Thus, I’ll be staying in KL until Tuesday night on my own expense. Tuesday is a holiday anyway… πŸ˜‰

Little Penang Kafe @ Midvalley Megamall

little penang kafe

little penang kafe is a rather large eating
establishment in Midvalley Megamall – which doesn’t lead itself to this
impression at first glace. The place actually has two spacious areas on
the sides (hidden from view) and an elevated eating area with a view
outside the mall, and another dining area on top of that. It can accommodate more people than the first impression gives…

little penang kafe red ruby

This is Red Ruby (RM ?) a dessert I ordered – it’s
concocted of sweet evaporated milk, coconut milk, red colored jelly,
and jackfruit in shaved ice. It’s good stuff…the local tropical fruit
gives this dessert a great twist.

little penang kafe mee

I also ordered Penang Hokkien Mee (RM 9) and was
surprised to see that it came in a SOUP! It seems that Penang Hokkien
Mee is a soup based dish instead of a dry noodle dish like the KL style
Hokkien Mee. This one from little penang kafe has a lot of large prawns
in it and it tastes great! Spicy.

little penang kafe rojak

This is Penang style rojak (again) that we shared. It’s RM 7 and it tastes like rojak.

little penang kafe napkin

Little Penang Kafe is a nice place for hawker style food in a mall
(which defeats the whole concept of hawker food, but I digress). A lot
of people seem to like it anyway, the place was packed when we arrived
there just now and customers kept on streaming in. That’s gotta say
something…and there are photos of the Agong’s wife and Dr. Mahathir
patronizing the outlets and that probably says something as well (or
not).

Anyway, I’m a little bushed today due to waking up at 3:35 am in the
morning to catch my flight to KL. I was sedated, stoned and drunk last
night too, so congrats to Cherie and Valerine on actually managing to
get me drunk. πŸ˜‰

Thanks for the beer Cherie and thanks for the Kent MINTEK 1 from Thailand, Val!

OK, I can’t think straight right now, so I shall consume some DF-118
kindly furnished by the clinic opposite my office in KL and go to
sleep. I have another appointment tomorrow morning. Later…

Tuah Baker – Hot from oven

tuah baker

I was walking through Sarawak Plaza half stoned (okay, totally stoned) when I noticed an opening sign for Tuah Baker
with the tantalizingly munchies inducing quote “Good bread is the most
fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh
butter, the greatest of all feasts.”

tuah baker bakery

The sweet aroma of freshly baked bread ala Rotiboy steered my senses
to their booth in the middle of the food court – the smell of the
piping hot baked goods was strong enough to overpower all the other
proprietor’s offerings in the food court. Tuah Baker – Hot from oven is
heavily inspired by Rotiboy’s concept – except instead of the coffee
cream bun, they also have a chocolate cream bun.

tuah baker buns

The buns go for RM 1.60 each and there are no discounts for more
than one purchase, unlike Rotiboy (which I’m comparing this bakery with
due to the remarkable similarity in concept). It was timely on our
behalf that we got there just as the goods came out from the oven, so
we got the only kind of bread one should eat – piping hot, almost
tongue scalding. πŸ˜‰

tuah baker bag

I got one coffee bun and one chocolate bun and would have got more,
except they’ll have gotten cold by the time I’ve gotten around to the
third one. This is what the coffee bun looks like – the buns all come
in a brown paper bag, except this one doesn’t have any bakery insignia
on it. The buns are finally put into the paper bag and “baked” for a
short period – so the paper bag feels toasty as well. πŸ™‚

tuah baker bun

The buns are warm and crispy – there’s nothing like the remarkable
aroma of baked bread smelling of freshly brewed coffee with a crispy
crust around a wonderfully soft and fluffy bun. One of my friends,
being unfamiliar with Rotiboy products, remarked: “This tastes like
cake!”

Tuah Baker only sells the fresh from the oven coffee and chocolate
buns and it’s best to get them while a fresh batch is out of the oven.

bla bla bla … restaurant review

bla bla bla restaurant

bla bla bla… restaurant is a relatively new
eating establishment that opened up in Kuching. It has a purplish pink
neon sign with a speech bubble around the restaurant’s name. It looks
like a small place but it’s actually 180 meters inside!

bla bla bla bridge

The interesting bit about bla bla bla restaurant is that there is a
water walkway/bridge with “stepping stones” which you have to pass
through in order to enter the restaurant. It kinda screens the patrons
a bit, coz you have to be at least reasonably sober to navigate
through, ya know. πŸ˜‰

bla bla bla water

The square block bridge is also where the eating establishment
branches into the upstairs dining area or the al fresco seating areas
to the back. There are goldfish swimming around in the flowing water if
you look close enough.

bla bla bla produce

Bla bla bla restaurant has a great ambience with the water features
and other well placed decors like this great platter of fresh produce…

bla bla bla futon

There is a futon mound where you can relax and have a couple of
drinks coz you can get rather thirsty after saying the restaurant’s
name a couple of times. πŸ˜‰

bla bla bla green walk

There is a second water walkway with lush greenery that leads to the
end of the long 180 meter dining area. The place feels like a lush
tropical paradise with the generous plant life placed around the area.

bla bla bla roof

There are chandeliers and (another) interesting thing about bla bla bla restaurant is the retractable roof on top.

bla bla bla long

The narrow aisle is nicely arranged with tables for groups on one
side and tables for couples of the other side so there’s room to move
in the middle. The interior design is amazing.

bla bla bla margarita

I had a couple of margaritas (RM 18) which came with the signature pandan leaf that this place serves with most drinks.

bla bla bla mussels

This is the spicy mussels (RM 20). It came in a huge platter and it tastes great!

bla bla bla ostrich

This is the ostrich roll (RM 22) which comes with a morsel of battered ostrich meat on a flat roll.

bla bla bla lamb

This is the lamb shank (RM 23) which came with a cutting knife and serving fork. It’s tender and delicious.

bla bla bla prawns

This is the cashew nut prawn (RM 28), a decadent serving of HUGE prawns (it’s gigantic, actually) with mayo. This is easily the best part of the meal.

bla bla bla group

L-R: John [blogspot.com], Huai Bin (me), Ericka, Sebastian, Kenny [kennysia.com].

bla bla bla … restaurant is a great place to have dinner. It opens till late and the ambience and food is great.

…and admit it, you love the name too. πŸ˜‰

Louisa’s 24th @ Country Cafe, Sibu

country cafe music restaurant

Country Cafe Music Restaurant is an old high school
hangout that will always have a place in my heart. I used to go there
with my buddies when I was in Form Five and just hang out and try the
ever-changing huge menu that they had. It was nostalgic…

country cafe

I brought my girlfriend there last night and the familiar interior
greeted me, bringing back a rush of high school memories.
Unfortunately, although the interior looks pretty much the same (with
some renovations) the menu wasn’t…the place has undergone new
management and the menu that has us spoilt for choice has been trimmed
down into less than a couple of items…

cc wine cooler

I ordered a wine cooler (had another one later during the meal to
toast the old memories of Country Cafe where the emphasis was on food
instead of a football (soccer) hangout) and my gf opted for 7-Up.

cc beef chop

This is what I had for dinner – its beef chop. There really isn’t
much choice on the menu, unlike the previous management where sashimi,
tempura, cold noodles etc were introduced weekly.

cc chicken chop

My girlfriend had the chicken chop. To be fair, the food wasn’t that
bad. It’s apparently outsourced to another eatery and not the “New
Country Cafe” coz we had two different bills – one for food and the
other for drinks. The egg on top of the chicken and beef goes well with
the meat, but I was disappointed at the limited choice.

cc louisa love

Happy Birthday Louisa!

Love always,
HB

Sheraton Restaurant

sheraton restaurant

My mother-in-law to be had her birthday dinner at Sheraton Restaurant
in Sibu on Saturday night. Sheraton Restaurant is an eatery that’s been
around Sibu in one form or another – they recently moved into their own
building due to the high customer demand.

sheraton interior

The birthday dinner was a family event with about 10 people for a
dinner gathering. Sheraton has a nice and subtle interior (which is a
nice change from their previous occupancy). The restaurant is almost
always packed – it’s famous for their fish head curry. This is what we
had for dinner:

sheraton cucumber juice

The cup overfloweth (with cucumber juice)

sheraton egg dish

This is a Foochow tradition where whole eggs are boiled and then
deep fried before being cooked in chicken soup. It’s a must have for
birthdays (for Foochows anyway).

sheraton noodle dish

There was also a thin noodle dish (not quite rice vermicelli) that’s served at the same time as the egg dish.

sheraton first dishes

Here’s a closer look at the deep-fried boiled eggs soup dish and the noodles dish.

sheraton chinese pancakes

The next course is deep fried Chinese pancakes filled with savory meat.

sheraton chinese pancakes inside

It’s very nice – crispy and filling, best to eat while it’s still hot.

sheraton pork

One of the house specialties was served after that – its pork cooked
Chinese style over a simmering steel bowl perched precariously on top
of a flame served straight to the table.

sheraton vegetables

The next dish was vegetables (think it was asparagus) dipped in hot water and served straight.

sheraton fish

The mandatory fish dish came straight after that – the fish was
evenly sliced in half and the pieces cut into bite-sized manageable
bits arranged around it like a whole fish. Decorative slices of orange
peels were arranged around the dish – these are edible as well.

sheraton birthday

Happy Birthday!

Thyme’s Continental Cuisine review

thymes continental cuisine

Thyme’s Continental Cuisine is one of the
relatively new eating establishments to hit the scene. Thyme’s
Continental Cuisine is located at Chonglin Park and the previous lot
was occupied by a dangdut pub before Thyme’s took over.

thymes initial d

There are several sections in Thyme’s Continental Cuisine – there’s
an al fresco seating area to the front, a shaded patio with a juice and
coffee bar and the air conditioned interior. I noticed an Initial D
promotional poster and asked about it – the proprietor told me that
they have a promotional tie in with Star Cineplex.

thymes interior

Anyway, back to Thyme’s, the interior is a nicely decorated area
with subdued lighting. I’ve seen this place at night and I’ve always
thought the lighting is nice, if anything. Thyme’s Continental Cuisine
serves continental fare – there’s pasta, salads, various cuts of
steaks, club sandwiches and pizzas.

thymes pepsi

Intrigued by the Initial D The Movie promotional tie in, I ordered the Initial D Set Menu 1
(RM 25). It consists of miso soup, 86-Burger, tiramisu and a Pepsi. I
wanted to order Thyme’s Tempura Prawn Burger too, but the waiter
discreetly informed me that the “86-Burger” (as in AE-86 of the hottest
current franchise) is the exact same thing as the Thyme’s Tempura Prawn
Burger.

thymes miso soup

This is the miso soup which came out first…it has that slight
cloudy-sediment formation that I associate with miso soup but seems to
have an alien ingredient (at first look) inside – bean sprouts!
Fortunately, it was just remnants from last night’s visual…er,
discrepancies (review coming up). It isn’t bean sprouts but wonderfully
soft small capped mushrooms. The miso soup also has shrimps inside, a
very nice touch, taste wise.

thymes initial d 86 burger

Next up, came the main course, which is the 86-Burger a.k.a. Thyme’s Tempura Prawn Burger.
πŸ˜‰ The menu insert for Thyme’s Tempura Prawn Burger describes it as a
Tempura Prawn Burger with cheese and tonkatsu sauce served with Freedom
fries (kidding, it says French fries) and coleslaw. I like the
attention to detail in the 86-Burger – there are two wooden skews
tipped with colored foil to “hold” the burger in place and the coleslaw
is sprinkled with sultanas, providing a sweet twist.

thymes tempura prawn burger

Here’s a peek under the skirts of the 86-Burger – there are generous
amounts of large battered tempura prawns but I think the machine is
leaking tonkatsu oil…it can be toned down a little.

thymes pizza

I also ordered a pizza – this is The Thyme’s Pizza
(RM 17) which was recommended to me as the flagship of their pizza
line. It contains turkey ham, crab meat, mushrooms, pineapple and
chicken pepperoni. It’s an authentic Italian style flat crust pizza.

thymes pizza crust

The flat pizza was baked perfectly too, it comes highly recommended from me, but be prepared to wait.

thymes sundae

Unfortunately, the tiramisu was finished so they offered me a sundae
as a replacement dessert. I moved to the patio outside for dessert and
ordered a Mocha. The sundae has slightly salty batter coated peanuts,
which I found to be an interesting choice to implement in a sundae.
It’s unusual but surprisingly came out well.

thymes mocha

I also managed to chat with the very hospitable Mr Chan, who is the
proprietor, over a mug of Mocha. I asked him about the Initial D
promotional tie in with The Star and he kindly gave me a ticket for the
Initial D movie when it opens in theaters and gave me a good discount
on my bill too.

thymes initial d movie tickets

This is the Initial D movie pass that is valid at Star Cineplex.
This is one movie I’m looking forward to watching. Thyme’s Continental
Cuisine has a nice range of continental cuisine that will not
disappoint you. The food is affordable and the ambience is nice. It
comes highly recommended from me.
