italy

Italy. It’s the birthplace of the Mafia, Vespa and pasta. Hey, that sorta rhymes! ;)

I’m kidding, most people would think of something like Venice for example…the fabled city of romance where countless have fallen in love (though hopefully not through the canals filled with water that counts for streets over there).

The foot kicking the ball is actually a very nice place.

vinos

It’s a sophisticated city with a lot of cultural differences that you’ll only experience when you go there. It’s little things like how Northern Italy (still) thinks of Southern Italy as a bunch of uncouth people.

(Please don’t whack me, I don’t want to sleep with the fishes, a rather drunk guy in a pub told me that while I was backpacking Europe)

I’m into history and culture and during the last trip I actually met someone who fought in the war. Don’t ask me for which side, but it enlightened me that the Axis powers were Germany, Japan and Italy. I’ve always thought it was France. /history fail

war

It just goes to show that sometimes you have to actually experience to the country – not as a tourist, insulating yourself from the outside world by staying at multinational premium hotel chain which feels the same any country you go and not venturing out after that.

I do concede that the reception staff in Europe is quite pleasing to the eyes though. ;)

staff

However, if you step out of your comfort zone (and that swimming pool which is also available at your country of origin) and visit the places where the locals hang out, you’ll be rewarded with a lot of interesting bits of knowledge.

Of course, I’m not asking you to actually head to the seediest and poorest sections of town (even the locals avoid that) and granted, there would be times when you would have abuse flinged at you by the misguided youth and even have to extricate yourself from potentially dangerous and escalating situations.

graffitti

I have a story about that last bit actually, but it happened in London. Heh.

Well, the point is, it’s a great opportunity to travel and visit places you’ll normally not be able to…and as a cherry on top, won’t it be great if it’s all expenses paid? ;)

launch

That’s where RHB Now comes in!

italia mania launch

I just went to the launch and found out some really fun things about the Italia Mania game. It’s a lot of fun, having played it myself!

pizza

There was good (Italian) food, Vespas and a great big canopy at Ciao Restaurant in town. Lots of pizzas too, which I found very apt considering the nature of the app/game.

italia mania game

Just make any transaction online or on your cell phone/tablet with a minimum of RM 30 (your various monthly bills probably costs more than that) and you’ll see a button aptly called:

italia mania

Play the game and collect as many Star Points as you possibly can!

italia mania rules

You’ll be making a pizza – here are the rules.

making pizza

It’s basically a game where you match the ingredient showing on top with the ones available in the side and drag and drop it onto the raw pizza dough. See that mushroom I’m supposed to put on top of my pizza?

my pizza

It’s surprisingly fun, I was there for a long time trying to beat my own scores. Heh.

star points

The people with the most Star Points each week and month will get rewarded with awesome prizes!

vespa gts300

You’ll stand a chance to win weekly and monthly prizes in addition to the grand prize – which are 5 x Vespa GTS 300 scooters. Guess what the monthly prizes are?

3 x trip to Italy for 2

That’s for the players with the top three highest Star Points each month. As a bonus, the top players who have accumulated the highest Star Points throughout the campaign will win the Vespas! There’s also 5 x RM 100 cash weekly prizes. Head on to RHB Now for more details!

playing game

I suggest you go the Venice route if you bring your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband/It’s Complicated (TM). ;)

1. Hung out with my mom

food singapore

She’s doing another course of chemotherapy and we’re here for her. My dad flew in too and we’ll usually walk to Hola and eat there. Cheap and decent food. The caterers (old skool Tiffin carriers) come weekday nights.

My mom eats separately; she still can’t stand a lot of food, not even the smell of it. That’s her hiding in the room coz she’s so nauseous from the chemo.

2. Went to church

bedok methodist church

Took a cab to Bedok Methodist Church. Service is familiar but the praise and worship had an unusual twist – women dressed in traditional Chinese garb were dancing and twirling long silk ribbons. How I wish I managed to take a photo…

Got an EZ-Link card so I could use the MRT, bus and pay for food and groceries at places which accepts it.

3. The Gospel of Pool

church pool

Poster stuck beside the pool table at church. Words fail me. Sometimes a cue is just a cue. smirk

Mom got temporarily better and asked me to get her a Mocha soy ice blended drink. I bought it and she had a sip and promptly got sick again.

4. Salted egg yolk mooncakes

mini mooncakes

Dad got this from Sibu. It’s really quite good, there’s an entire salted egg yolk inside that’s almost the size of the puff pastry.

I ate all of them. Heh.

5. Grocery shopping

singapore grocery shopping

Got soy milk for my niece. She’s allergic to nuts, gluten, and most other things. This is the brand that we know doesn’t have any additives or traces of abovementioned. Also got reacquainted with the same brand of cigarettes I smoked last time I was here.

Middle of the night scare from my niece’s talking chair.

6. Timbre @ The Substation

timbre pizza buffulo wings

Lovely watering hole at 45, Armenian Street with live bands playing every day of the week. You can text song requests in for them to perform. Fiona recommended the Timbre Buffalo Wings – love the hot sauce and nuts topping but a tad overcooked for me. They do good pizzas too – got a half and half with Goodfellas and 53A. They’re both names of bands playing there.

Here’s a cover of Oasis’ Stand by Me.

7. Left my keys with Fiona

timbre substation singapore

Had a couple of drinks and hung out at Timbre. I put my sister’s condo keys and tag card in her bag earlier that night (tend to chuck my stuff in her tote due to lack of pocket space, thanks Fiona) and forgot to get it back from her. I only realized after I got back and couldn’t go in. Went back to her place to get it.

It’s a good thing we live near each other. Heh.

cheesie

Cheese – milk’s leap towards immortality – Clifton Fadiman

pizza hut extreme cheesy 6

A lot of people consider cheese to be an American invention due to the mass proliferation of heavily proceeded cheddar cheese slices. Others think cheese is of French origin coz they produce a lot of gourmet cheeses. However, the truth is cheese was discovered much longer than that. Think BC. Cheese was probably first made way before 2,000 BC.

pizza hut pbd

I love cheese. I used to be able to whip up a quick breakfast in minutes…with cheese of course. However, I just don’t have the time to cook right now so I jumped at the chance when Pizza Hut invited me to taste their new Extreme Cheesy 6 Pizza at Pusat Bandar Damansara last Friday. I love how they always come out with new pizzas – I was at their Fish King Pizza launch a couple of months back too.

me wei zhi

The Extreme Cheesy 6 as exactly six types of cheeses in their pizza. It goes well with my blog URL. smirk

The cheeses in question are:

say cheese

Cheddar
Classic delicate taste
Mozzarella
Creamy and soft
Parmesan
Flavorful and savory
Monterey Jack
Zesty and nutty
Provolone
Full-bodied and slightly tart
Romano
Hearty taste

The Extreme Cheesy 6 Pizza can be ordered just like that (with cheese) or with your favorite topping. You can choose from Cheesy Hawaiian, Cheesy Pepperoni or Cheesy Chicken but my favorite was the pure cheese pizza.

pizza hut extreme cheesy 6 pizza hawaiian

I tried all four variants, which considerably tested my stomach capacity. They each have their own strengths; it’s just what type of topping you prefer.

Pizza Hut was too generous with their food – side orders of chicken wings…

There’s also a contest for all you bloggers out there. The Extreme Cheesy 6 Pizza Contest runs until 16 November and is open to all Nuffnang bloggers. Just write a creative and interesting post with the theme “Why You Love Pizza Hut’s 6 Cheese Extreme Pizza” and take lots of photos with the pizzas. You’ll also need to name all the cheeses (refer to above ;)) and end the blog post with “I’m crazy about Cheeeeeese!“.

6-Cheese-Poster

There’s exactly 6 (six, enam, liu) e’s in that last line. The top 5 winners get RM 2,000 cash which is pretty good so it might be time to get cracking. :)

thumbdrive

As usual, the hospitality from Pizza Hut was awesome! We all got thumb drives, notebooks and a voucher to dine with 6 (how apt) people for free! Thanks to Mr Low Kang Moon and Nor Aziani Azizan for having us! :)

It was a cheesy-licious dinner!

chef ismail

I went to the High 5 Bread Town last week for a cooking session with none other than Chef Ismail himself!

One clue that this isn’t going to be your regular boring cooking demonstration is when Chef Ismail gave the cue for heart thumping music to play and got us to exercise…with High 5 bread as “weights”. I got so into it that my adrenaline was pumping like a fireman attempting to put out a 5 story blaze. Lame analogy but it’s either this or something NSFW. smirk

play dough

Anyway, we started off the session by kneading and molding fresh dough and making shapes with it. It’s like playing with Play Doh! I attempted to make a heart shaped one while my teammates went for abalone and a vaguely phallic looking thing that she twisted so hard it fell on the floor. Heh!

baking class

It’s a good thing that wasn’t for eating though – it’s for getting a feel (pun intended) for the high quality dough that High 5 uses for its bread.

coffee bread

Steaming hot coffee with slices of soft and fluffy High 5 bread was served to give us an experience of dipping the freshly baked bread into coffee.

coffee dunk

This is a breakfast staple for a lot of Malaysians on the go. It sure brings back those childhood memories!

ceo

After a short speech by Dato’ Jackson Tan, the Group Managing Director of Silver Bird Group Bhd (yes, it’s the same company that makes those delicious cakes) we donned our aprons and got into the gist of it.

ingredients

The proper cooking session started with the Mini Pizza. You can choose either wholemeal or white bread and chuck it in the oven while waiting for it to heat up to golden brown.

oven

Chef Ismail here shows us how to do it. He had his own special tomato base made with plum tomatoes, diced onions, chopped garlic, chopped parsley, thyme, oregano, tomato paste, black pepper and olive oil.

mini pizza

I made mine with extra tomato base (which we nicked from the good chef’s table) on High 5 wholemeal bread with half covered with chicken sausages and the other half with onions. I also added some diced capsicum and topped it off with grated mozzarella cheese and a sprinkling of chopped parsley.

This was sent to the oven and after a couple of minutes…

mini pizza cooked

WALLAH!

It tasted really good, and I didn’t regret using the wholemeal bread as the base as it provides that extra texture to the thing.

curry puff roll

Next up is Sardine Curry Puffs. Okay, this one ups the ante a little since it requires motor coordination skillz and a bit of expertise.

curry puff fill

Chef Ismail made it look easy and I was determined to make this one come out right.

curry puff seal

I opted for High 5 white bread this time and used a rolling pin to thoroughly FLATTEN the slice of bread. You need to make the bread into pastry. I didn’t have the right technique apparently, since Chef Ismail had to come over and teach me how to really work that bread into a 1 mm pastry like base.

curry puff flatten

Now comes the tricky part – you shouldn’t overfill the the curry puffs. After cutting off the crust, you put some filling into the curry puff before using a mixture of flour and water to seal off the curry puff. I applied the flour paste liberally – on the sides and to the entire other half of the slice of bread before rolling it up and submerging it into hot oil.

hot oil

I am pleased to report that my Sardine Curry Puff turned out golden brown and tasty to boot!

curry puff bite

The last recipe we did was High 5 Bread Tuna Canapés. Canapés, for the uninitiated, is another word for the little morsels of food you see served at atas functions with champagne. As soon as Chef Ismail went into the part about being sophisticated while eating canapés, mine promptly flew out of my fingers and went God-knows-where. FML. >.<

canapes

Anyway, the High 5 Bread Tuna Canapés is very easy to make and it requires no cooking! All you need is basically a cutter to cut the pieces of bread into round shapes before buttering it and adding some tuna, cherry tomatoes and a sprinkling of spring onions.

making canapes

It is an art form – you’re supposed to decorate the canapés and I guess I wasn’t really good at that.

group shot

Anyway, there was a prize for the best group amongst the gaggle of bloggers and media that was there. I did the speech, much to the woe of my teammates as I described how Kimberly dropped her dough, KY made a curry puff that expanded due to the overfill and how I somehow managed to eat a canape while at the same time unintentionally doing a Wright Brothers on it. Michelle and Nicholas‘ team won. Congrats! =D

Here’s a video of Chef Ismail working his magic. It’s quite long but good for the recipe!

tasting

There is also a contest where you can win iPads amongst other things called Jom Rasa & Menang. It’s really easy to enter!

ipad

Just look for the sticker on any High 5 bread products – there are different requirements depending on whether it’s sandwich bread, sausage rolls, buns, or cream rolls. After you buy it, fill up the entry form and enter the barcode displayed on the High 5 bread before dropping off your entry at the contest box located at bread stands in retail outlets or mailing it in. You can get more information and the contest form at http://www.silverbird.com.my/contest.php.

eating canapes

The High 5 cooking session with Chef Ismail was really fun! I liked how all the recipes bring out the essence in High 5 bread and now I have my own recipe arsenal to add to my repertoire of cooking! Thanks for the hospitality High 5! I really liked the Mini Pizza that I made. I guess you can say it’s the best thing since sliced bread. smirk

us cooking

I don’t know exactly how the subject changed so considerably from taking underwater shots to cooking but that was what happened one fine day when I was on MSN with Veen Dee. A relaxing weekend cooking (although as it turns out, I didn’t do much of that) at Linda’s place.

Thus, she rallied the rest and I was one of the first to arrive at Linda’s place (which does not appear on my GPS) together with Fresh. Rachel came after that. Anecdote time! Did you know that Rachel’s aunt used to own the Royal London Circus? I remember going to that as a little kid and standing on top of the bench (coz we could only afford to sit at the extreme back). There was an old man behind me who I totally blocked the view off, but he was so kind about it. T_T

Anyway, this is Rachel who practically grew up in a circus and can regale you with tales of housekeeping staff coming out from unearthly realms to haunt good people in hotels.

Veen Dee bounced in after that (gotta love this girl, she’s very entertaining to watch) with some groceries. (I was the Cup Bearer so I brought alcohol. smirk) and the rest soon dribbled in and Michelle started cooking.

It seems that we ran out of mushrooms somewhere in the middle of the cooking session though so Linda drove me and Veen Dee to go get the mysterious fungi.

The Pizza Hut Fish King Pizza (RM 32.90 a la carte for a Regular sized pizza) comes with 8 breaded and deep fried Alaskan Pollock Fish Fingers on every slice. The fish fingers are tender and juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside – just like what a good fish and chip shop would produce!

I love the presentation too – there are wedges of lemon neatly arranged smack dab in the middle of the pizza for you to squeeze on the fish sticks. The fish sticks are made from specially imported Alaskan Pollock which is a type of cod.

starzbites promo stand

Pizza Hut is having a new promotional pizza called the Starzbites Sausage Pizza. It comes with the tagline “Double the treat! Double the fun!” and is a new concept where mini cocktail sausages (like mine) are embedded in the crust – not as in sausage ring type filled crust (which was a previous promotion), but in a star burst configuration.

starzbites spinner game

True to Pizza Hut’s promotional pizza tradition, there is a spinner game involved. :) The rules of the game have changed this time though – you’re allowed one spin, and if the spin goes to a free regular Starzbites pizza, you have to spin for a second time and get it right again to get the pizza. Otherwise, you default to the second spin’s item.

starzbites girl

I’m know to be spun all the time (old readers of sixthseal.com will get this reference ;)) so I was the designated spinner. I got a free salad (which is better than a free Pepsi, which is what I tend to get in the spinner games). :)

starzbites salad bar

Thus, it was off to the salad bar to claim my free salad…

starzbites salad

…which I’m not able to utilize to the full potential due to my lack of salad stacking skillz. ;)

starzbites sausage pizza

This is the Starzbites Sausage Pizza with Hawaiian Supreme topping. It’s claim to fame is the star burst configuration and the alternate toppings on the individual sausages. The New York style topping of mayonnaise and tomato sauce is on one sausage while the next sausage would have the Chicago style topping of honey mustard and relish.

starzbites sausage pizza fangs

The Starzbites sausage pizza is also given a sprinkling of black sesame seeds on the side of the star burst shaped pizza. It tastes quite good and is a rather novel presentation of a pizza.

starzbites us

The STARZBITES Sausage 1 combo (recommended for 2 persons) is priced from RM 29.90 and contains:
1 Regular Starzbites Sausage Pizza
2 Soup-of-the-Day
4 pcs Breadstix
2 glasses of 7Up Revive

peppinos pizza

Peppino’s Pizza is a hole in the wall located in the Pedada area in Sibu. Peppino’s Pizza serves semi-authentic Italian pizzas (about as authentic you can get over here) and there’s a neon sign showcasing their product. It is easy to be put off by the garish fittings, but it’s actually a very nice place to eat, if you don’t mind al fresco seating arrangements.

peppinos pizza seating

Peppino’s Pizza only serves pizza but they are good at what they do. The menu is somewhat limited with just 10 choices, but they also serve Calzone – which is not a Pizza Hut trademark, contrary to popular belief, but a type of pizza which is folded over.

peppinos pizza oven

Peppino’s Pizza puts their pizza in a huge electric oven and it’s about a 15-20 minute wait for each pizza to be ready.

peppinos pizza girl

This is one of the staff with a peel (the paddle thing) when our pizzas were done – baked to perfection.

4 seasons pizza

This is the 4 Seasons pizza that the proprietor recommended. The pizzas are served on a wooden block and pre-sliced into four (4) slices. It’s RM 19 for a small 8″ pizza, RM 28 for a medium sized 10″ pizza and RM 36 for the big 12″ sized pizza.

4 seasons slice

The 4 Seasons pizza (RM 19) comes with toppings that include sweet peppers, mushrooms, ham and tuna. It tastes pretty good, it’s kinda like a fusion between a seafood pizza with the tuna and a regular meat pizza with the ham.

peppinos special pizza

We also had the flagship Peppino’s Special pizza. This is their premier offering and is priced at RM 20 for the 8″, RM 28 for the 10″ and RM 34 for the 12″ pizza. I don’t know why the pricing structure is different from the 4 Seasons pizza, with the largest size ending up cheaper than the 4 Seasons, which contradictorily starts out cheaper for the smallest size.

peppinos special slice

Peppino’s Special is topped with tuna, ham, mushrooms and pineapple and tastes kinda like a Hawaiian pizza with the pineapple topping. I like this one more than the 4 Seasons pizza, it’s juicier with the addition of the mushrooms and pineapple and I like pineapples in my pizza. I like eggs as well, which is an Australian style pizza, but we don’t get that over here.

peppinos pizza us

Peppino’s Pizza serves their pizza on a thin crust, and it’s been around for quite a while and doing brisk business with the overseas students currently working in Sibu. I think that is their target market with their pricing structure (which is similar to Pizza Hut) and the owner has a daughter studying in Australia or New Zealand. I have gotten a lot of good feedback about the quality of their pizzas compared to commercial franchises like Pizza Hut.

mystical moroccan pizza door

Pizza Hut came out with another new pizza in commemoration of the Muslim celebration with the Mystical Moroccan Pizza. The Mystical Moroccan Pizza is a unique square pizza (instead of the usual round ones) that comes with the tagline – Discover the Exotic Flavors of Morocco.

The Mystical Moroccan Pizza comes with a similarly themed Pizza Hut
“spinner” game which is now standard with all new promotional pizzas.
The spinner games give the patrons who order the promotional pizza
incentives in the form of free food and drink, depending on the luck of
the spin.

mystical spin

This one is called The Mystical Spin and plays on the
square shape of the pizza. The two spinners are called the “Destination
Spinner” and “Number Spinner” and the first one directs the player into
one of the four quadrants which depicts holy sites in the Islam faith.
The prime prize is always another promotional pizza. I got the
Breadstix and asked to change that to a Pepsi instead (coz I was
thirsty).

puff pastry soup

There is also an option to upgrade the Soup of the Day to Puff Pastry Soup
for RM 1 which I highly recommend. The Puff Pastry Soup is actually
baked in the kitchen and not from the (admittedly) slightly disgusting
container where the communal Soup of the Day is located. It comes with
a pastry top and the entire soup container is piping hot!

puff pastry soup tomato

The Puff Pastry Soup comes with an option of tomato soup or mushroom
soup and it’s made to order, with the pastry baked WITH the soup and
that makes all the difference. The soup comes out scalding hot and the
puff pastry on top works very well when dunked into the soup and let to
soak for a bit. Tabasco sauce goes very well with the soup that Pizza
Hut serves (Campbell).

mystical moroccan pizza square

This is the Mystical Moroccan Pizza – it’s a square (!) pizza that
comes with the pitch “The new Mystical Moroccan Pizza is a culinary
adventure! Enjoy golden slices of dried apricots, roasted onions,
olives, and chicken or beef marinated with exotic herbs. All topped on
a spread of savory and sweet Moroccan sauce. Get a taste of Morocco
with every bite!”

mystical moroccan pizza closer

The advertising hyperbole aside, the Mystical Moroccan Pizza really
does taste good. The Pizza Hut attendant came over and asked us to do a
customer survey for the Puff Pastry Soup and the Mystical Moroccan
Pizza and I told her that they’re both good, and that all we needed was
a shisha for an authentic experience. ;)

mystical moroccan pizza slice

Here’s a closer look at the Mystical Moroccan Pizza – it has beef
pieces and olives as well as dried apricots and I like the square shape
of the pizza, which allows for even slices of pizza that’s easy to
hold. It’s a great pizza, much better than the usual promotional Pizza
Hut fare. I told Ericka that all I needed was some hashish and I’ll
think I’m in Morocco, that’s how good the pizza is…

thymes continental cuisine

Thyme’s Continental Cuisine is one of the
relatively new eating establishments to hit the scene. Thyme’s
Continental Cuisine is located at Chonglin Park and the previous lot
was occupied by a dangdut pub before Thyme’s took over.

thymes initial d

There are several sections in Thyme’s Continental Cuisine – there’s
an al fresco seating area to the front, a shaded patio with a juice and
coffee bar and the air conditioned interior. I noticed an Initial D
promotional poster and asked about it – the proprietor told me that
they have a promotional tie in with Star Cineplex.

thymes interior

Anyway, back to Thyme’s, the interior is a nicely decorated area
with subdued lighting. I’ve seen this place at night and I’ve always
thought the lighting is nice, if anything. Thyme’s Continental Cuisine
serves continental fare – there’s pasta, salads, various cuts of
steaks, club sandwiches and pizzas.

thymes pepsi

Intrigued by the Initial D The Movie promotional tie in, I ordered the Initial D Set Menu 1
(RM 25). It consists of miso soup, 86-Burger, tiramisu and a Pepsi. I
wanted to order Thyme’s Tempura Prawn Burger too, but the waiter
discreetly informed me that the “86-Burger” (as in AE-86 of the hottest
current franchise) is the exact same thing as the Thyme’s Tempura Prawn
Burger.

thymes miso soup

This is the miso soup which came out first…it has that slight
cloudy-sediment formation that I associate with miso soup but seems to
have an alien ingredient (at first look) inside – bean sprouts!
Fortunately, it was just remnants from last night’s visual…er,
discrepancies (review coming up). It isn’t bean sprouts but wonderfully
soft small capped mushrooms. The miso soup also has shrimps inside, a
very nice touch, taste wise.

thymes initial d 86 burger

Next up, came the main course, which is the 86-Burger a.k.a. Thyme’s Tempura Prawn Burger.
;) The menu insert for Thyme’s Tempura Prawn Burger describes it as a
Tempura Prawn Burger with cheese and tonkatsu sauce served with Freedom
fries (kidding, it says French fries) and coleslaw. I like the
attention to detail in the 86-Burger – there are two wooden skews
tipped with colored foil to “hold” the burger in place and the coleslaw
is sprinkled with sultanas, providing a sweet twist.

thymes tempura prawn burger

Here’s a peek under the skirts of the 86-Burger – there are generous
amounts of large battered tempura prawns but I think the machine is
leaking tonkatsu oil…it can be toned down a little.

thymes pizza

I also ordered a pizza – this is The Thyme’s Pizza
(RM 17) which was recommended to me as the flagship of their pizza
line. It contains turkey ham, crab meat, mushrooms, pineapple and
chicken pepperoni. It’s an authentic Italian style flat crust pizza.

thymes pizza crust

The flat pizza was baked perfectly too, it comes highly recommended from me, but be prepared to wait.

thymes sundae

Unfortunately, the tiramisu was finished so they offered me a sundae
as a replacement dessert. I moved to the patio outside for dessert and
ordered a Mocha. The sundae has slightly salty batter coated peanuts,
which I found to be an interesting choice to implement in a sundae.
It’s unusual but surprisingly came out well.

thymes mocha

I also managed to chat with the very hospitable Mr Chan, who is the
proprietor, over a mug of Mocha. I asked him about the Initial D
promotional tie in with The Star and he kindly gave me a ticket for the
Initial D movie when it opens in theaters and gave me a good discount
on my bill too.

Cuisine has a nice range of continental cuisine that will not
disappoint you. The food is affordable and the ambience is nice. It
comes highly recommended from me.
