Promegranate fruit

promegranate fruits

The promegranate fruit, sometimes spelled as pomegranate, is a seed
based fruit that I’ve seen around in Australia and Malaysia, but never
got around to trying it, not being a big fan of fruits.

promegranate fruit

I got one of them to eat just now though – it retails for RM 3.59
per fruit and the promegranate fruit originates from India. It looks
rather like an onion with its bulbous shape and flared ends – a large,
reddish onion.

promegranate half

The pomegranate fruit is filled with red seed pulps in segments much
like the pomelo fruit. I was told that only the seeds are edible, and
not the skin.

promegranate eaten

Much like the pomelo fruit, the pitted areas around the skin and
segments tastes bitter, but the seeds have a slightly muted
tartness…muted being the keyword here. I found the fruit rather
bland, to be honest, and didn’t find eating it fresh particularly
interesting, though I imagine it would go well in other preparations.

Jade Pot Tea House

jade pot tea house

I’ve often passed by this eating establishment, coz the place to pay
utility bills here is just beside it, but I’ve never been there for
lunch before. I went today with my coworker for lunch.

jade ambience

The ambience of the place is alright, it’s pretty crowded during
lunch hour and the popularity of this place surprised me. The cuisine
is self-dubbed Taiwanese.

jade counter bar

This is the main counter. I found the mix of ancient Chinese tea cups and wine glasses to be pretty odd…

jade drunken lady

I had a concoction called Drunken Lady for my drink. I can’t
establish what is inside i.e. what it’s made of, but Bernice says she
tasted Ribena, but I didn’t.

jade taiwan beef noodles

This is what I ordered for my main meal – Taiwanese Style beef
noodles. It was recommended by the waitress as being their flagship
dish and the most popular one. It was alright, but nothing to write
home about.

jade spicy noodles

This is what Bernice had – Spicy noodles. We both agreed that it
wasn’t spicy enough. It seems that we’re similar in this sense…we
like to eat ultra spicy food. Heh!

jade bernice me

Jade Pot Tea House. Pay your utility bills and eat at the same time!

Kafe Pelangi

kafe pelangi

Kafe Pelangi is located at Choice Super Mall in Kota Semariang. I’ve been having my lunch there for three days in a row.

Lunch – Day #1

pelangi day 1

This is what I had for the first day – nasi campur, tapai and kopi peng.

pelangi tapai

Here’s a closer look at the tapai. It tasted sour…a bit too sour. I assume it’s been left out there for a bit too long…

pelangi nasi campur

This is what I had for nasi campur (mixed rice) – curry chicken, brinjals cooked with chilli and a pumpkin/vegetable mix.

Lunch – Day #2

pelangi day 2

This is lunch on the second day. I just went for Malay style chicken
rice coz we were in a hurry. I also had two pieces of fried mini spring
rolls and a coke.

pelangi spring roll

The mini spring rolls were vegetarian and costs RM 0.30 each. It’s alright I guess…at least it’s not sour. πŸ˜‰

pelangi chicken rice

Here’s a close up of the chicken rice. Nothing to write home about. It’s chicken. It’s rice.

Lunch – Day #3

pelangi day 3

This is the third and last day we ate at Kafe Pelangi. I had Mee Jawa, a sandwich, a piece of kueh and coke.

pelangi sandwich

Here’s a closer look at the sandwich. We see that it’s a sardine, cucumber and egg sandwich.

pelangi kueh

This is the kueh – it tasted sweet, with a dusting of something salty at the end.

pelangi mee jawa

This is the Mee Jawa. It tasted good, spicy and nice.

I think this is probably one of the more thorough reviews I’ve done
on an eating establishment that is, to call a spade a spade,
substandard. πŸ˜‰

SMK Sacred Heart school canteen

smk sh

I thought I’ll do a food review on a school canteen for a change. I reckon it’ll be funny, but it was anything but…

smk sh cafeteria

SMK Sacred Heart has a full fledged (!) old skool coffee shop
operation going on in the canteen. I’ve never seen the likes of it
before. Why, in my previous high school, we only had RM 0.50 fried
noodles, precooked and stuff like that to choose from. This “canteen”
has a full ordering service.

smk_sh_mess.jpg

The ambience was nothing to speak of…standard mess style dining
area. The ordering area is like a coffee shop though. Jesus, kids
nowadays. Why, I could regale you with tales of the time when I was
young; when I had to walk bare foot through a jungle trail to get to
school, but that’s digressing. πŸ˜‰

smk sh food

This is my order – Coca Ice and Iban Mee. “Coca Ice” turns out to be very dilute Milo but at RM 1.20, you get what you pay for.

smk sh iban mee

The Iban Mee was surprisingly good at RM 2. It’s a spicy fried
noodle dish, with a healthy (generous, really) sprinkling of fried
onions on top.

smk sh girls

I was surprised to find a couple of girls in there, since Sacred
Heart is an all boys school (except for Form Six, but they looked too
young for that). I talked to them and got them to pose for a photo and
they told me they are from Sacred Heart, but Jesus (no pun intended),
don’t they look rather young for 18?

BDC Seafood Restaurant

bdc seafood restaurant

BDC Seafood Restaurant is the mammoth three storey high restaurant
located, aptly, in BDC Commercial Center. It has see through window
panes on all the levels, allowing passerby’s to see the diners…er,
dining, in all their glory.

bdc door

This is the main entrance to BDC Seafood Restaurant at the ground floor.

bdc interior

The interior of the place is well decorated, typical of a Chinese seafood restaurant, but reassuringly familiar all at once.

bdc yang chow

I opted for Yang Chow Fried Rice (RM 4). This place is well known for it’s affordability and good food.

bdc nestum chicken

This is the Nestum Salad Chicken (RM 8). The chicken is coated with
a batter which has Nestum cereal inside before being deep fried, sliced
into manageable pieces and served with mayonnaise. The Nestum cereal
flavors carries well into the dish – highly recommended.

bdc drunken prawns

Here we see the Claypot Drunken Prawn (RM 20). The claypot dish has
large prawns simmered in a wonderful broth, and the wine taste and
flavors were overwhelmingly tasty, with the wine flavors again carrying
through perfectly.

bdc three joy

This is a non-menu dish our attendant recommended. It’s going to be
a menu item in a while and he gave us a chance to try it out before
then. They’re going to name in “Three Joy” or something to that effect
(in Chinese of course). It’s a vegetable dish that’s made with long
beans, potatoes and brinjals, cooked with spicy belacan. It’s very
unique and tasty.

bdc large ochien

I present to you…the largest oyster omelette (RM 15) in Kuching,
Sarawak, and probably the world! πŸ˜‰ I was amazed by the sheer girth of
this o-chien (oyster omelet) when it arrived on the table. The amazing
proportion just overwhelmed me and rendered me speechless. The others
had eaten here before and were used to it – and they confirmed that it
was the largest oyster pancake in town, to the best of their knowledge.

bdc dessert

I had a concoction of sago, raisins and shaved winter melon soaking
in a coconut infused sweet milk for dessert. The complex textures and
flavors were amazing.

bdc great meal

I would recommend BDC Seafood Restaurant for a nice, affordable
meal. They cater for weddings and special occasions as well, and you
have three floors of dining space and an attentive staff along with the
good food.

Bubble Tea Zone

bubble tea zone

Bubble Tea Zone is the newly opened outlet in Wisma Sanyan, Sibu. I
was intrigued by their unusual menu and popped in to check the place
out.

btz stairs

The interior is novel in the sense that it has a small staircase by the side that leads to…

btz upper nook

…a little nook upstairs for more privacy.

btz view

The little level up top also has a great view of the main road down the tallest building in Sibu.

btz staff friendly

The proprietor and staff is a friendly bunch of people. It’s all female owned and operated from what I gather.

btz_sausage_range.jpg

The place serves snacks in addition to their wide variety of bubble
tea. They have a great range of Taiwan sausages for RM 2.30 each.

btz snow bubble

I had the Blueberry Snow Bubble, which is bubble tea with sago pearls, ice blended with ice cream.

btz mixed slush

This is the Mixed Fruit Ice Cream Slush. It’s a refreshing blend of
ice cream and fruits and I loved the way the soft serve ice cream is
blended with ice, which sounds like it would taste bad, but instead
synergizes to form a wonderful texture.

btz taiwan sausages

I also ordered two different versions of Taiwan sausages – the Steak Sausage and the Lemon Sausage.

btz taiwan close

It tasted divine – hot from the grill, with a unique flavor. Highly recommended.

Jojo Cafe

jojo cafe

I went out for dinner with a bunch of people from different age
groups yesterday night at Jojo Cafe. I guess the best word for it
is…networking, cliche as that may sound. It was enlightening; got to
meet people from different fields e.g. management, design, publishing,
education etc. and exchange business cards.

jojo dinner network

I’ll like to give the person who first thought of the concept of
business cards a big hearty slap on the back, coz I won’t remember
names and numbers the next day otherwise. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, back to the food,
Jojo Cafe is located at 3rd Mile, Kuching and serves really good curry
chicken (or so I hear).

jojo curry chicken

This is their curry chicken – the meat was tender, and the curry was
tasty. There’s nothing wrong with it, except for one thing…it doesn’t
have the spicy curry oomph that I like. It’s a good curry dish for
people who don’t take spicy food though.

jojo kailan

Here’s the kailan (a type of vegetable, stating the obvious ;))
cooked with salted fish. Now this dish is good, and hearing me say that
a vegetable dish is good means it’s really good, coz I’m not a big fan
of vegetables at all. The veggies was fresh and crunchy, and still
retains the original moisture and taste without any salted fish
contamination (unless you eat that of course).

jojo mutton soup

Next up is the mutton soup. It’s cooked with a variety of spices,
red dates, mushrooms, and all sorts of stuff. It’s basically mutton
soup, Chinese style.

jojo mutton soup bowl

I didn’t find anything noteworthy about the mutton, but the soup was well broiled and tasted great!

jojo tofu egg

This is tofu cooked with egg and vegetables, lying on top of a
lettuce bed. I can’t comment about tofu, coz long time readers would
know that I don’t like tofu. Well, I don’t like the edible kind of tofu
anyway, but the other kind of tofu… πŸ˜‰

jojo mango fish

Now this is the main dish – mango fish! The fish was smothered with
a delightful mixture of unripe mangos, peanuts, raw onions, shallots,
and spring onions. It creates a wonderful fusion of colors, flavors and
different textures, and the fish was fresh to boot. This is easily the
best dish of them all – highly recommended!

jojo left behind

After eating all that, should you feel the call of nature,
management reminds you not to leave the left side of your ass behind
(though how that is possible eludes me).

Kuching Festival 2004

kuching festival

Kuching Fest 2004 is the annual Kuching city festival which starts
on 1st August 2004. I was there last night with a couple of my friends
and this is the coverage of the event on the first day. The main focus
is on the food fest – that seems to be the most popular one every time.
There are also two videos for download – one with the fireworks display
and the other with two girls singing on the stage.

This is the video of the fireworks display to start of Kuching Festival 2004:

kf04 fireworks

This is a video of the fireworks display of Kuching Fest 2004 on the
first day. It was good – lasted for about 15 minutes or so and some of
the fireworks were impressive.

open air food court

The ground of Kuching Fest 2004 is largely taken up by a massive
open air food court. There were numerous stalls offering everything
from Iban Bamboo Cooked Chicken to Taiwan Sausages (with spicy, regular
and sweet options) lining the sides and tables and chairs in the
middle. There is also an indoor and outdoor area for exhibitors but I
did not find that noteworthy, so this will mainly cover the food fest –
the one which everyone goes to Kuching Fest for! πŸ™‚

food court people

The stalls offer a staggering amount of food options and we were
spoilt for choice…so we had a bit of everything. I remember eating
crab claws, yam prawn, blueberry yoghurt, ice cream, nasi kandar,
Taiwan sausages, sour duck, lok lok, roti susu, and something called
“love noodles”. It was a feast!

sausage iban food

L-R: Double Dragon Taiwan Sausage stall, Tenggiri + Pork Sio Bee/Mua
Chee stall (delicious), Iban Food stall with tuak (native rice wine at
RM 6), and chicken cooked in bamboo, amongst other things.

taiwan sausages

Here’s another stall selling Taiwan sausages at RM 2 each. Very,
very nice. It’s much better than the first one. I think there’s at
least 4 different stalls selling Taiwan sausages there.

briyani cafe

Briyani Cafe offering different rotis, murtabaks and briyani dishes.

lok lok

Lok lok!

ching chen noodles

Ching Chen and their Cinta Noodles.

mukah seafood

Mukah Seafood Center was there too. They have umai, a local raw fish dish.

regular sausages

Sausages galore! This is the regular ones though.

seafood cha kueh

Asian BBQ Seafood stall beside a hawker stall selling cha kueh, fried kueh tiaw and other staples.

richmond place

Richmond Place offering New Zealand Fish and Chips. There are also other franchises like Sugarbun and KFC there.

yoghurt stall

There is a stall offering Natural Home Made Yoghurt. I was a bit
dubious about this, due to the odd color of the yoghurt. It looked more
like agar agar than yoghurt to me. However, I got one and was
pleasantly surprised.

yoghurt blueberry

The blueberry yoghurt is surprisingly good. It tastes like what
proper yoghurt should be and the blueberry adds to the texture of the
yoghurt.

emperor dragon whisker sweet

Emperor Dragon Whisker Sweet. It’s those little balls of rolled confectionary.

sour duck

Batu Kawa’s 1st Sour Duck.

banana leaf

Banana Leaf – offering dishes served on…well, a banana leaf.

tables of food

Proletarians like us can only dream about seating in this cordoned
off area. πŸ˜‰ The tables are filled with the various stalls offerings
and are for invited “guests of honor” also known as the “I paid RM
100,000 for this Datuk title” club.

food eating competition

The proles had their own eating competition though.

crab claw

Crab claw with minced chicken and yam prawns. The former didn’t have
much crab in it and but the latter was good – prawns fried with a yam
batter.

sweet corn

This stall offers a novel twist to the standard sweet corn snack – it’s barbecued. The stall beside is Emperor Grill Chicken.

ice cream

This is an ice cream cone with two scoops of chocolate and corn
flavored ice cream. It’s topped with a wafer, a single cherry and nuts.
Divine.

indon asam kari mee

There are all sorts of culinary delights at the fest – this one is Indon Asam Kari Mee. There’s a stall selling paus beside it.

Here’s another kind of feast – one for your eyes:

kf04 stage

Download: Kuching Fest 2004 Stage [sixthseal.com]

This video shows two girls singing the Sha La La song with choreographed movements on the stage in Kuching Fest 2004.

kuching fest crowd

The festival ground was packed – people, people, everywhere. Each
one of them jostling to walk past the mass of humanity that was
present. It seems that Kuching denizens came out in full force for the
first day, don’t expect to park anywhere near the location since the
roads were lined with double parked cars.

kuching fest 04

It was worth it though – Kuching Fest 2004 lasts for a month, and you won’t be disappointed if you drop by.

Huge bowl of noodles

fried cooked noodle ha

This is the largest bowl of noodles I’ve ever had – Foochow style
aka “chau chu mien” (fried cooked noodles, literally). It’s noodles
that are fried before being broiled (?) in a thick gravy. Late lunch
with co-workers – it took about 30 minutes to come out even though four
out of the five of us ordered the same thing. I guess they didn’t have
a large enough wok to cook it in.

I’m extremely tired from work, going to sleep. My apologies for the sparse updates.

Oi! There’s hair in my food!

waiter oi hair lah
Waiter, there’s a fucking hair in my pork leg rice!
