KFC O.R. (Original Recipe) Chicken Chop

kfc chicken chop

KFC’s latest promotion is the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop. The O.R. seems to be standard notation for KFC’s Original Recipe now; much like how Kentucky Fried Chicken has been truncated to KFC.

kfc chicken chop promo

The KFC outlet at 3rd Mile Kuching is filled with promotional material for the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop. The walls of the franchise are plastered with promotional stickers for this latest product.

kfc chicken chop banner

The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop marketing spiel comes with the tagline “Treat Yourself Every Day”.

kfc chicken chop holder

The cardboard triangular holders for chilli sauce and ketchup on the tables have been replaced with the new KFC O.R. Chicken Chop promotion, in line with all previous promotional items.

kfc chicken chop news

It’s the latest promotion to hit REAL News (the lighted menu) together with KFC Colonel Rice [sixthseal.com].

kfc chicken chop prices

KFC O.R. Chicken Chop Combo meal comes with 1 Chicken Chop, 1 large fries, 1 serving of coleslaw and 1 carbonated drink for RM 10.90. The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop is also available separately (Ala carte) for RM 9.90 each.

kfc chicken chop sample

The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop has been described in the official KFC press release as “a piece of boneless whole chicken leg breaded and pressure cooked, topped with mushroom gravy, with sliced thin button mushrooms and with raisin coleslaw and golden crinkle-cut fries as side items.”

kfc chicken chop supply

KFC has dedicated a whole platter on their warmer just for the chicken chop, ensuring uninterrupted supply lines. The chicken chop is actually a long standing menu item in hawker stall style “Western Food” stalls. It’s a drumstick that’s has been de-boned and flattened to form a large footprint chicken piece.

kfc chicken chop meal

This is what the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop combo looks like. The mushroom gravy (which looks a lot like the gravy they use for mashed potatoes with sliced button mushrooms added) is served on the side for the user to pour according to their tastes. I thought this was a nice touch…

kfc chicken chop plate

Here is a closer look at the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop. There is a side of regular KFC coleslaw augmented with raisins (which tastes great!) and a side of large fries. The chicken chop retains the end of the drumstick and the other part is pure de-boned breaded chicken drum meat. =D

kfc chicken chop gravy

The gravy is served in the take-away coleslaw/mashed potatoes containers that KFC uses and it doesn’t look like much…

kfc chicken chop plate gravy

…but adds a lot to the KFC O.R. Chicken Chop. It is canonical to have gravy served on a chicken chop (the “Western Food” hawker style stalls usually use black pepper sauce) and chicken chop without gravy of any sort would be quite unpalatable (and essentially undifferentiated from a regular drumstick).

kfc chicken chop meat

The KFC O.R. Chicken Chop tastes great! I didn’t expect it to, but its comfort food to the max. The large cut fries (which is standard in Australian KFC outlets, of which I’m not a big fan of) surprisingly adds to the experience when eaten with the gravy.

kfc chicken chop evolve

The chicken chop concept is certainly “heavily inspired”, shall we say, from the age old “Western Food” stalls in hawker stalls and given a price hike (and a bit of a facelift) by KFC to be resold as something new. However, KFC has contributed to the evolution of the chicken chop in its own way.

kfc chicken chop end

KFC O.R. Chicken Chop really does taste good.

It’s great comfort food…

KFC Colonel Rice Combo

kfc colonel rice promo

KFC recently launched their latest product, the Colonel Rice Combo. I saw the advertisements in the papers and went to check it out at the KFC outlet in Sibu before I came back.

kfc colonel rice banner

KFC Colonel Rice banners were interspaced with their other new product, the Fish Burger. I like the design on the Colonel Rice banners – it’s simple and neat.

kfc colonel rice booth

The KFC outlet had a booth dedicated to promoting the new Colonel Rice. The booth is decorated according to the Padi (Paddy) Harvest theme, complete with costumes from the KFC staff.

kfc colonel rice sorter

There are rice harvest paraphernalia and contest forms at the Colonel Rice booth inside KFC. KFC is having a contest to commemorate the launching of the Colonel Rice with the staff going around to people ordering the dish and asking them to fill in the forms.

kfc colonel rice hat

This is a traditional rice farmer’s hat (inverted). The Colonel Rice Combo contest is open for everyone who orders the meal and the main prize is a trip for two to Hong Kong Disneyland.

kfc colonel rice stalks

KFC went all out to decorate the booth with rice related products. These are actually real paddy (rice plant) stalks. I like the ambience but I think it should be spaced further from the Fish Burger promotion so more space can be dedicated to this.

kfc colonel rice combo meal

This is the Colonel Rice Combo (RM 6.99) which contains the Colonel Rice, a side of KFC coleslaw, and two pieces of chicken. I had a drumstick and a piece of thigh. There is an option for Original Recipe chicken or Hot & Spicy and the Colonel Rice can also be ordered separately for RM 1.80 or RM 1.30 with any chicken product purchase.

kfc colonel rice combo

The Colonel Rice is “a blend of high quality fragrant rice mixed with KFC special aromatic spices and selected sweet raisins” topped with KFC’s original gravy. It never looks as good as the printed media would lead you to believe…

kfc colonel rice

KFC’s Colonel Rice is the perfect complement to their flagship chicken product in a predominantly rice consuming country. It’s a great idea, with one problem…

…SugarBun has successfully implemented it years before KFC with their Savory Rice. There goes “original”. πŸ˜‰

KFC Bandito Pockett Pineapple Salsa Sauce

kfc bandito pockett

KFC just came out with a new Mexican themed wrap called the Bandito Pockett with Pineapple Salsa Sauce.
It features a lot of cultural themed advertisements that Hispanics
would probably find offensive due to the heavily stereotyped
distillation of their culture. It’s a good thing we don’t have a large
Hispanic population over here. πŸ˜‰

bandito flex

The KFC Bandito Pockett Pineapple Salsa Sauce is unusual in the
promotional arena due to the emphasis on action oriented lifestyle
concepts that is so predominant in this ad campaign. There is a
distinctively “macho” feel to the promotional material which comes with
taglines like “Flex your muscles to the people inside”.

bandito jump

The taglines range from vaguely interesting and chuckle inducing to
the overboard trying-too-hard-to-be-funny promotional cardboard place
cards. There are Bandito Pockett promotional banners lining the top of
the KFC franchise with the phrase “Jump and touch this”,
which toes the line between cheesy humor and plain unfunny but the one
that takes the cake is the promo liner holding the ketchup – it goes “Start an arm wrestling match with the person sitting opposite you”.

It’s truly cringe inducing…

bandito front

Anyway, back to the food, here’s a look at the KFC Bandito Pockett
Pineapple Salsa Sauce packaging – it has a cardboard wrap that requires
opening, a design surprisingly similar to the McDonald’s Grilled Chicken Foldover [sixthseal.com].

bandito back

The back of the cardboard wrap has details with illustrations on “How to enjoy your Bandito Pockett”
and it evokes a feeling of deja vu due to the remarkable resemblance to
the illustrations of the cardboard wrap on the McDonald’s Chicken
Foldover (comes with the shit eating grin as well). It was probably
subbed to the same manufacturer.

bandito pockett

This is what the KFC Bandito Pockett Pineapple Salsa wrap looks like
– there’s a piece of Hot and Spicy chicken in there, mayo, lettuce and
salsa. The tray liner describes the ingredients more eloquently than I
am capable of:

How the Mexicans Eat Right & Stay Fit with the KFC Bandito Pockett

Lettuce
Rich in Vitamin A
Improves eyesight so we avoid running into cactuses (shouldn’t it be cacti?)

Mayonnaise
Rich in Vitamin E
Good for the heart, especially when you’re playing ‘avoid-the-rattlesnakes’ in the desert.

Cardboard wrapper
Made of high quality paper
High in Fiber.
(Warning: Not for eating)

Hot & Spicy 100% real chicken fillet
Rich in protein and bird flu carrier
Builds muscles for climbing over tall fences (and takes it all away again when avian flu sets in).

Pineapple salsa sauce with real pineapples
Lots of Vitamin C
Prevents colds in case some donkey sneezes on us.

Tortilla flatbread
Low in fat
So we can jump on our horses without breaking their backs.

I made up that bird flu bit btw; no one in their right mind would want to highlight that in KFC. πŸ˜‰

bandito bite

The KFC Bandito Pockett Pineapple Salsa Sauce is actually pretty
good – it’s lighter than the McDonald’s Chicken Foldover and the choice
of using a Hot & Spicy chicken fillet makes it taste really good.

bandito pockett wrap

Hmm…I’m seriously thinking about having another one despite the fact that I just ate there this afternoon.

Now, that’s fast food for ya…

KFC Curry Crunch

kfc curry crunch window

The new KFC Curry Crunch is the latest promotion to hit the menu and
it looks like it’s a winner. I went to KFC last night to sample the
Curry Crunch chicken, which comes with the tagline “You won’t believe
it’s KFC!”. It also mentioned “Try it now!”, so, hypnotized by those
three words, I walked into the KFC franchise…

kfc curry crunch promo girl

There was a KFC Curry Crunch promotional girl opening the door and
inviting passersby to try the new KFC Curry Crunch. She’s dressed in a
garish costume, but check out…

kfc curry crunch girl hat

…her hat. It has onions, chillis, garlics and all sorts of adornments on it.

kfc curry crunch buttons

The KFC Curry Crunch is being heavily promoted by the KFC staff, as
can be seen by the large buttons they wear with the Curry Crunch
chicken motif on it.

kfc curry crunch display

The KFC Curry Crunch display at the counter looks fine too, so I ordered a three-piece Curry Chicken set.

kfc curry crunch

This is what the KFC Curry Crunch looks like – there’s three pieces
of chicken that’s sprinkled with some kind of herb. I went for a
drumstick and two thighs.

kfc curry crunch macro

Here’s a closer look at the KFC Curry Crunch…the green herbs
that’s sprinkled on the chicken definitely adds texture and taste to it.

kfc curry crunch mmm

The KFC Curry Crunch tastes delicious! I wrote “The KFC Curry Crunch
is the best addition to the KFC menu to date!” in the comments slip the
KFC Curry Crunch promotional girl passed to me…it’s just that good!

KFC Cheezy Wedges

cheezy wedges

There’s just something about ordering KFC and eating Cheezy Wedges
in the office while working overtime. The warm potato wedges is just
perfect for the rainy day compounded by the cold air conditioning
settings…

cheezy wedges open

Just look at the gooey cream and cheddar cheese slathered on the steaming hot potato wedges…

Mmm…cheese… *drools*

KFC O.R. (Original Recipe) Fillet Burger

kfc or burger banner

KFC OR Fillet Burger is the latest addition to KFC’s admittedly paltry burger portfolio. The O.R. stands for Original Recipe, as in the KFC chicken.

kfc or burger lost

The advertisements and promos for the KFC O.R. Fillet Burger centers
around “missing” and “lost” themes involving the burger in question.

kfc or burger car

One particularly amusing one involves a “car missing” poster which
describes the lost car, which was last seen with a KFC O.R. Fillet
Burger on the front seat.

The KFC Original Recipe (O.R.) Fillet Burger is basically a Zinger
with an Original Recipe fillet inside, instead of the Hot and Spicy
breaded fillet used in the Zinger.

kfc or burger size

The diminutive size hardly makes it justifiable for a meal though…and yes, that is the real size, it’s smaller than a soda can…

kfc or burger wrapper

The KFC O.R. Fillet Burger comes in a mild blue colored wrapping, which is a contrast to the siren red Zinger wrappers.

kfc or burger filling

The O.R. Fillet Burger comprises of a tender cut of KFC Original
Recipe chicken, lettuce and mayo…and that’s about it. It tastes good
though, a simple but satisfying burger. I have no beef (pun not
intended) with it except for the below average size (for a burger).

It’s just not meant for big appetites…

KFC Popcorn Chicken Shake

kfc popcorn chicken shake

KFC has launched another new product line based on their popcorn
chicken. This time, it’s called the Popcorn Chicken Shake – I presume
some advertising d00d thought that Popcorn Chicken Shake (with an
inverted e) would speak the target demographic more effectively. πŸ˜‰

The promotional tagline goes “The more you shake it, the better it gets!”

kfc popcorn chicken shake crotch

This is very disturbing considering the numerous instances of
pictures depicting a boyish persona doing a “Look ma! I’m shaking the
Popcorn Chicken Shake using a hand under my crotch!” maneuver, which
I’m sure is an advanced trick managed only by high level Popcorn
Chicken Shaking enthusiasts.

popcorn chicken shake promo

Well, I wanted to try all four flavors so I ordered all of them. The
first one is free, there’s a RM 0.50 charge for additional sachets.
Popcorn Chicken Shake. It comes in a customized cup, which is the 22 oz
cup that you usually get served drinks by. It’s made of the same
material and only the top is different – this one has a Starbucks like
dome cover, but without any holes.

popcorn chicken shake cup

Popcorn Chicken Shake is basically Popcorn Chicken, which has been
used in many KFC products before. This time, it comes with flavor
sachets to add…well, flavor to the popcorn chicken. There are four
available flavor sachets – fiery Curry, zesty BBQ, tangy Tomato and
authentic Tomyam. Again, I’m not sure what the KFC promotion department
is thinking with this “caps only on the second word” thing. I thought
l33t sp34k died in the 90’s.

popcorn chicken shake fill

The popcorn chicken comes in the usual box and I poured it into the Popcorn Chicken Shake cup.

popcorn chicken shake add

I tore up and poured all four flavor sachets into it…

popcorn chicken shake dome

…and I shook! My friends gawped with admiration (or maybe it was
embarrassment) when I tried the expert level “One handed shaking it
under my crotch” maneuver. It resulted in this mess. The powdered
flavor sachets were evenly distributed amongst the popcorn chicken.

popcorn chicken shake finish

I nearly died of Chinese Restaurant Syndrome from the excessive MSG
content from four flavor sachets. I’m still recovering, but I’m not
impressed with this new KFC offering.

popcorn chicken shake it

Shake it, baby…

KFC Garden Salad with Popcorn Chicken

kfc garden salad

This is KFC’s latest introduction – the KFC Garden Salad
at RM 3.80. It’s a variety of vegetables (it differs in Peninsula
Malaysia and East Malaysia) served with Thousand Island dressing on the
side.

kfc garden salad popcorn

It also comes with an option for Popcorn Chicken (KFC’s mini chicken nuggets) for a “complete meal” at RM 5.

kfc garden salad serve

This is what KFC’s Garden Salad looks like. It’s served in a plastic
receptacle and the vegetables are cold. There are also two packets of
Thousand Island dressing and the salad is served with a plastic fork.

kfc garden salad view

We have lettuce leaves lining the bottom, a bedding of shredded
carrots, corn kernels scattered throughout the salad, cucumber sticks
lining the tray and sliced tomatos on top.

kfc garden salad w chicken

The popcorn chicken is served separately and I scattered it on the salad.

kfc garden salad w dressing

The Thousand Island dressing is then drizzled liberally…

kfc garden salad final

…and the KFC Garden Salad with Popcorn Chicken was half heartedly
tossed. You can’t get much tossing done with a plastic fork, I can tell
you that.

Nevertheless, I found it delicious – all the vegetables tastes
fresh, cold and crunchy and the crispness of the lettuce tasted
wonderful with the hot popcorn chicken. I wonder what the regional
variations are – I know the ones in KL have red capsicum, which we
don’t.

KFC Satay Burger

kfc satay burger

KFC Satay Burger is a newly launched product – the latest burger
from the KFC fast food franchise, targeted at local market tastes. I
like the satay fan image behind the logo, it represents the fan satay
sellers use to manually fan the hot charcoal in the past, but they use
auto fans for that nowadays…it’s a trip down nostalgia lane.

satay burger combo cup

I couldn’t resist reviewing something like this of course, so I went
for the KFC Satay burger combo meal. It comes with a free KFC tumbler
and I had the red one. The KFC Satay combo meal comprises of:

1 KFC Satay Burger
1 Potato Wedges (4pcs)
1 Carbonated drink (R)
1 Cool Cup
(available in 4 cool colors)

Hey, don’t look at me like that. I wasn’t the one who wrote it. πŸ˜‰

satay burger combo

This is what the KFC Satay Combo Meal looks like. I should explain
what satay sauce is at this point – it’s a peanut based sauce, with
predominantly sweet flavors and is used to complement satay, which is
meat skewed on sticks. The satay burger from KFC only retains the satay
sauce and cucumbers as the topping.

kfc satay burger wrapper

The Satay Burger comes in its own wrapping; the easy cone shaped
wrapper that has become the de facto standard nowadays – eat without
getting your hands dirty! You can think of satay sauce as chunky peanut
butter with a less creamy texture and with a saltier aftertaste to it.
It tastes better than it sounds.

satay burger cone

Now, we come to the meat of the matter (excuse the pun). The Satay
burger is basically a Zinger with satay sauce and cucumbers on it.
Honestly, I heard the KFC supervisor on duty say that. πŸ™‚ The cucumber
slices are nice and crisp and I like how the satay sauce tastes like,
although it seems to confuse itself with sambal sometimes.

satay burger messy

It looks kinda messy, but it tastes great.

…and you get a free KFC water tumbler to boot. Mine is red. What’s yours? πŸ˜‰

ChickaCheese by KFC

kfc chickacheese

This is the new product by KFC – Chick-a-Cheese! It costs RM 1.90
and didn’t look like much from the banner, but I went in to check it
out anyway.

chickacheese promo

There was a lot of cheesy goodness.

chickacheese decor

Much more than I expected.

chickacheese assault

I was overwhelmed by the cheddar assault.

chickacheese tray

Hell, even my tray liner is advertising the new Chick a Cheese.

Here’s some interesting facts (?) from the liner notes:

KFC Chick-a-Cheese

Crispy Cheese-stuffed Chicken Sausage on a Stick!

Introducing the new Chick ‘a’ Cheese from KFC! A juicy chicken
sausage, stuffed with yummy cheddar cheese, cooked nice & crispy in
corn batter. That’s what gives it the triplelicious taste of corn,
cheese & chicken!

Did you know?

Sausages have been around for a loooong time. The Babylonians and
the Chinese have been eating them since 1500 BC! They were even
mentioned in Homer’s “Odyssey”, written in the 8th century BC.

The term “hot dog” was coined by cartoonist Tad Dorgan in 1901. He
sketched a cartoon depicting vendors selling “dachshund sausages” but
wasn’t sure how to spell “dachshund” – so he just called them hot dogs!

Corndogs, made by dipping in corn batter, are a popular item in
American high school cafeterias. They were created in 1942 for the
Texas State Fair by Neil Fletcher.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, July is National Hot Dog Month!

chickacheese

Anyway, this is what the Chick ‘a’ Cheese looks like. It’s corn dog on a sticks wrapped in individual packages.

chickacheese 1

Here’s what it looks like after a bite has been taken out of it.

chickacheese 2

Here’s another angle.

What does it taste like? It tasted surprisingly good actually. The
warm cheese was divine, melting out of the crispy batter and creating a
wonderful fusion with the sausage. Recommended!
