Superhero Movie

superhero movie

Superhero Movie was one of the worst movies I saw in recent memory. I caught it in one of the theaters in a shopping mall in Miri since we didn’t have anything to do until dinner. Superhero Movie is from the same producers of Scary Movie, Epic Movie etc and is a parody of the genre.

superhero movie pirate

The primary influence is from Spiderman but I also caught references from the Fantastic Four, Superman, X-Men, The Fly (which is not a superhero movie per se but a darker sci fi flick), and Batman Begins. It’s got a lot of laughs out of the audience but it’s relies a lot on cheesy slapstick humor which I guess I’m a little too high brow to appreciate. πŸ˜‰

superhero movie tix

Oh well, at least it’ll only waste about 60 minutes of your time. That’s how short the movie is – about an hour of footage before the credits roll.

KJ’s house in Miri

kj house

I stayed at KJ’s house in the Pujut area in Miri during my trip there. He just bought it and had it renovated and invited us to stay for the duration of our vacation. In return, I drove his Hilux down from Sibu to Miri for him. I flew back though, I couldn’t imagine the horrors that would await me during a 6 hour drive after being hungover and er…recovering, so to speak, from the various substances that I accidentally ingested during the trip. πŸ˜‰

kj living room

It’s still not fully renovated yet, but the living room is pretty much done and most of the fittings are in place. I like the long reclining sofa that’s in front of the TV. And also persian rugs that will lend a beautiful elegance to home. You can find more varieties of area rugs with oriental flair.

kj gym

He installed an exercise machine (mini gym?) in one corner that I tried to utilize…for about two minutes before I gave up…

kj lounge

…and went back to lounging about on the couch.

kj us

Faye was staying there as well – we drove down together, with her taking the first leg of the journey to Tatau while I slept for an hour and me taking over the wheel after that, all the way to Miri.

kj bedroom

This is the bedroom I slept in. There are two queen beds to it can comfortably sleep four (4) people if you’re so inclined. It’s just right for two (2) people though.

kj hot tub

He even had a hot tub installed with jets of water in the master bedroom!

Thanks for the hospitality! It saved us from having to shack up in a hotel, which would have made the trip even more of a costly venture with the…er, misplacement of my digicam and cell phone. πŸ˜‰

Dragon Boat Festival – Duanwu Jie

dumpling work

The Dragon Boat Festival (more commonly known as Duan Wu Jie) is one of the traditional festive occasions for the Chinese. It falls on the 8th of June this year and our company’s social club took the liberty of distributing rice dumplings (called zhong zhi) to everyone in the office on Friday (since Saturday is a gazetted public holiday).

dumpling meat

There is one with meat filling (which may also contain chestnuts, peanuts or egg yolks in addition to the chicken)…

dumpling red bean

…and the other with red bean paste. These are the two popular fillings for rice dumplings. I’ve also seen pure peanut fillings but the meat (which can be pork or chicken, but never beef or lamb) and red bean paste fillings lead the pack in popularity.

dumpling faye

Faye’s grandmother also made some for her family and she insisted I consumed one right in front of her in the car just now. I like the meat dumplings (preferably with chestnuts, mushrooms and egg yolks – ate a huge one the other day given by another friend) but I don’t really enjoy eating red bean paste. I don’t even like the stuff in my cendol or ice kacang.

Happy Duanwu Jie to all the readers of sixthseal.com!

OT

ot

I just came back from work. I had to do some serious OT today at the office due to an event (?) tomorrow. Dinner was provided courtesy of the management. I have to wake up at 5 am tomorrow to boot but the consolation to that is that I’m going on a road trip to Miri this Saturday for the long Gawai holidays. πŸ™‚

I promise the Batang Ai trip report will be up tomorrow – it’s seriously long and should entertain you all while I’m gone for the weekend. Cheers!

Mr. Sandman is calling. I gotta go.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull

ksp indy tickets

Our office’s social club has organized a movie day at King’s Cineplex last night at 7 pm for a screening of the latest Indiana Jones. I had a baby shower, the company’s social club quarterly movie day plus a friend’s birthday to go to yesterday so I didn’t have time to blog. It only cost us RM 2 for a ticket. It was heavily subsidized by both our company’s social club and the King’s management so these events are very popular with the staff. Usual tickets cost RM 9.

indiana jones

Look at his long…er, cranium.
Indiana Jones 4 (Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull) is a throughly enjoyable adventure movie. You’ll know what to expect if you’ve seen the Indiana Jones franchise during your youth on TV. It can be predictable, and one particular coworker calls it “absurd”, but it’s an action adventure flick at it’s very best. It does require a certain suspension of disbelief to enjoy the movie. The lead character is neither supposed to be hit by a spray of bullets nor kick the bucket from his death defying stunts. It’s supposed to be a summer popcorn flick so switch off your brain and go watch Indy get carried off by giant ants! Just kidding, no spoilers here. Go Spielberg!

P/S – I just came back from an impromptu overnight trip to Sarikei. I started driving at 4 am in the morning and only got back here at 6 am in the morning. I will be posting up the backlogs later when I get home from work, Sandman willing. πŸ˜‰

Late night KFC raid

kfc plaza walk

I was out clubbing with Phoenix and Irene last Saturday when we were hit by a late night craving for solid food. We had gotten cup noodles at 7-11 for the Batang Ai trip but we didn’t want to dig into those supplies since there would be no time for replenishing said supplies before the shuttle departs for Batang Ai early next morning. It was 2:30 am in the morning and there were no eating establishments in sight for post-alcohol indulgence.

kfc game

Thus, we ended up roaming the Kuching CBD on foot and I remembered a KFC outlet at Plaza Walk outside Sarawak Plaza that is probably open 24 hours. They had a promotion going on where you can purchase a handheld game for RM 9.90 with any order of KFC chicken. I’m a sucker for these things – even though I never do play the game itself for any significant amount of time, I still like to collect them. I’m not even sure where they end up half the time!

kfc snack plate

Phoenix and I shared a snack plate with a drumstick and a piece of thigh.

kfc fighter

The handheld game is called X-Fighters. Batteries not included.

Eh, terbalik (upside down) some more…I don’t have AA batteries around my house.

The empire strikes back

a better mousetrap

I have been told by my fellow coworkers that
our office has a problem with rodent infestation. I have personally never
seen rats in the office but my colleagues have experienced secondary
effects from said creature. The more common grievances include snacks
being gnawed into and mugs and/or bottles falling over, or otherwise
disturbed, the next morning. I suspect the latter could be a manifestation
of clandestine office politics – covert ops of sabotage performed after
office hours – but there is a general consensus that we have a rat
problem.

bait

Thus, the management has procured three
mousetraps for our floor. These are not the unpopular snapping mousetraps
that are extremely hazardous to stray toes but the baited cage type with a
piece of cracker inside.

It looks like our furry little friends are in
for an unpleasant surprise.

P/S – I will be flying to Kuching on Saturday for the long weekend holidays. Anyone interested to hook up?

Bukit Lima Forest Park

bukit lima forest park

I went to Bukit Lima Forest Park with the people from work this morning. It’s supposed to be a jungle trekking session organized by the social club of the company that I work for. I headed over to Joyce’s house at 7:30 am coz I don’t really know the way to the forest park so I need to do a bit of tailgating behind her. πŸ™‚

sandwiches

Joyce is the vice secretary of the social club and she was busy preparing sandwiches when I got there.

joyce prep

I helped out (kinda…at least I opened the packets of sausages ;)) and we loaded up the car with the food supplies and drove down to Bukit Lima Forest Park.

prep

The place is rather hard to find, I certainly would have been lost without her. It’s not very far from Sibu town though, probably about a 15 minute drive away. We arrived there at around 8 am and proceeded to unload the stuff to a sheltered gazebo at the park grounds.

start

I headed straight onto the trail after that. It was a nice, cool morning and the sun wasn’t out in full force yet…perfect for a spot of jungle trekking, The signs read “Slippery Trek” and “Enter at your own risk” – not very reassuring epithets but it turned out to be a comfortable walk along a planked path.

stream

There was a stream overgrown with algae marking the start of the path. I was a little disappointed to find out that the sides were lined with common ferns and trees – no pitcher plants or exotic wildlife to be found here…

tree

The most interesting thing we bumped across was a felled tree partially blocking the planked path but in all fairness, it was a nice, comfortable walk…just not terribly exciting. πŸ˜‰

watch tower

There was also a three story concrete watch tower near the beginning of the path. In grand Sibu tradition, the whitewashed pillars were adorned with graffiti left by an aspiring adolescent tagger.

graffiti

Me: Oh, look! There’s graffiti on the walls.
Kathy: *peers over* That’s not graffiti ok! That’s vandalism!

foliage

The top of the watch tower affords a view of foliage, foliage and more foliage. The diversity of the plant life is certainly nothing to write home about.

taan trek

There are several trails to go on and we opted for the Ta’an Trek at 2,477 meters.

1km

This is a photo of us after 1 km.

3km

This is a photo of us after 3 km. πŸ™‚
I haven’t actually lost much weight and this is a testament to that. I still have a substantial amount of fat around my waist that I need to shed.

deluxe shed

The Ta’an Trek is still a work in progress as we arrived at a partially constructed shed near the end of that trail.

shed

This is what the completed huts look like. There are several along the path for weary hikers to rest their weary bones in. The partially constructed one seems to be a deluxe shed of sorts as it can handle double the capacity of the normal sheds.

snail

I also found a curious snail on the path. I’m not embarrassed to admit that I’m a little annoyed (read: scared) of flying insects and there was no shortage of that in the forest. Me and Kathy got harassed by all kinds of insects during the trek. I couldn’t even see some of them! I only heard the buzz of winged critters and perhaps a flicker of movement at my back which sent paranoid thoughts of cicadas or dragonflies landing on me and the subsequent frantic attempts to dislodge the imagined critters.

flora

I much prefer to stumble across flora rather than fauna…

this way back

Thus, it was with some relief that we reached the sign marking the end of the trail. I walked a total of 5 km this morning – 1 km to the Ta’an Trek, 2.4 km through the Ta’an Trek and 1.6 km back.

finish

It was about 10 am when everyone finished the jungle trekking and we proceeded to the next segment of the program – food.

frying

Someone brought along a tank of gas and a wok and started frying the sausages, fish balls and chicken wings for lunch.

sausages

The sausages swelled to an amazing girth after deep frying in oil. I’m not sure why one brand of sausages does that while the other doesn’t produce an appreciable increase in size after similar treatment.

joyce colin

Joyce and Colin did most of the frying while the rest of us did most of the milling around. πŸ˜‰

food

There was a lot of food – we ended up with a lot of leftovers and even passed some of the sausages to the security guards on duty, that was how much surplus we had.

sausage wrap

I was introduced to new and exciting ways of eating – this sausage wrap apparently makes the task of consuming the deep fried sausage easier coz the lettuce prevents the oil from coming into contact with your hands.

kids

Some of the staff also brought their families along and the kids seem to have a lot of fun.

bonding

It was a very nice company outing, what some people would call “corporate bonding”. πŸ™‚

Random musings

car crash

I was heading down on a site visit with a coworker this afternoon when we were cut off by a Honda City doing at least 90 km/h on a gravel road. I commented off-handedly that the driver is likely to have an accident judging by the way he/she was driving. Well, next thing we knew, we turned a corner and saw the Honda City lose control and crash head on into a utility pole. I am familiar with crashing into utility poles and judging by the speed the car was going, the driver was lucky the car didn’t crash through and drop into the huge drain beside the road.

There were a couple of security guards from a nearby factory running down the road towards the crash to see if they could help out the driver. It turned out to be a middle aged lady fetching her two kids back from school (they were still in primary school uniform). I am not sure if anyone was hurt coz there was a cement truck bearing down on us and I just had time to get a couple of photos off before I had to get off the shoulder of the road.

evelyn

Anyway, I was out tonight with Katherine and Evelyn. Evelyn (girl in pink) is back for the holidays and she used to be from my high school. Her parents are working in the same field as mine and her brother knows my sister but unfortunately, I can’t seem to remember seeing her in school. My memory is notoriously dismal though, so there you go. She has a degree is psychology (OMG! I can’t believe it! I haven’t had a crush in years! *swoons*) from Otago University in Christchurch, NZ and she’s doing mission work (as in church related) in Singapore.

I still can’t stop kicking myself for not noticing her back in high school and er…perhaps making a move (or two). πŸ˜‰

Anyway, I’m going jungle trekking with some people from work tomorrow morning. Early day tomorrow. Pictures and report will be up when I get home. Have an outstanding Labor’s Day break and don’t do anything I won’t do.

Workshop

workshop

I bumped into Eddy and Jonalyn while having dinner with Faye last night and we decided to head over to Workshop for a couple of drinks and to shoot some pool. This is a departure from tradition as I usually don’t go drinking with people from work (Eddy is a manager in the company that I work in). πŸ™‚

I also remember singing a couple of off-key renditions of Hotel California and I Will Survive. Heh! Workshop seems to be a rather chill place to hang out on Saturday night. It doesn’t have the massive turnout of 3 degrees Celsius and Q-bar and there’s even room for elbow space.
