Sugarbun Kano Meal and the new Premium 3 Layer Tea

sbun kano meal

Sugarbun has been offering the Kano Meal for a while, as part of
their constantly expanding list of menu items. It consists of two
options – Kano Chicken with Savory Rice or Mashed Potatoes. There are
also sub-options of one or two pieces of chicken. Kano Chicken is
Sugarbun’s chicken with a choice of three specialty sauces – Pedas
Sauce, BBQ Sauce and Satay Sauce.

sbun 3 layer tea

I also noticed that Sugarbun has a new drink out – Premium 3 Layer Tea. The promo looks like the “new” drink is…well, heavily inspired,
shall we say, by the famous 7th mile teh c peng in Kuching. It retails
for RM 1.90 and the promo shows the distinctive demarcation of tea,
ideal milk, and specialty syrup (read: gula melaka) that is the
signature of the 7th mile teh c peng that’s been around for…pretty
much forever.

sbun 3 layers

This is what the new Premium 3 Layer Tea looks like. It looks very
much like a commercialized version of the said 7th mile teh c peng. The
“specialty syrup” is a thicker version of the standard gula melaka
though. It’s hard for it to dissolve into the whole concoction, even
with vigorous stirring.

sbun 3 layer mixed

The finished drink tastes exactly like the teh c peng you can get if
you’re willing to drive 7 miles away from Kuching. However, I noticed
that the gula melaka is not just pure gula melaka. They did have merit
to call it “specialty syrup” coz it has a nice overtone of mint. I
guess that’s where the additional 50 cent surcharge comes from, but
then again, you have to pay for gas to drive to 7th mile. πŸ˜‰

sbun_kano_meal_pedas.jpg

This is the Sugarbun Kano Meal. I chose the Pedas Sauce with two
pieces of chicken and savory rice. The sauce tastes great, it’s not
very hot by my standards, but it’s hot enough to please me. They
slather the stuff over the chicken very generously too, so that’s
another plus point. It’s good.

sbun kano meal close

Here’s a macro shot of the Kano chicken. I opted for a drumstick and
a piece of thigh. This is the good part of the thigh, where the meat is
juicy and tender. Mmm…chicken…

sbun ice always

This is the one thing I always drink at Sugarbun – their Ice Kacang.
It’s absolutely fabulous, much better than other implementations I’ve
ever had, any where. It costs RM 3.50, which is much higher than hawker
stalls and their ilk would charge, but it’s worth every cent. Damn good
stuff, I tell you…

KFC Popcorn Chicken Shake

kfc popcorn chicken shake

KFC has launched another new product line based on their popcorn
chicken. This time, it’s called the Popcorn Chicken Shake – I presume
some advertising d00d thought that Popcorn Chicken Shake (with an
inverted e) would speak the target demographic more effectively. πŸ˜‰

The promotional tagline goes “The more you shake it, the better it gets!”

kfc popcorn chicken shake crotch

This is very disturbing considering the numerous instances of
pictures depicting a boyish persona doing a “Look ma! I’m shaking the
Popcorn Chicken Shake using a hand under my crotch!” maneuver, which
I’m sure is an advanced trick managed only by high level Popcorn
Chicken Shaking enthusiasts.

popcorn chicken shake promo

Well, I wanted to try all four flavors so I ordered all of them. The
first one is free, there’s a RM 0.50 charge for additional sachets.
Popcorn Chicken Shake. It comes in a customized cup, which is the 22 oz
cup that you usually get served drinks by. It’s made of the same
material and only the top is different – this one has a Starbucks like
dome cover, but without any holes.

popcorn chicken shake cup

Popcorn Chicken Shake is basically Popcorn Chicken, which has been
used in many KFC products before. This time, it comes with flavor
sachets to add…well, flavor to the popcorn chicken. There are four
available flavor sachets – fiery Curry, zesty BBQ, tangy Tomato and
authentic Tomyam. Again, I’m not sure what the KFC promotion department
is thinking with this “caps only on the second word” thing. I thought
l33t sp34k died in the 90’s.

popcorn chicken shake fill

The popcorn chicken comes in the usual box and I poured it into the Popcorn Chicken Shake cup.

popcorn chicken shake add

I tore up and poured all four flavor sachets into it…

popcorn chicken shake dome

…and I shook! My friends gawped with admiration (or maybe it was
embarrassment) when I tried the expert level “One handed shaking it
under my crotch” maneuver. It resulted in this mess. The powdered
flavor sachets were evenly distributed amongst the popcorn chicken.

popcorn chicken shake finish

I nearly died of Chinese Restaurant Syndrome from the excessive MSG
content from four flavor sachets. I’m still recovering, but I’m not
impressed with this new KFC offering.

popcorn chicken shake it

Shake it, baby…

Starbucks Coffee Jelly Frappuccino

starbucks coffee jelly 1 u

One of Starbucks Summer Fun beverage items is the much lauded Starbucks Coffee Jelly Frappuccino. This is the outlet in 1 Utama.

starbucks coffee jelly promo

Here’s what the literature says – Coffee Jelly Frappuccino Blended
Coffee “Take a sip of the world’s finest coffee, complemented by tasty
pieces of coffee jelly”.

starbucks coffee jelly

I ordered one and it didn’t disappoint. The coffee jelly is amazing,
it’s firm but yet, oh so pliable jelly, made of real coffee. It’s
divine!

starbucks coffee jelly jelly

It looks like cincau with caffeine. It tastes like a Frappuccino
with coffee jelly. It’s amazing. This is the last KL post. Phew, I’ve
cleared the backlog. πŸ˜‰

Air Asia Snack Attack menu review

snack attack intro

Snack Attack is the Air Asia on-board outsourced cuisine (if you can call airline food cuisine). I have tried the Snack Attack Chicken Congee
[sixthseal.com] before and it seems that they switch their menu items
once in a while and that one didn’t quite make the cut coz I didn’t see
it on the menu this time. This was on the trip to KL, I had wanted to
review the Snack Attack menu for ages.

snack attack attack

I had not eaten for a full 52 hours (I counted, statistical variance
of +- 30 minutes) in preparation for an all out attempt to tackle the
Air Asia’s prohibitively priced, bland tasting but yet strangely
attractive on-board offerings. This budget airline sells food and
merchandize on board, much like some US carriers do. Malaysian Airlines
provides food for free.

Snack Attack drinking water (RM 3)

snack attack drinking water

I first attempted to hydrate myself with their Snack Attack reverse
osmosis water, “exclusively for Air Asia”. It tastes like water. Hey,
what did you expect? πŸ˜‰

Snack Attack Malay sandwich (RM 6)

snack attack malay sandwich pack

The Snack Attack menu of sandwiches consists of 3 types of
sandwiches in 3 different categories – Western, Asian, and Malay. There
are three subgroups under the Malay sandwich banner, namely, Sambal
Anchovies, Chicken Satay, and Vegetarian Samosa. I went for the last
one. It comes wrapped in a square sandwich box.

snack attack malay sandwich

Here’s Vegetarian Samosa sandwich in all its…er, glory. It’s cut
in three horizontal strips but didn’t taste all that bad. Or maybe it
was coz I was hungry.

Snack Attack Nasi Lemak (RM 7)

snack attack nasi lemak

This is the nasi lemak (the only substantially filling item on the
menu) from Snack Attack. It has no logo, just a barebones classic foil
container which retains heat.

snack attack nasi lemak open

It tasted as sad as it looks. Oh well, at least the plastic spoon and fork didn’t break on me…I count my blessings. πŸ˜‰

Snack Attack SnackPack (RM 8)

snack attack snack pack

The Snack Attack menu describes this box of goodies with the tagline
– “Want a little of everything? How about our SnackPack with a tasty
savory, Cadbury chocolate and beverage. We’ve even thrown in a FREE
Snack Attack Pen!”

snack attack snackpack

There’s a RM 0.70 cent Gardenia Spicy Bilis Fun in a Bun, an RM 1.40
Cadbury Break chocolate bar and a pack of RM 0.80 justea. Move along
now, nothing to see here…

snack attack pen

Here’s the free Snack Attack pen, which I promptly misplaced.

Snack Attack Mango Juice (RM 3)

snack attack mango juice

I had to wash all that down with a bottle of mango juice…which tasted like generic mango concentrate diluted with water.

snack attack airlines

I’ll never fly S&M Airlines again…

Ringgit McSavers – New Chicken Burger, Orange McFizz, McDonald’s Privilege Card etc

mcringgit savers

Ringgit McSavers comprise of the newly introduced concept of RM 2.50
McDonald’s menu items. Great savings, every day! I’m a big fan of
McDonald’s, as regular readers of this site know. i’m lovin’ it and all
that. πŸ˜‰

ringgit mcsavers

I had a McAttack just now and went to the nearest McDonald’s to
check out their new Chicken Burger, which I’m told is not the same as a
McChicken. I had also wanted to try out the Orange McFizz.

mcd lime chill promo

I also noticed that they had a new drink out – Lime Chill. It’s
pre-blended and dispensed from one of those juice dispensers they have.
Notice the McDonald’s Privilege Card promotion to the side?

mcd priv front

On the same note, I was offered a loyalty card which they called the i’m lovin’ it Privilege Card. It costs RM 2 and comes in a siren red credit card format.

mcd priv back

Here’s the benefits this loyalty card gives you. I got one just for
fun, there’s not much benefits per se, but it’s well worth the RM 2 if
you eat at McD’s often.

mcd lime chill

Lime Chill is dubbed as The Zesty Thirst Quencher
and is available for RM 3.20 (22 oz) and RM 2.90 (16 oz). It tastes
good…it’s slightly carbonated and the taste is different from mere
lime juice but I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s definitely
thirst quenching.

The Orange McFizz is made up of two drink combinations:

mcd mcfizz sprite
Sprite

mcd mcfizz oj
Minute Maid Orange Juice

I half expected it to be a Sprite and F&N Orange mix (which will
undoubtedly be mediocre) but to my pleasant surprise, I saw that it was
a mixture of 1/2 Sprite which was then topped up with Minute Maid
Orange Juice.

mcd orange mcfizz

The texture and taste is divine. It’s above the world! The thick
pure fruit juice of Minute Maid was offset by the carbonated fun of
Sprite to make this the King of Thirst Quenchers! The Sprite fizzles up
through the Minute Maid orange juice and the combination came out to be
slightly thick, yet satisfyingly liquid. i’m lovin’ it. πŸ˜‰

mcd new chicken burger

I also had the aforementioned Chicken Burger, which
is a different menu item from the McChicken, the Chicken McDeluxe and
the Spicy Chicken McDeluxe. Chicken Burger is made from crusty grain
buns and has a great spicy sauce which is unlike any other I’ve tasted
before.

mcd new chicken eaten

Here’s what it looks like. It tastes really great – highly
recommended! The texture of the buns gives it a different zest that
makes this burger one of the greats.

Selamat berbuka puasa to all my Muslim readers. πŸ˜‰

Tadas from Coca-Cola, Japan

tadas coke

Tadas is one of Coca-Cola (Japan) product lines. The Japanese
Coca-Cola seems to have a larger portfolio of drinks and they’re nicely
packaged in a very unique 300 ml aluminum bottle for RM 6.99 each. It
seems that this novel aluminum bottle is common in Japan, as they are
other offerings in the same form factor, all by the Coke drinks line.

tadas cap coke

Tadas is one of them, and there are others in the same packaging as
well, like the Fanta! Grape drink and one mineral water (Aquarius –
also in the aluminum bottle form factor), amongst other things. I found
this Japanese import to be very appealing, due to the all aluminum
bottle (not can, bottle) casing.

tadas drink coke

It contains 300 ml of liquid instead of the usual 325 ml in a can.
Tadas tastes like what an isotonic (otherwise known as sports) drink
tastes like – nothing special, it’s slightly bubbly and thirst
quenching. It’s just the intriguing aluminum bottle form factor that
got me – interesting Japanese import for RM 6.99.

KFC Garden Salad with Popcorn Chicken

kfc garden salad

This is KFC’s latest introduction – the KFC Garden Salad
at RM 3.80. It’s a variety of vegetables (it differs in Peninsula
Malaysia and East Malaysia) served with Thousand Island dressing on the
side.

kfc garden salad popcorn

It also comes with an option for Popcorn Chicken (KFC’s mini chicken nuggets) for a “complete meal” at RM 5.

kfc garden salad serve

This is what KFC’s Garden Salad looks like. It’s served in a plastic
receptacle and the vegetables are cold. There are also two packets of
Thousand Island dressing and the salad is served with a plastic fork.

kfc garden salad view

We have lettuce leaves lining the bottom, a bedding of shredded
carrots, corn kernels scattered throughout the salad, cucumber sticks
lining the tray and sliced tomatos on top.

kfc garden salad w chicken

The popcorn chicken is served separately and I scattered it on the salad.

kfc garden salad w dressing

The Thousand Island dressing is then drizzled liberally…

kfc garden salad final

…and the KFC Garden Salad with Popcorn Chicken was half heartedly
tossed. You can’t get much tossing done with a plastic fork, I can tell
you that.

Nevertheless, I found it delicious – all the vegetables tastes
fresh, cold and crunchy and the crispness of the lettuce tasted
wonderful with the hot popcorn chicken. I wonder what the regional
variations are – I know the ones in KL have red capsicum, which we
don’t.

KFC Satay Burger

kfc satay burger

KFC Satay Burger is a newly launched product – the latest burger
from the KFC fast food franchise, targeted at local market tastes. I
like the satay fan image behind the logo, it represents the fan satay
sellers use to manually fan the hot charcoal in the past, but they use
auto fans for that nowadays…it’s a trip down nostalgia lane.

satay burger combo cup

I couldn’t resist reviewing something like this of course, so I went
for the KFC Satay burger combo meal. It comes with a free KFC tumbler
and I had the red one. The KFC Satay combo meal comprises of:

1 KFC Satay Burger
1 Potato Wedges (4pcs)
1 Carbonated drink (R)
1 Cool Cup
(available in 4 cool colors)

Hey, don’t look at me like that. I wasn’t the one who wrote it. πŸ˜‰

satay burger combo

This is what the KFC Satay Combo Meal looks like. I should explain
what satay sauce is at this point – it’s a peanut based sauce, with
predominantly sweet flavors and is used to complement satay, which is
meat skewed on sticks. The satay burger from KFC only retains the satay
sauce and cucumbers as the topping.

kfc satay burger wrapper

The Satay Burger comes in its own wrapping; the easy cone shaped
wrapper that has become the de facto standard nowadays – eat without
getting your hands dirty! You can think of satay sauce as chunky peanut
butter with a less creamy texture and with a saltier aftertaste to it.
It tastes better than it sounds.

satay burger cone

Now, we come to the meat of the matter (excuse the pun). The Satay
burger is basically a Zinger with satay sauce and cucumbers on it.
Honestly, I heard the KFC supervisor on duty say that. πŸ™‚ The cucumber
slices are nice and crisp and I like how the satay sauce tastes like,
although it seems to confuse itself with sambal sometimes.

satay burger messy

It looks kinda messy, but it tastes great.

…and you get a free KFC water tumbler to boot. Mine is red. What’s yours? πŸ˜‰

Smoked Norwegian salmon sandwich and strawberry cheesecake

interior coffee bean kuching
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

strawberry cheesecake display
Ordering Strawberry Cheese Cake @ RM 7.50 per slice
A Coffee Bean original! Strawberries “berried” in luscious cheese cake on a crunchy shortcake base.

strawberry cheesecake

The strawberry cheese cake was nice, with the strawberry flavor
distinctively discernable through the cheese cake and a very thin base,
which is always good in a cheese cake. I like my cheese cake to be less
dense and have a creamier mouth-feel though.

norwegian salmon sandwich
Smoked Norwegian Salmon sandwich with a side of green salad @ RM 13.90

norwegian salmon closeup

There was nothing aesthetically wrong with this “gourmet sandwich”.
The salad greens were nicely and evenly coated with dressing and the
sandwich is flanked by warm bread which has a crunchy crust but yields
to softer pastry. There were egg, smoked salmon and onions, dressed
with herb sauce. I just want more smoked salmon.

McDonald’s Crispy Prawn Burger and Prawn Wrappers

mcd new wave menu

McDonald’s is having two new items on its New Wave Menu – Crispy Prawn Burger and Prawn Wrappers makes up the New Wave Prawn Menu.

mcd prawn burger

It sounds like the New Tastes Menu concept in McDonald’s, Australia.
I’ve had the fish items already so this time I went for the new prawn
offerings. They can be ordered separately or as part of a McValue Meal.

mcd prawn wrapper

The prawn wrappers are also available at the discounted price of RM
2.95 when ordered with each meal, though this comes in a 4 piece set
instead of the regular 6 piece set.

crispy prawn burger

This is the crispy prawn burger. It’s actually surprisingly good. I
was expecting a prawn patty inside a bun, and technically, that was
what it was, but it tasted better than I expected.

prawn burger

Here’s a close up of the McDonald’s Crispy Prawn Burger. It’s made
with real prawns, or at least, it tasted like prawns were used, you
never know with the advances in the food flavor industry nowadays. Note
the pieces of green inside the soft burger prawn patty – they actually
have veggies inside, a nice attention to detail.

The lettuce was fresh and crispy and I loved the bun it came in – very nice, recommended!

mcdonalds prawn wrappers

This is the prawn wrappers. It’s the regular 6 piece set and it comes with Thai Sweet Chilli Sauce.

6prawn wrappers

Here’s a look inside the box.

prawn wrapper dipping

I didn’t like the sauce though – it overwhelmed the prawn’s taste.

prawn wrapper closeup

Here’s the close-up of the McDonald’s Prawn Wrappers. Its individual
prawns dipped in batter and deep fried to perfection. The batter didn’t
overwhelm the prawns and the insides were warm but still moist while
the tail end of the prawn was crispy enough that you could eat it!
