The F&B places all started to jettison their food stock straight after the F1 final race in Sepang with βBuy 1 free 1β promos and 50% discounts. I wouldn’t pay RM 20 for a soggy sandwich but I was feeling particularly hungry and at RM 10, it didn’t sound so bad. It started to sound like airport food prices to me. π
Thus, I parked my ass at the nearest place and started to eat.
I got an egg sandwich, managed to two bites and started to poke at the radioactive looking mess that’s supposed to be coleslaw when I accidentally upended the entire disposable container and got the gooey stuff all over my jeans. The splatter was everywhere β on the floor, on my clothes and it nearly even hit the person beside me.
Anyway, I was wiping futilely at my jeans with the tiny piece of serviette they gave me, just moving around the mess instead of doing anything productive to it, when the girl sitting next to me (see photo below) rummaged in her bag and held out a packet of wet wipes.
I thought that was really nice of her. Most people would have ignored the scene and looked the other way but she was kind enough to notice and offer some wet wipes to me. It really made my day, even though I still had to go to the washroom to clean up most of the mess. Heh! Thanks anonymous girl! I’m sorry I didn’t get your name. π‘
I stuck to a safer-to-eat muffin after that. It was at bargain basement prices – a Coffee Bean bottled drink with 4 individually packaged muffins for just RM 5. π
I headed down to check out this legendary Chinese style nasi lemak establishment with Joyce during my last day in Miri. Joyce is a regular dining companion of ours during my fortnight over there. We usually have breakfast or lunch together and on the last day I realized something…I’ve never actually taken a photo with her! I thought I have coz we’ve been eating together almost every day but I don’t have a picture of her.
Thus, we went down to Nasi Lemak NagaLiar for their acclaimed…er, nasi lemak. I have no idea what the tagline is supposed to convey. However, the history behind this super packed establishment is rather interesting β almost a rags to riches success story.
Nasi Lemak Naga Liar only serves nasi lemak and it sells out really fast. I think we went there at around 1 pm and the nasi lemak special is gone β only the regular ones remain. π‘ I could see a lot of people ordering packets to go β it seems to serve mainly office workers but it wasn’t always so.
According to Joyce, the humble beginnings of NagaLiar Nasi Lemak started with a husband and wife team delivering nasi lemak to schools using a motorcycle (!!!). The proprietor used to go around the schools and sell the nasi lemak to students during recess. It became very popular but they didn’t open a brick and mortar shop until recently.
I ordered Nasi Lemak Regular (RM 4) β it’s a pretty basic Chinese style version of the dish. There’s sambal, peanuts, anchovies, cool cucumber slices, an egg, a piece of fried chicken and of course, the santan (coconut milk) infused rice.
The nasi lemak from Naga Liar comes with fried chicken by default but you can also order…
…a side of curry chicken drumstick (RM 3). I like the curry chicken, but it’s also cooked Chinese style β it’s not as rich and has a distinctive taste like the curry chicken you get from chap fan places. The fried chicken is pretty good though β it’s dipped into a flavorful savory batter and deep fried. Delicious!
Naga Liar’s nasi lemak is practically an institution for the people my age in Miri, who grew up eating this during high school. However, I didn’t find it to be particularly outstanding. It’s good, but falls short of greatness. I’m comparing it to Village Park nasi lemak in Damansara Uptown though so that might not be a fair gauge.
I’ll say that it’s good nasi lemak by Miri standards. More importantly, it was great to have lunch with Joyce before leaving Miri again. π
I attended a dinner hosted by Singapore Tourism Board a couple of days ago at Delucca, One Residency. The dinner was held to unveil the new YourSingapore.com site on the digital front with a blogger engagement program. It just so happens that Iβm one of the two bloggers going on an all expenses paid trip to Singapore! π
The restaurant was decked out with banners displaying the different facets of Singapore. Thatβs the lovely Kristine over there – in hindsight, it was a bad idea to stand next to her in my color clashing outfit. π I just got back to KL and most of my wardrobe is still at the laundry. Heh!
Fresh here was the one who pointed out that my shirt and jeans color combination makes her want to stab her own eyes out with a hot poker. Okay, she didnβt exactly say those words but that was the gist of it. Easy to say when you have a color matching outfit to the romance themed banner. :p
I love the themed banners in the restaurant displaying the different facets of Singapore. There was a bit of mingling around and then we all settled down for dinner.
Delucca is an Italian restaurant with a simple but superb starter of bread drizzled with olive oil and oregano.
I’m an avid traveller and I love to go for everything from long trips to Europe to short sojourns a few hours drive away from KL. It’s a passion that my family has imbued in me β we have a tradition of going on at least one family vacation a year.
I first visited Singapore when I was 7 years old. I can’t remember the details of it but I remember it as a very safe place. It still is – I was there 8 months ago, and I had no worries at all walking down the street at 3 am in the morning. I donβt believe thereβs any other city in the world where you can do that without fear of being mugged or worse.
Well, Singapore has changed a lot since then. Itβs a constantly changing city – thatβs part of the appeal – they manage to preserve their heritage while moving forward and modernizing the city. Itβs the perfect tourist destination. It was when I went on all those annual family trips and it still is. I just turned 30 and I’ll continue the family tradition with my own when the time comes. π
Back to the dinner, there was a lot of good food and wine. I particularly liked the Panzanella Gamberetto β it’s a Tuscan bread salad with poached fresh water prawns, cherry tomatoes, shallots, olives and balsamic dressing. The prawns were succulent!
It was a great start to the launch of the new website. Gerald, the Area Director of Singapore Tourism Board took the stage and went through YourSingapore.com β their new site which allows you to see country specific promotions, upcoming events and festivals and even an intuitive travel planner where you can organize your own itinerary.
They also have a Facebook page where you can see the latest offers and promotions. Itβs a great platform for interacting with the Singapore Tourism Board staff and other like minded travellers. There are discussions about everything Singapore and the Facebook page nicely complements the YourSingapore.com website by providing a sense of community.
I was filming the speech when I heard that I was one of the bloggers who will be going to Singapore based on the itinerary that I made earlier this week. w00t!
I’ll be going to see The Lion King musical at Marina Bay Sands! This is the first South-East Asian premiere and tickets were given out during the dinner along with shopping vouchers during a contest. I’ve seen the cast perform at West End when I went to London earlier this year and it’ll be great to see the Singapore production. I hear the cast is sourced from London too!
Another highlight would be Voyage de la Vie, the theatrical rock circus by Mark Fisher at Resorts World Sentosa. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this and I can’t wait to see it for myself.
I also put Universal Studios Singapore into my itinerary β it’s a place that I’ll love to visit. I’m a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica (it’s an intelligent science fiction series β kinda like Star Trek for mature audiences who can understand the nuances of politics) and there a new ride based on the show. It’s dubbed a βduelling roller coasterβ with two simultaneous rides going around and with near collisions mere centimeters apart! I’m excited already. Heh!
My itinerary is a mixture of culture, adventure, nature and pleasure so I named it such. You can view it here or plan your very own itinerary. It’s really user friendly and everything Singapore has to offer is categorized with excerpts so you can just drag and drop to plan your trip there.
I also added some island hopping action (did you know you can see dolphins in Singapore?), a bit of nightlife (you haven’t been to Singapore until you’ve sipped the original Singapore Sling in Long Bar at Raffles Hotel), and a pampering session at a spa.
The best thing about YourSingapore.com (besides the nifty itinerary planner, which caters for everything from travel to health care tourism) is the country specific deals. There is a lot of promotions going on and you can choose whatever floats your boat.
There’s one in particular that caught my eye β the Ultimate Fun at Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World Singapore package which starts from 1st April to 31st July 2011. You can choose to stay from a variety of hotels β including Hard Rock Hotel Singapore and 2 x 1 day adult passes into Universal Studios Singapore. You’ll also get Resorts World Sentosa Singapore gift vouchers worth S$25 and other offers. Choose from a 2D/1N or 3D/2N stay and the prices starts from just S$488 for two!
I think that’s a really great deal.
It was a great dinner and everyone went home with something even if they didnβt win the prizes in the contest. Thanks Singapore Tourism Board!
YourSingapore.com allows you to see Singapore YOUR WAY. You can create your own itinerary or choose one of their suggested itineraries and customize it. It’s one of the best official tourism websites I’ve ever seen. Hop on over and check it out for yourself.
Yes, I have hit the big 3-0! It happened on the 5th of April and I went up to Colmar Tropicale to celebrate the start of having to write my age with the numeral 3 in relative peace and quiet (as is appropriate for people in their 30s ;)).
Colmar Tropicale is a French medieval themed resort in Bukit Tinggi (also called Berjaya Hills) and I secured a 1 bedroom suite there for about RM 300. I woke up late but we managed to reach there at around 12 pm and checked in. It’s about 3,500 feet above sea level and can be cool when the air is blowing but it’s not as cold as the other highlands.
Anyway, after a bit of exploring β I’ll write about the resort in another post β it was time for dinner. My girlfriend bought me dinner at La Cigogne β the best fine dining French restaurant at Colmar Tropicale. The food was good but I don’t think it’s authentic β more fusion cuisine than French. I had some wine and we also got a slice of cake to await the stroke of midnight.
I celebrated my 30th birthday at the balcony of a French themed resort in the highlands. Heh! We were full from dinner and I had to eat the entire slice of baked cheesecake sourced from a (you, guessed it) French bakery in the resort. It was adorned with three large candles. -_-
My girlfriend sang a birthday song and asked me to search the drawers of the suite for my present.
I didn’t know she brought me a present! I realized later that when I switched rooms (preferred one with a balcony) she had to scramble to pack the presents back when I wasn’t looking. She had bought me a Braun Buffel wallet and handmade a birthday card with twists of tiny paper β it took her three whole weeks to do the latter.
Thanks dear! I love you Jeanie. <3
We got home later the next day and she cooked mee sua for me β longevity noodles is a traditional dish in Chinese birthdays. What isn’t so traditional was that it wasn’t served with chicken soup but stewed pork leg β my favorite. Heh!
I had a great 30th birthday. It was relaxing and to be honest, I still don’t feel a month over 25.
Lainey is not a beer drinker. She’s a liquor and wine kinda person. I have drinks with the bff regularly and the only thing even close to a fermented drink she’ll have is a Snakebite (Strongbow cider with beer β half and half).
I personally like my beer. I used to read Beer Connoisseur and I suspect it’s the magazine that made me a bit of an arrogant drinker. I started drinking bocks and ales right off the bat just to appear more sophisticated. Heh!
…but you know, it really grows on you. I started to appreciate the taste and complex flavors that goes into a fine ale.
Anyway, whenever I go out drinking with Lainey she’ll be drinking something other than beer. It was decided that last Friday’s watering hole would be Jarrod & Rawlins in Damansara Heights. She works in that area and I live in Damansara Heights but I don’t think we’ve ever been here together.
We usually go to watering holes in MidValley or TTDI so we headed somewhere different this time. I love Jarrod & Rawlins coz it’s a nice and chill place (and it’s very close to where I live β I could even walk home if I was so inclined). I also like the food there and their toilets are awesome.
Yes, their toilets. I know a lot of places have air conditioned toilets but where else have you seen a self contained unit inside the toilet? Not many places right?
It’s awesome. You can take a dump in peace in a place like this. Comfort max.
It sounds a bit wrong to segue back into food after that bit about water closets but I’ll do it anyway. π I’ve already eaten so we shared a plate of stew and mash. It was then that I noticed they have a lot of tent cards on the tables promoting Newcastle Brown Ale for RM 19.
I have fond memories of my two recent trips to England so I ordered one to try. I ended up drinking 3 bottles. Heh! It is really good. It has been around since 1927 β an unconventional ale brewed by Colonel Jim Porter in (you guessed it) Newcastle, England. He was looking to make a unique ale that’s full flavored yet easy to drink.
An ale is a man’s drink, I’ll like to think. I had a lot of ale when I went to England. They really take pride in their beer over there. It’s a lot harder for new and young drinkers to palate since they tend to gravitate towards the lighter lagers. However, Newcastle Brown Ale bucks the trend by being smooth and easy to drink.
Predictably, Lainey won’t drink the Newcastle Brown Ale. I insisted she try it β I told her to forget all the preconceived notions of beer she has and just sip it like a βblind taste testβ. She did it for me, although I could tell she didn’t want to. If you know her, you’ll know she doesn’t drink beer.
I was half expecting her to spit it out or even grimace but surprisingly she had some good things to say about it.
Lainey’s take on it: βIt’s a lot smoother than beer, goes down a lot better and it doesn’t have a weird aftertaste.β
Now, if you know Lainey that is VERY HIGH PRAISE indeed since she doesn’t even like light lager…and Newcastle Brown Ale is (obviously) an ale.
Beer is serious business to the British. The Newcastle Brown Ale available here comes in bottles, and contrary to popular belief, you can bottle an ale and have it taste like draft beer too. There’s this ale called Kings Table Real Ale that’s only available in the Tower of London. It tastes just as good and fresh as the ales in local pubs.
I like the fact that Newcastle Brown Ale doesn’t have carbonation β it’s an authentic ale. The ales and beers in England doesn’t have carbonation too β it’s pulled from a pump like device β at least the local brews are.
It tastes real smooth and it reminds me a lot of England…sitting down with a pint and just relaxing. Newcastle Brown Ale will appeal to both new drinkers and the more sophisticated beer lovers β it’s easy drinkability will appeal to the younger crowd while the full body and flavor will find affinity with ale purists.
Newcastle Brown Ale comes in a 330 ml bottle with an accompanying glass and pours well with a golden honey color topped with a puffy white head. It’s 4.7% which is lower than what regular drinks over here weighs in at but about the same as British standard drinks.
I found it slightly sweet and I love the caramel aftertaste too. Just drinking one allows me to revisit the nice memories of going into a local pub in England and drinking a pint of ale…while in KL.
Try pairing Newcastle Brown Ale with cheeses, olives and deli meats like salami β all available at Jarrod & Rawlins. This ale also complements dishes like smoked salmon.
It truly deserves the title of The One and Only. I just wish it comes in a larger pint sized bottle coz I’m used to drinking pints instead of half pints. π
I posted this question on Facebook a while back and I’ve been reading the unusual last meal requests of death row inmates in Wikipedia. It’s quite interesting, really. What would you have for your last meal?
Personally, I’ll like:
Chicken rice
It’s my favorite dish. I used to eat it for lunch everyday!
Foie gras
I love this stuff. It goes well with some bread. I’ll love some caviar to go with it too!
In addition to that, I’ll have some comfort food (pork leg, chai bo, century eggs) and a huge Kobe steak β medium rare. π
What would you like to eat for your last meal before you die?
I believe kung fu experts call this the Tiger Claw stance.
It doesn’t do much in the way of getting your scalp clean. It’s just that I’ve tutored under a false master (namely, me) and no one ever bothered to tell me that it’s the wrong way to shampoo your hair. You’re basically using your fingernails to quickly rake through your hair, making as much foam as possible before moving on.
I am now using the correct method β employing only the very tips of my fingers (kinda like playing a guitar) to methodically cover the entire scalp.
I think the switch from using soap to proper shampoo on my hair did a world of good too. π
It’s strange how quickly one can break a bad habit and adopt new methods.
It is done.
I have gone through all 10 sessions, showing up every Tuesday and Thursday at Svenson for hair loss prevention treatments.
I have used their shampoo and conditioner twice a day with correct washing techniques.
It’s now time to evaluate how the Svenson treatments go.
You might remember this photo from the first time I went to Svenson to get my scalp checked.
This is what I look like now. I’m told it’s the real color of my scalp β pink. I’ve finally gotten through the gunk from years of abuse and the pores have started to open up again.
The best part is that I can wear black clothing without having to consciously brush away annoying dandruff from my shoulders (and completely missing my back) every hour or so. Heh! My dandruff is gone and my oily scalp is under control. It only takes one brushing hand through my hair to realize that β it no longer comes off greasy and smelling of a weird odor but clean, as it should be.
I’ll be completely honest, I sometimes forget to shampoo and I STILL have a clean scalp when the magnifier is used. I’m sometimes half tempted to apologize first before going under the magnifier but I decided to let it go and see what it shows. It’s quite amazing, the Svenson treatments is pretty forgiving of lapses like this β the disciplined treatment schedule ensures that my scalp remains clean. π
It really works. Despite my initial skepticism over such treatments, I kept going for the treatment sessions and I come to proclaim that Svenson delivers on its promises. Naturally, the dead zones (where my pores have closed completely) is still hairless, but the bits they could save is regenerating healthy hair β not the thin, sickly hair of before but strong, thick strands of hair follicle.
I would seriously recommend it to people who are balding or exhibiting the signs of balding β itchy scalp, oily scalp, dandruff and the sort. I’m a happy customer and Svenson has outlets throughout Malaysia so you might want to seek help or at least an initial assessment if you’re having the same problems.
I also noticed a banner at their MidValley outlet one day and asked about it. It is of interest to me since I have genetic male pattern baldness too β both my grandparents (maternal and paternal), uncles and father started balding early. Svenson launched their new DNA Genetic Hair Loss Test recently and you can still get the introductory price of RM 120 if you’re curious as to whether you have a predisposition towards baldness.
You know the old adage. Prevention is better than cure. This is very true when it comes to hair coz as I said, the part where the hair follicles have completely closed up cannot be salvaged. Svenson can do wonders even if you have genetic factors towards baldness so perhaps you’ll want to drop by one of their outlets to take it.
…and there’s always the chance to win a hair treatment package if you’re too attached to your wallet to part with any of the notes. π You can get a FREE hair assessment just by participating so there’s a good reason to participate in the Save My Hair contest.
Trust me, you won’t regret it. I’m would like to thank Chiou Mei and all of the Svenson MidValley team (Mary, Mun, Connie, Michelle, May and the rest β sorry if I left anyone out) for the great service and for putting up with me. It’s a really nice place where you can read the latest magazines while chilling out and getting your hair treatments and you never feel pressured to leave after that.
They’ll even help you style your hair if you want too β a very convenient offer that I took advantage of when I schedule my appointments before an event. Truly, service with a smile (and more). π
You can read my initial contact here and join the Save My Hair contest where every participant will win at least one hair assessment here.
I’m writing this before I board the plane back to KL. I’m hauling back several boxes of my girlfriend’s belongings with me. She’s coming over in a couple of days to work in KL and she’ll be living with me.
I’ll be honest here. I’m feeling more than a little trepidation at the idea. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. There is a grand total of three (3) serious relationships I’ve been in where the other half moves in with me. The first one happened when I was just in my teenage years β it also happened to be my first real relationship.
Her name was Wendy and it lasted all of six months.
It was all fine and dandy until we moved in together. The relationship lasted longer than that, of course β prior to that, we were practically inseparable. I don’t know why seeing each other day in and day out became so taxing on the relationship.
Familiarity breeds contempt?
It always starts with the little things β small issues that becomes the flash point of every argument. The same old problems brought up again and again. It’s something akin to cabin fever…I’ll even go so far to say it’s like prison, being cooped up in a small place with the same bunch of people 24/7.
It never ends well.
The second relationship (Louisa β the very same person that still resides as a tattoo on my left forearm) also went that way. We were together for YEARS. I graduated from Australia, came back to KL and moved in with her.
BAM! The relationship went downhill almost immediately.
However, we tried to work things out as adults β giving each other space, making concessions and compromises but in the end it still didn’t work out. We made a last ditch attempt to save the relationship by me moving to Kuching (it was just as well that I got a really good job offer there) and it was all good for a while…and then we broke up.
The third and last serious relationship where my girlfriend moved in was when I came to KL again. I came with Doris in tow and maybe it’s the nostalgic rose tinted glasses but I felt that I could have done things better and maybe it could have worked out if I had not turned into a complete asshole.
I’ll admit that much. I was a total asshole to her. I was an ungrateful son of a bitch who didn’t care about someone that loved me that much. I loved her too but I got too caught up with myself to realize that I’ve been taking her for granted. She’s a very nice girl and perhaps things would have been different if I had been the person I am now.
…or perhaps not.
The thing is, I’ve learned a lot from all these experiences. It made me take a good, hard look at myself and I didn’t like what I was seeing. I have been making amends since then.
I’m no saint, I’m not saying that I became the poster boy for abstinence after that. Hell, no.
…but I never did get into another serious relationship after Doris until now.
It’s funny isn’t it? When you’re single, all you want to do is get in a relationship. When you’re actually in one, the idea of being alone and free to do anything you want sounds pretty appealing.
The grass is always greener on the other side and all that.
However, I really want to make this work. I don’t think I’ll make the same mistakes again and I’ll try very hard to keep the relationship alive. I know my own weaknesses and I hope I am more patient and understanding now. I’ll give it my all.
There is an old man that sets up his humble grill in the afternoons at a coffee shop called Chatterbox Dessert and Cafe. It doesn’t even have a name. I first thought he was a customer, since he was just sitting at a table chilling there with a cold beer. Joanna ordered some chicken wings and the person told us it’s going to take 30 minutes.
I finally met up with Joanna just now for a very late lunch. It turns out that she lives just one street across from where I’m staying in Miri. We’re practically neighbours and never realized it. Heh! She brought me to this legendary place which is supposed to have excellent chicken wings.
I hear he only prepares 200 chicken wings every day. He doesn’t do more even though the demand is there. I’ve only seen ONE (1) customer in addition to us who managed to order his acclaimed chicken wings. The next one that came along was turned away coz he told them that he’s out of chicken wings.
Now, this is quite puzzling since we’ve only been there an hour and to the best of my knowledge, only two people ordered the chicken wings. It turns out that the rest were βreservedβ – it has been pre-booked by another customer so he’s not even selling a single chicken wing to anyone else.
This is one of the rare instances where a stall successfully manipulates the supply and demand of his wares well. I think manipulate might be the wrong word to use here since the man doesn’t seem to be interested in mass producing inferior quality BBQ chicken wings. He displays passion β watching over the BBQ grill with a determined and almost ferocious intensity.
He’s a man that won’t be rushed too. He refuses to serve the chicken wings until it’s properly done according to his standards. Joanna went over after a while and said it’s okay, we’ll just take it as it is. However, the man politely declined with a smile and said it’s not done yet. It looks done and it smells done but he won’t serve it until HE DECREES THAT IT’S DONE.
You just gotta admire that. Heh!
The chicken wings costs RM 2 each. Joanna paid so I can’t be sure but 5 chicken wings at RM 10 comes up to RM 2 each, unless my math is way off the mark.
We also had chicken rice while waiting for the BBQ chicken wings to be done. I remember the last time I met up with Joanna in Sibu during Chinese New Year, we had chicken rice too. Or at least, I had chicken rice…she didn’t eat.
Back to the BBQ chicken wings, it’s every bit as good as I expected. It goes very well with the chilli sauce that came with it but I suggest you eat it au natural. It’s juicy and tender and the marinade he uses is sweet, producing a set of chicken wings that transcends into sublime culinary bliss. π
It was a lazy Friday night and we got a call from Wendy asking us if we would like to join her for dinner. She’s buying and we headed down to BARcelona for food and drinks. BARcelona is a place that serves Spanish food and the best thing about the place is that you can order stuff from SOHO (which is next door) too!
BARcelona and SOHO are located in adjacent lots and belongs to the same owner β you can sit at either one and order food from the other. SOHO specializes in Irish food and I’m pretty sure both establishments share the same bar.
There’s an outdoor patio type canopy that allows you to chill al fresco style. It’s Miri so there’s always a nice sea breeze going on at night. π
I am intrigued by BARcelona’s concept β they have different seating arrangements to suit everyone. You can have a private dining area or sit in one of the side booths where there’s a computer screen on the table. I saw a lot of people logging on to Facebook and showing their friends photos.
I the idea. π It brings social media back to the real world.
Anyway, the photos I took are really horrible coz I didn’t bring my dSLR here so I’ll use a thousand words instead. Heh!
Jeanie had the broccoli soup from SOHO. I like it β it’s very creamy and rich. I’m not a big fan of soups in general so that’s saying a lot.
The other thing that surprised my friends was the large Cobb Salad (RM 15) which we ordered for starters. This also came from SOHO and contains organic mixed greens, honey roasted chicken, tomatoes, onions, bacon with blue cheese crumbles and hard boiled eggs. I don’t eat a lot of veggies but the salad uses a balsamic vinegar dressing which hits the spot and the bits of bacon inside helped a lot too. I ate quite a bit of the leafy greens β enough to hit my usual monthly quota.
The chef also recommended several tapas dishes that we had. The most memorable one is Albondigas Picante (which will hereby be referred to as the meatball tapas). This is quite surprising since it looks rather plain at first glance. However, when the Taste Test (TM) is applied, it turned me into a believer. The meatball is firm but literally bursts with juicy goodness when you bite down into it. Nice!
There’s also the Patatas con Alioli Picante which all the others liked but I didn’t care much for. It does have very nice dressing but eating potatoes just doesn’t do it for me. To each his/her own!
The Baranjas con Salsa de Pimentas (eggplant with Spanish sauce) was good though. I love eggplant. It’s one of the few vegetables I like, mostly due to it’s creamy and rich texture. The tapas dishes all come with slices of bread to soak up the gravy.
I love the Paella Marisco (seafood paella) too β it came with huge prawns, mussels and squid. You can request for them to use the more authentic Spanish rice instead of the regular rice tailored to local tastes β it tastes much better this way.
The rice is firm and each grain is distinctive. It’s flavorful and goes very well with the seafood. Trust me on this – ask for Spanish rice. π
Next came another one of their specialties β the Valencia Pizza (RM 19). It’s 10 inches, made with a topping of onion, chilli, pepper, bacon and minced beef and comes in a proper thin crust. I had my doubts initially upon setting my eyes on it. Chilli slices on a pizza? It looks like the product of an overzealous fusion chef but when I bit into the thin crust and tasted the pizza, I fell in love with it immediately. I eat a lot of pizza and I usually forgo it when I’m eating out but this one tastes exquisite!
It’s one of those rare moments when fusion cuisine works very well. I can see why it’s on the recommended list in the menu. I would recommend it too. π
Down to the cocktails, I had three β this is the Ultimate Margarita (RM 20). It’s done well and I love the sea salt lining the rim of the glass. It’s a small thing but you’ll be surprised at the number of places that don’t do it, especially in smaller cities. It’s not a proper margarita unless there’s sea salt on the rim. I like the attention to detail in BARcelona.
I also had their signature BARcelona Tea Party (RM 25). It’s listed on the alcohol menu as βStar & Strong Alcoholβ. It’s true, the alcohol content is rather high in this long island tea variant. I love it! π
The best dish that we had that night was hands down the humble chicken wings. It’s oven baked and marinated with juices which complement the chicken very well. The skin is crispy but the meat tender β a wonderful experience. Do not miss this one if you’re ever in BARcelona. It’s perfect as finger food or a main course. Succulent.
BARcelona and SOHO is located diagonally from Mega Hotel in Miri. It’s outside of the main clubbing distinct and as such, provides a nice change of scenery. The bill is affordable too β the tapas ranges from RM 5 β RM 10 and the mains are reasonably priced. It’s a great place to have dinner or drinks with a couple of friends.
Thanks for picking up the bill Siaw Yin! You’re too kind. Next meal is on me. π
