May

may

This is May, a friend I met in Miri and got acquainted with while out clubbing three (3) nights in a row. I didn’t actually remember seeing her the first night but she saw me and was surprised to see me the second night and didn’t actually recognize me at first. I was…er, under the influence of a certain NMDA antagonist and had to be helped out of Balcony the first night and the second time I saw her was when I was completely sober during dinner and she was kind enough to pay me the compliment that I was a lot more good looking than her initial impression. πŸ˜‰

may me

May looks really hot in person but she’s unfortunately spoken for and unavailable. Hmm…I seem to know a lot of “Calender Girls” – I know two (2) Aprils, five (5) Mays, and a June. It was fun hanging out with her for three nights in a row in Miri.

Superhero Movie

superhero movie

Superhero Movie was one of the worst movies I saw in recent memory. I caught it in one of the theaters in a shopping mall in Miri since we didn’t have anything to do until dinner. Superhero Movie is from the same producers of Scary Movie, Epic Movie etc and is a parody of the genre.

superhero movie pirate

The primary influence is from Spiderman but I also caught references from the Fantastic Four, Superman, X-Men, The Fly (which is not a superhero movie per se but a darker sci fi flick), and Batman Begins. It’s got a lot of laughs out of the audience but it’s relies a lot on cheesy slapstick humor which I guess I’m a little too high brow to appreciate. πŸ˜‰

superhero movie tix

Oh well, at least it’ll only waste about 60 minutes of your time. That’s how short the movie is – about an hour of footage before the credits roll.

Kokoberry Crepes

kokoberry crepes

Mary texted me the previous night to inform me that the Kokoberry Crepes are now available. I told her I’ll be there right after work the next day so I arrived at about 6 pm at Kokoberry, Delta Mall yesterday evening to check out the crepes. I ordered a Hazelnut Chocolate Crepe (RM 2.80) and a Peanut Butter Crepe (RM 2.80).

kokoberry crepes me

I was initially unrecognized due to my office attire – it seems that I look different wearing work clothes than I do in casual wear. I’ve been told this much by a lot of people. I think it’s a combination of the way I style my hair during work (very conservative) and the long sleeved shirts that I wear (hides my tattoos).

Blue Sky (RM 3.20 / RM 2.80)

kokoberry blue sky

Blue Sky is another one of the Top 9 concoctions of Kokoberry. It’s a bit like a float – it contains Sprite (or 7-Up) topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I honestly don’t know where the blue color comes from. It’s a refreshing drink though, due to the Sprite/7-Up base – perfect for a non-alcoholic thirst quencher after work.

The Making of a Kokoberry Crepe

kokoberry crepe 1

The batter is prepared (it takes about 15 minutes) and poured on a flat heating element.

kokoberry crepe 2

Peanut butter is then slathered evenly on the cooking crepe.

kokoberry crepe 3

Hazelnut chocolate crepes goes through the same process (but with hazelnut filling, of course).

kokoberry crepe 4

This is a close up of the cooking crepe. Kokoberry’s crepes are thin and crispy, with a chewy end – it tastes surprisingly good.

kokoberry crepe 5

The finished crepe is then lifted from the heating element and folded up. I got her to pose for a photograph so many times that I think her cheeks are sore from having to maintain a constant smile. πŸ˜‰

kokoberry mary crepe

This is what the finished Kokoberry Crepe looks like. The model is none other than Mary, the owner of the outlet.

kokoberry crepe fan

Hmm…it doubles as a fan too! Cool.
(Pun intended)

kokoberry crepe us

The crepes and drinks were on the house again, thanks to Mary. You shouldn’t keep doing this Mary, paiseh lah, next time I insist on paying or else I won’t go. :p

Ipoh Town Kopitiam

ipoh town kopitiam

Ipoh Town Kopitiam is a hugely successful franchise that takes the old skool kopitiam (coffee shop) concept and markets it to the new generation. Gone are the rickety stools and chipped marble tables, replaced with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. I went to the beach during my last day in Miri and we dropped by the Ipoh Town Kopitiam to get a hot cup of coffee before heading back home.

ipoh white coffee

Ipoh Town Kopitiam is plastered with informative wall length displays on the origins of the franchise and introduces Ipoh White Coffee. Ipoh White Coffee is associated with Ipoh and is a mixture of “white” and “black” coffee blended in the traditional Malaysian method originating from Old Town Ipoh.

ipoh town kopitam interior

The franchise serves a wide range of traditional kopitiam food such as soft boiled eggs as well as a variety of tea and coffee. The ambiance of Ipoh Town Kopitiam is reminiscent of the golden old days of ye olde coffee shops, which has been popularized nowadays with other franchises like Cuppa Kopi Roti.

Ipoh Town “Cham” Coffee Tea Mix (RM 2.20)

ipoh town cham

I ordered the Ipoh Town Cham. Cham is the Hokkien word for “mix” and it’s a hot drink consisting of equal amounts of coffee and tea. It tastes pretty good actually and warmed me up after my swim at the beach in Miri (and later being rained on). I was also wearing a wet pair of swimwear under my clothes so I appreciated the heat from the drink.

Ipoh Town White Coffee (RM 2.20)

ipoh town white coffee

Faye had the iced version of the Ipoh Town White Coffee despite the heavy rain (which was what drove us from the beach in seek of shelter in the first place). She later denied ordering it and promptly appropriated my drink…despite the fact that my swimming trunks were still wet under my pants and I was literally freezing my balls off.

KJ’s house in Miri

kj house

I stayed at KJ’s house in the Pujut area in Miri during my trip there. He just bought it and had it renovated and invited us to stay for the duration of our vacation. In return, I drove his Hilux down from Sibu to Miri for him. I flew back though, I couldn’t imagine the horrors that would await me during a 6 hour drive after being hungover and er…recovering, so to speak, from the various substances that I accidentally ingested during the trip. πŸ˜‰

kj living room

It’s still not fully renovated yet, but the living room is pretty much done and most of the fittings are in place. I like the long reclining sofa that’s in front of the TV. And also persian rugs that will lend a beautiful elegance to home. You can find more varieties of area rugs with oriental flair.

kj gym

He installed an exercise machine (mini gym?) in one corner that I tried to utilize…for about two minutes before I gave up…

kj lounge

…and went back to lounging about on the couch.

kj us

Faye was staying there as well – we drove down together, with her taking the first leg of the journey to Tatau while I slept for an hour and me taking over the wheel after that, all the way to Miri.

kj bedroom

This is the bedroom I slept in. There are two queen beds to it can comfortably sleep four (4) people if you’re so inclined. It’s just right for two (2) people though.

kj hot tub

He even had a hot tub installed with jets of water in the master bedroom!

Thanks for the hospitality! It saved us from having to shack up in a hotel, which would have made the trip even more of a costly venture with the…er, misplacement of my digicam and cell phone. πŸ˜‰

Pete’s Deli

petes deli

Pete’s Deli is a small gourmet deli in Miri. I was looking for a place to eat at around 3:30 pm and most of the eating establishments were closed, so I called Kim up and asked her to recommend a place that’s still open at this hour. She told me to try Pete’s Deli, so off we went to check the place out. Pete’s Deli has been around since 1992 – or so the signboard claims. That’s more than a decade of deli goodness!

petes deli interior

The interior of Pete’s Deli is decorated in retro 60’s style with B&W posters of The Beatles and Elvis Presley (has left the building) dominating the wall facade. The place is small enough to be cozy and there are seating arrangements to accommodate about 30 people if you really don’t mind having no elbow room. πŸ˜‰

petes deli counter

Pete’s Deli is self-service and orders are taken at the counter. The person manning the counter is none other than Pete’s son. He asked me if I am a blogger, which took me by surprise, before I remembered that the blogging profession (?) has mushroomed and most people who take photographs of everything is probably a blogger. πŸ˜‰

Peach Lassi (RM 5)

petes peach lassi

This was recommended by Pete’s son. The lassi is made with their famous home made yogurt. It tasted good but there is one major problem with the presentation – with a place like Pete’s Deli, you’ll be expecting proper glassware instead of a disposable Coke paper cup. It’s just not right. I noticed that the other patrons were also served with paper cups, this is a major turn off for a deli of this standard.

petes toasted sandwich

The Original Pete’s Deli Toasted Sandwiches (RM 7)

petes sandwich

The Original Pete’s Deli Toasted Sandwiches comes with fillings of tuna & mayonnaise, roast chicken, corned beef, cheese or a mix of two fillings of your choice. I went for the roast chicken and cheese toasted sandwich. It was alright – the fillings were recommended by the proprietor, my original choice was for tuna and corned beef but he said it wouldn’t taste right.

petes oxtail stew

Oxtail Stew (RM 24)
Oxtail slow cooked till fork tender.

petes oxtail

This is the oxtail stew which is one of their more popular dishes from the dinner menu. Pete’s son was kind enough to cook this for us despite that fact that the dinner menu doesn’t officially start until 6:30 pm. It can be ordered with rice or mashed potatoes. KJ went with the rice. The oxtail stew is great, and there’s no false advertising here – the meat really is fork tender. πŸ™‚

petes lamb shank

Lamb Shank (RM 34)
Lamb shank braised in mouthwatering gravy.

petes lamb

This is Faye’s order and is one of Pete’s Deli’s signature dishes. The lamb shank is huge and comes with an option of rice or mashed potatoes. Faye went for the mashed potatoes.

petes lamb meat

The lamb shank comes off easily from the bone and the meat is tender and flavorful. This comes highly recommended from me.

Pete’s Deli Cookie (RM 4)

petes deli cookie

This is not on the menu but was again recommended to me since it just came out of the oven. RM 4 for a cookie is a little on the steep side, despite the sprinkled powdered sugar presentation. It tasted good though, as all oven fresh cookies do. πŸ™‚

petes deli us

Pete’s Deli would be your friendly, neighborhood deli that serves delicious lamb shanks and oxtail stew. Now, if only they would do away with the disposable paper cups…

Jakar Big Prawn Noodles

jakar

I have been told by Will that there’s a famous place serving Big Prawn Mee at Jakar so I made a road trip down there with Katherine during the weekend. Jakar is a small town about an hour’s drive away from Sibu. Jakar is apparently famous for their Sarawak pepper cultivation, as can be seen by their official mascot (?). It doesn’t really help that Jakar sounds exactly like the Malay word for penis with their phallic looking emblem.

peking restaurant

Peking Restaurant in Jakar is the place to go for the Jakar Big Prawn Noodles. Jakar is located to your right as you drive into the Kuching highway and Peking Restaurant is near the pepper tree ornament. I took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get there due to a couple of wrong turns but only 59 minutes to get back – and that was maintaining a constant 120 km/h with a lowest speed of 80 km/h and reaching a highest speed of 150 km/h.

jakar big prawn noodles

Katherine and I both ordered the Jakar Big Prawn Mee (RM 15). The waitress asked us if we wanted the “special” Jakar Big Prawn Noodles (which contains the large “antlers” of the prawn) and we replied in the affirmative. This is her bowl of the noodles.

jakar big prawn mee

This is my bowl of the Jakar Big Prawn Mee. There is no difference between the two – we both ordered the same thing, it’s just here for…er, illustrative purposes. πŸ˜‰

jakar big prawn

The Jakar Big Prawn Noodles contains one (1) big prawn cut diagonally with the head and the “antlers” (would someone be kind enough to tell me what this is actually called?) included. The noodles are cooked Foochow style with the soup infused with the tasty prawn essence. It tastes delicious! I would rate this as better than Min Kong Big Prawn Noodles but the 1 hour drive there would make this a costlier dish due to the recent petrol price hike.

jakar splash damage

I heeded Will’s advice and wore a T-shirt in a dark shade due to the splash damage I incurred during my previous expedition for the Sarikei Big Prawn Asam Tom Yam Noodles. Unfortunately, some splash damage did occur again, but Katherine claims it’s inevitable with dishes like these. Oh well…

jakar us

Nevertheless, it was a nice road trip to check out the famous Jakar Big Prawn Noodles. It’s a long weekend since Saturday is a gazetted public holiday so there’s time to drive around and do some Rural Adventuring (TM).

jakar me

…and I just couldn’t resist touching Jakar. πŸ˜‰

Kokoberry in Delta Mall

kokoberry

Kokoberry is a franchise specializing in bubble tea and other drinks. It’s a franchise that I saw in Miri and it’s now available in Sibu, operated by none other than fellow blogger Mary Ting in Delta Mall.

kokoberry menu

Kokoberry has a very impressive menu of drinks ranging from bubble tea to coffee. It focuses on milk based drinks and also has a range of crepes which were unfortunately out of stock this morning.

kokoberry counter

Mary (better known as goolooloo in the blogsphere) recommended the drinks from the Top 9 menu, which is the nine most popular drinks by Kokoberry. She was kind enough to allow me to tour behind the counter to take photos of Kokoberry.

blueberry yogurt shake

This is the Blueberry Yogurt Shake (RM 4.20 / RM 3.80). It’s one of the premium drinks from the Top 9 menu that contains real fruit pieces. It tastes great and I bet it’ll do wonders for your bowel movements too. πŸ˜‰

ice blended cappuccino

This is the Ice Blended Cappuccino (RM 4.30 / RM 3.90) which would make a great start to your day. I made an appointment with Mary at 10:30 am but I…er, kinda woke up late and only got there at 11:15 pm. The coffee gave my hungover neurons a kick start. πŸ™‚

ice cream rainbow

This is the Ice Cream Rainbow (RM 2.90 / RM 2.60) which is made with strawberry ice cream. Mary warned me that this is a very sweet drink and I have to agree, despite having a bit of a sweet tooth. Sugar rush! It contains bits of jelly and the squiggly green things in chendol, which adds to the texture of the drink.

kokoberry duo

I also found out that drinking from two different drinks at the same time does wonders to the texture and taste, much like the famous Ratatouille scene. πŸ˜‰ Shotgun bubble tea!

kokoberry me mary

This is Mary, who is the owner of Kokoberry. Kokoberry has a loyalty program that charges lower prices for members (hence the two prices listed above). She was kind enough to provide us the drinks for free. Thanks Mary!

Dragon Boat Festival – Duanwu Jie

dumpling work

The Dragon Boat Festival (more commonly known as Duan Wu Jie) is one of the traditional festive occasions for the Chinese. It falls on the 8th of June this year and our company’s social club took the liberty of distributing rice dumplings (called zhong zhi) to everyone in the office on Friday (since Saturday is a gazetted public holiday).

dumpling meat

There is one with meat filling (which may also contain chestnuts, peanuts or egg yolks in addition to the chicken)…

dumpling red bean

…and the other with red bean paste. These are the two popular fillings for rice dumplings. I’ve also seen pure peanut fillings but the meat (which can be pork or chicken, but never beef or lamb) and red bean paste fillings lead the pack in popularity.

dumpling faye

Faye’s grandmother also made some for her family and she insisted I consumed one right in front of her in the car just now. I like the meat dumplings (preferably with chestnuts, mushrooms and egg yolks – ate a huge one the other day given by another friend) but I don’t really enjoy eating red bean paste. I don’t even like the stuff in my cendol or ice kacang.

Happy Duanwu Jie to all the readers of sixthseal.com!

Rest & Relax (RR)

rr

Rest & Relax is better known as RR and is located above 3 Degrees Celsius (the club). It’s managed by the same proprietors and the place does not have any of the popular neon signboards other clubs and pubs display.

rr bar

There is an RR signage on the top which is not lit and there’s no indication of the 3C club downstairs except for the massive throng of teenagers hanging around the place and the bass emanating from the vicinity.

rr live band

RR (as it is commonly known) also has a live band and is a chill out place with bar seating areas as well as other more private seating arrangements compared to the all out bass music of the 3C club downstairs.

rr noodles

We’ve just watched Kung Fu Panda and haven’t had anything to eat yet so we ordered a plate of fried noodles (RM 6). It’s a pretty large serving…

rr share

…so I shared it with Faye.

rr lamb

We also had their lamb cube (RM 15) which is one of the more popular finger foods. It’s pieces of grilled lamb served with chilli sauce.

high high

I also remembered having several jugs (pitchers) of High High – it’s a local cocktail concoction which consists of Guinness Stout, Heineken beer, wine cooler and vodka. It tastes surprisingly good and is very popular at pubs and bars here and usually goes for RM 48 – 50.

rr susie ting

This is the delectable Susie Ting, which is unfortunately taken. πŸ˜‰

rr group

This is a group photo of us at RR – that’s me and Faye standing and Susie and Annie seated.

rr group pat

The head pat heard around the world referenced in the next paragraph.

rr faye me

I remember taking a group photo where I patted Susie’s head and Faye insisted I pose in a similar manner…this time with HER patting my head. Pfffffttt…
